INS Trishul Joins 24th India-France Exercise Varuna at Toulon
Indian naval ship Trishul is taking part in the 24th edition of Exercise Varuna, the yearly India-France naval drill, after reaching Toulon in France.

Why in News
The Ministry of Defence said on 1 October 2026 that INS Trishul has joined the 24th edition of Exercise Varuna, the India-France bilateral maritime exercise, after reaching Toulon in France on 22 September 2026.
INS Trishul, a warship of the Indian Navy, has joined the 24th edition of Exercise Varuna, the yearly bilateral maritime exercise held between the Indian Navy and the French Navy. The ship reached the French port of Toulon on 22 September 2026 and was welcomed with a ceremonial water cannon salute by the host navy.
What Exercise Varuna is
Varuna is the name given to the annual naval exercise that India and France hold together. Its twenty-fourth edition places it among the longest-running of India's bilateral drills at sea, and the two navies use it to work on handling each other's ships, aircraft and procedures without friction.
The harbour phase
The first part of the visit was spent in port, with professional discussions, sporting fixtures and cultural programmes. The Commanding Officer of the ship called on Rear Admiral Mackara Ouk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief for Operations of the French Mediterranean command known as CECMED, and met senior officers of the French Navy. Indian sailors went aboard the French ships Charles de Gaulle, Forbin and La Fayette, where they studied carrier operations, aviation arrangements and shipboard practice. A cultural evening on board was attended by retired Vice Admiral Laurent Isnard, the Deputy Mayor of Toulon, along with French officers and civilian guests, and a friendly volleyball match was played between the two crews.
Tribute at Marseille
The Commanding Officer, officers and crew laid a wreath at the Mazargues War Memorial in Marseille, in memory of the 205 Indian soldiers who laid down their lives in the World Wars. The memorial keeps alive a chapter of Indian military history far from home.
The sea phase
Out at sea the Indian ship worked alongside French units including the air defence destroyer Forbin, the frigate La Fayette and the nuclear-powered submarine Suffren, together with NH90 helicopters and Atlantique 2 maritime patrol aircraft. The drills covered anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface action and live firing, and helicopters landed across from one deck to the other. Such serials are the heart of the exercise because they test whether two navies can act as one force at short notice.

Practice Questions
Exercise Varuna is a bilateral maritime exercise between India and which country?
- A.United Kingdom
- B.France
- C.Russia
- D.Japan
Show answer
Correct answer: B. France
Explanation
The correct answer is France. Varuna is the annual bilateral maritime exercise between the Indian Navy and the French Navy, and in its twenty-fourth edition the Indian warship Trishul sailed to the French port of Toulon to take part. Option A is wrong because the naval exercise India holds with the United Kingdom goes by a different name. Option C is wrong as well; the drill India conducts with Russia is a separate series and has nothing to do with Varuna. Option D is incorrect because the exercise with Japan is also a distinct series with its own name. A useful way to fix this in memory is to link the French connection with the ports and units named in this edition, Toulon as the port of call and the French ships Charles de Gaulle, Forbin and La Fayette, along with the nuclear-powered submarine Suffren that took part in the sea phase.
Which edition of Exercise Varuna is INS Trishul taking part in?
- A.20th
- B.22nd
- C.24th
- D.26th
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 24th
Explanation
The correct answer is the 24th edition. The Ministry of Defence stated that INS Trishul arrived at Toulon to join the twenty-fourth edition of the exercise, which makes Varuna one of the longest-running bilateral naval exercises India takes part in. Options A and B, the 20th and 22nd editions, belong to earlier years of the same series and are the kind of near-miss figures a paper setter places to test whether the current edition has been noted carefully. Option D, the 26th, runs ahead of the present count and is therefore wrong. For the examination hall, the safest habit is to remember the edition number together with the year, so that the 24th edition is tied to 2026 and to the port of Toulon in France. Remember also that the ship arrived there on 22 September 2026 and was greeted with a ceremonial water cannon salute.
The crew of INS Trishul laid a wreath at the Mazargues War Memorial for how many Indian soldiers of the World Wars?
- A.105
- B.205
- C.305
- D.405
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 205
Explanation
The correct answer is 205. The Commanding Officer, officers and crew of the ship laid a wreath at the Mazargues War Memorial in Marseille in remembrance of 205 Indian soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice during the World Wars. Options A, C and D offer figures close enough to be plausible, and each is wrong; such near figures are a common trap in examinations where only one number has been reported. Two details help the answer stick. First, the memorial stands at Marseille, while the ship was berthed at Toulon, so the city of the memorial and the port of call are different places on the French Mediterranean coast. Second, the wreath-laying was part of the harbour phase of the exercise, which also included cross-deck visits, an exchange of operational experience, a cultural evening on board and a friendly volleyball match between the two crews.
