Why in News

The Union Ministry of Education extended the NMMSS application deadline for the academic year 2026-27 to 31 October 2026 on the National Scholarship Portal, with verification dates in November 2026.

The Union Ministry of Education has given students more time to apply for the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme (NMMSS). For the academic year 2026-27, applications will now be accepted till 31 October 2026 on the National Scholarship Portal.

The revised timeline

StageLast date
Submission of application31 October 2026
Verification by Institute Nodal Officer (L1)15 November 2026
Verification by District Nodal Officer (L2)30 November 2026

Students who have already applied must make sure the institute checks their form by the November date and the district authority by the end of November, or the application will not move forward.

How many have applied

The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) opened for this round on 1 June 2026. As on 30 September 2026, the portal had received 88,522 fresh applications and 1,97,133 renewal applications. Every applicant must finish the One-Time Registration (OTR) on the portal before filling the scholarship form.

What the scheme gives

  • Qualifying students get Rs 12,000 per annum, sent straight to their bank accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer
  • One lakh fresh scholarships are awarded every year to Class IX students who clear the selection test held by their own State or Union Territory government
  • The award continues from Class X to Class XII by renewal, provided the student meets the academic conditions laid down

Who can apply

The scheme is meant for bright students from economically weaker families, so that money does not stop them after Class VIII. Only those studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools are covered. A candidate must have scored at least 55 per cent marks or the same grade in Class VII, and students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes get a relaxation of five percentage points. The family income of the applicant must not be more than Rs 3.50 lakh a year.

Why it matters

NMMSS is one of the central government's main school-level scholarships, and the extension matters because verification happens in two layers before the money is released. By moving the application date, the ministry also leaves the nodal officers at institute and district level enough room to clear the forms within the schedule.

Practice Questions

Q1.Government SchemesEasy

How much does a student selected under the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme receive every year?

  1. A.Rs 6,000
  2. B.Rs 12,000
  3. C.Rs 24,000
  4. D.Rs 36,000
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Rs 12,000

Explanation

The correct answer is Rs 12,000. A student selected under the scheme receives that amount every year, and the money is credited straight into the student's own bank account through Direct Benefit Transfer, which removes middlemen from the payment chain. The benefit begins in Class IX and can run up to Class XII through renewal, subject to the academic conditions the scheme lays down. Options A, C and D name amounts that the scheme does not pay. They look believable because different central and state scholarships pay sums of this order, and a candidate who has only a vague memory of the figure may be tempted by them. The ministry's own statement on the extended deadline is clear on the point: eligible students studying in state government, government-aided and local body schools get Rs 12,000 per annum, so only option B is right.

Q2.Government SchemesMedium

Which class must a student be in to appear for the NMMSS selection examination and win a fresh scholarship?

  1. A.Class VII
  2. B.Class VIII
  3. C.Class IX
  4. D.Class XI
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Class IX

Explanation

The correct answer is Class IX. Fresh scholarships under the scheme go to Class IX students who qualify in the selection examination conducted by the respective State or Union Territory government, and one lakh such awards are made every year. Option A is wrong, though it is the trickiest choice, because Class VII is the class whose marks decide eligibility: a candidate must have at least fifty-five per cent or the equivalent grade in Class VII, with a relaxation of five percentage points for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students. Option B is wrong because Class VIII is the stage beyond which the scheme is meant to keep weaker-section students in school, not the class in which the award is given. Option D is wrong because by Class XI a scholar is continuing through renewal, not entering afresh.

Q3.Government SchemesMedium

What is the ceiling on parental income for a student applying under the NMMSS?

  1. A.Rs 1.50 lakh per annum
  2. B.Rs 2.50 lakh per annum
  3. C.Rs 3.50 lakh per annum
  4. D.Rs 8 lakh per annum
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Rs 3.50 lakh per annum

Explanation

The correct answer is Rs 3.50 lakh per annum. The scheme is built for meritorious children of economically weaker households, so an income test applies along with the marks test, and the parental income of an applicant must not cross that figure. Options A and B name lower ceilings; they are plausible because several welfare schemes use limits of that size, but neither is the limit set for this scholarship. Option D names a far higher ceiling of the kind used for some reservation and fee-waiver categories, which makes it attractive to a candidate who mixes up schemes, yet it is well above what this scheme allows. Along with the income condition, the applicant needs at least fifty-five per cent in Class VII, relaxed by five percentage points for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe students, and must study in a state government, government-aided or local body school.
