Why in News

On 6 October 2026 Defence Minister Rajnath Singh witnessed the delivery of the 2,000th aero-engine by HAL Koraput and announced a second Shakti engine production line with an investment of Rs 218 crore.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh was present on 6 October 2026 as the Koraput Division of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) handed over its 2,000th aero-engine, and used the occasion to announce a second production line for Shakti engines. He called the milestone a marker in India's aerospace journey and pressed for stronger home-grown ability in designing, developing, testing, building and maintaining advanced aero-engines, saying command over propulsion is central to self-reliance in defence.

Six decades at Koraput

The Division was set up in 1964, so the 2,000 engines represent six decades of work. Its engines have powered frontline fighters including the MiG-21, MiG-27, MiG-29 and the Su-30MKI. Alongside new production, the unit has overhauled more than 9,000 engines, and the Minister noted that indigenisation of components together with a shorter turnaround is lifting the readiness and service life of critical assets. Production gives fresh capability, he said, while overhaul stretches the life of what is already in service.

Capacity and investment

Annual capacity for the AL-31FP engine is being raised from 30 to 50 units with an investment of Rs 335 crore. The second Shakti line, carrying an outlay of Rs 218 crore, will be able to turn out up to 100 engines a year and is to be fully in place by 2028-29, serving indigenous helicopters such as the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter. Against the order for 240 AL-31FP engines placed with HAL in 2024 for the Su-30MKI fleet, the company delivered the first engine ahead of time and has supplied 63 engines against a two-year target of 60.

Towards a high-thrust engine

For the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme, the government is pursuing an indigenous high-thrust engine with an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore, raw-material indigenisation with Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited and the country's first home-built high-thrust engine testing facility. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi was present; the Minister welcomed the state's clearance for an aerospace and defence equipment manufacturing complex at Gajamara in Dhenkanal and asked HAL to grow Koraput into a wider propulsion ecosystem drawing in MSMEs, start-ups and universities.

Exam Point of View

Note the unit (HAL Koraput Division, set up in 1964), the milestone (2,000th aero-engine), the AL-31FP capacity jump (30 to 50 engines, Rs 335 crore), the second Shakti line (Rs 218 crore, up to 100 engines a year by 2028-29), the 240-engine order of 2024 and the roughly Rs 5,000 crore high-thrust engine effort for the AMCA.

Practice Questions

Q1.DefenceEasy

Which milestone did the Koraput Division of HAL mark on 6 October 2026?

  1. A.Delivery of its 1,000th aero-engine
  2. B.Delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine
  3. C.Overhaul of its 5,000th aero-engine
  4. D.Export of its 500th aero-engine
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine

Explanation

The correct answer is delivery of its 2,000th aero-engine. The Defence Minister was present at Koraput for this handover, which came six decades after the Division was set up in 1964. Option A understates the figure; the thousandth engine is not the milestone being marked here. Option C mixes up two different counts: Koraput has indeed overhauled engines in large numbers, more than 9,000 of them, but the event of the day was a delivery and not an overhaul landmark. Option D is wrong because the announcement concerned supply to India's own Defence Forces rather than exports. Candidates should remember the pairing of two numbers for this unit: 2,000 engines delivered and over 9,000 engines overhauled. The Division's output has powered frontline fighters such as the MiG-21, MiG-27, MiG-29 and the Su-30MKI, and the Minister described the two thousand engines as two thousand contributions to the operational capability of the armed forces.

Q2.DefenceMedium

What is the investment announced for the second Shakti engine production line?

  1. A.Rs 135 crore
  2. B.Rs 218 crore
  3. C.Rs 335 crore
  4. D.Rs 661 crore
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Rs 218 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is Rs 218 crore. The second Shakti engine line carries this outlay and will be able to produce up to 100 engines a year once it is fully established by 2028-29, feeding indigenous helicopters such as the Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter and the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter. Option C, Rs 335 crore, is the separate investment being made to lift annual AL-31FP capacity from 30 to 50 engines, so it belongs to a different announcement of the same day and is a common trap. Option A is not among the figures announced. Option D does not relate to this line either. Keep the two figures distinct: Rs 218 crore for the Shakti line and Rs 335 crore for AL-31FP capacity.

Q3.DefenceMedium

For which aircraft programme is an indigenous high-thrust engine being pursued with an investment of about Rs 5,000 crore?

  1. A.Tejas Mk1A
  2. B.Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)
  3. C.Prachand Light Combat Helicopter
  4. D.Su-30MKI upgrade
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA)

Explanation

The correct answer is the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The Defence Minister said aerospace self-reliance must extend to an indigenous aero-engine capability, especially for the AMCA, and pointed to a proposed investment of around Rs 5,000 crore, indigenisation of raw materials together with Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited and the setting up of India's first home-built high-thrust engine testing facility. Option C, the Prachand Light Combat Helicopter, is served instead by the Shakti engine line, so it is wrong. Option D refers to the AL-31FP engines ordered for the existing Su-30MKI fleet, a separate matter. Option A is not the programme named for the high-thrust engine. The distinction between helicopter engines, fighter engines in service and the future high-thrust engine is worth holding on to.

Q4.DefenceEasy

In which state is the HAL Division that delivered the 2,000th aero-engine located?

  1. A.Odisha
  2. B.Karnataka
  3. C.Uttar Pradesh
  4. D.Telangana
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Odisha

Explanation

The correct answer is Odisha. HAL's Koraput Division sits in that state, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi attended the delivery event. The Defence Minister spoke of Odisha's long coastline, ports, mineral resources and skilled manpower, of the Integrated Test Range at Chandipur, and of the state's approval for an aerospace and defence equipment manufacturing complex at Gajamara in Dhenkanal. Option B, Karnataka, hosts other HAL facilities and is therefore a plausible distractor, but Koraput is not there. Option C and option D are not where this Division is based. Candidates should tie Koraput to Odisha and remember Chandipur and Gajamara as the other defence-linked locations named in the state. The Minister also urged HAL to build Koraput into a wider aerospace propulsion ecosystem by mentoring MSMEs, backing start-ups and young engineers and working with universities and research institutions in the state.
