DRDO Flight-Tests High-Altitude Platform, Reaches 21 km
DRDO flight-tested its indigenous High-Altitude Platform, which climbed to 21 km above mean sea level and stayed at 20 km for more than 30 minutes.

Why in News
On 6 October 2026 DRDO announced the successful flight trial of its indigenous High-Altitude Platform, which reached 21 km above mean sea level and loitered at 20 km for over 30 minutes before a commanded descent and recovery.
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) completed a successful flight trial of the indigenously developed High-Altitude Platform (HAPS), the ministry announced on 6 October 2026. In the experimental flight the platform climbed to 21 km above mean sea level and then held an altitude of 20 km for more than 30 minutes before it was commanded down. The system was recovered intact and its flight performance data was studied.
What the trial showed
Real-time video and every other vehicle parameter reached the Ground Control Station throughout the flight, and the readings matched the performance the designers had intended. The platform carried a set of instrumentation and control electronics, among them an inertial measurement unit, a Global Positioning System receiver, onboard cameras and an altitude control mechanism, besides other sub-systems.
What HAPS is
HAPS is a lighter-than-air system being designed as a long endurance stratospheric aerial surveillance platform. Because it floats rather than flies on thrust, it can stay aloft far longer than an aircraft and watch a wide area from the stratosphere, well above commercial air traffic and weather. The platform is being developed by the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra, a DRDO laboratory.
Agencies involved
- Indian Air Force
- CEMILAC, the military airworthiness certification agency
- Directorate General of Civil Aviation
- Airports Authority of India and other civil authorities
Clearance from civil aviation bodies matters for a trial of this kind, because the platform passes through airspace used by civil flights on its way up and down.
Who said what
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh complimented DRDO, the Indian Air Force, public sector undertakings and industry, and called the trial an important milestone in India's Aatmanirbhar Bharat journey towards a long endurance stratospheric airship. Defence Secretary and Secretary, Department of Defence R&D, and DRDO Chairman Rajesh Kumar Singh congratulated the teams behind the high-altitude airship platform.

Exam Point of View
Remember the system (High-Altitude Platform, HAPS), the altitude attained (21 km AMSL), the loiter altitude and duration (20 km, over 30 minutes), that it is a lighter-than-air stratospheric surveillance platform, the developing laboratory (ADRDE, Agra) and the agencies that joined the trial.
Practice Questions
Which DRDO laboratory is designing and developing the High-Altitude Platform that was flight-tested in October 2026?
- A.Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment, Agra
- B.Defence Electronics Research Laboratory, Hyderabad
- C.Aeronautical Development Establishment, Bengaluru
- D.Research Centre Imarat, Hyderabad
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment, Agra
Explanation
The correct answer is the Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE), Agra. The release states that this laboratory is designing and developing the High-Altitude Platform, a lighter-than-air system meant to work as a long endurance stratospheric aerial surveillance platform. Option B is wrong because the electronics laboratory at Hyderabad is not named as the developer of this platform. Option C is wrong because the establishment at Bengaluru is not credited with the High-Altitude Platform in this trial. Option D is wrong for the same reason; no such centre is mentioned in connection with the system. Candidates should connect the laboratory with the kind of work it does: aerial delivery systems and lighter-than-air platforms, which is why the high-altitude airship project sits with it. The trial itself was carried out in coordination with the Indian Air Force, CEMILAC, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the Airports Authority of India.
What altitude above mean sea level did the platform attain during the experimental flight?
- A.12 km
- B.17 km
- C.21 km
- D.35 km
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 21 km
Explanation
The correct answer is 21 km. In the experimental flight the High-Altitude Platform climbed to that altitude above mean sea level, and it then remained at 20 km above mean sea level for more than 30 minutes before it was commanded to descend back to the ground. The system was recovered successfully and the flight performance data was analysed afterwards. Option A is wrong because the platform went considerably higher than that height. Option B is wrong because, although the platform passed through that level on the way up, the altitude attained in the trial was greater. Option D is wrong because the platform did not reach any such height in this flight. For the examination, keep the two altitudes apart in memory: the peak reached and the level at which the platform loitered, along with the duration of that loiter.
Which statement about the High-Altitude Platform is correct?
- A.It is a supersonic cruise missile
- B.It is a lighter-than-air stratospheric surveillance platform
- C.It is a submarine-launched reconnaissance drone
- D.It is a satellite launch vehicle
Show answer
Correct answer: B. It is a lighter-than-air stratospheric surveillance platform
Explanation
The correct answer is that it is a lighter-than-air stratospheric surveillance platform. The release describes the High-Altitude Platform as a lighter-than-air system being developed as a long endurance stratospheric aerial surveillance platform, and the Defence Minister spoke of the trial as a milestone towards realising a long endurance stratospheric airship. Option A is wrong because the platform is not a missile of any kind; it carried instrumentation such as an inertial measurement unit, a Global Positioning System receiver, onboard cameras and an altitude control mechanism. Option C is wrong because the platform is neither submarine-launched nor a small drone; it climbed into the stratosphere and was recovered after a commanded descent. Option D is wrong because it does not launch satellites. Remember that the flight data reached the Ground Control Station in real time throughout the flight.
Frequently Asked Questions
What altitude did the High-Altitude Platform reach in its flight trial?
It attained 21 km above mean sea level and then remained at 20 km above mean sea level for more than 30 minutes before being commanded to descend. The platform was recovered successfully afterwards.
Which DRDO laboratory is developing HAPS?
The Aerial Delivery Research and Development Establishment (ADRDE) at Agra is designing and developing the High-Altitude Platform as a long endurance stratospheric aerial surveillance platform of the lighter-than-air type.
Which agencies took part in the trial?
The trial was coordinated with the Indian Air Force, CEMILAC, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, the Airports Authority of India and other civil authorities, since the platform crosses airspace used by civil aviation.
