UPSC GK Questions 2026

Static general knowledge is the larger part of every UPSC general studies paper. The notices name the same areas again and again: the history of India and the national movement, Indian and world geography, polity and the Constitution, the economy and social development, and general science with environment and ecology. The balance shifts from exam to exam. NDA puts about half of its General Knowledge part on Physics, Chemistry and General Science. CSE favours polity, modern history, environment and the economy. CAPF adds security and human rights, and CDS spreads its questions across polity, history, geography, the economy and school science.

GK24's GK notes are written topic by topic in English and Hindi, as short, fact-first chapters that are easy to revise. They cover Indian Polity, Indian History, Geography, Indian Economy, General Science, Environment and Ecology, Art and Culture, Computer, and the fact lists of awards, sports, books and days. A new chapter is added in each subject as the series grows. Each note carries practice questions, and those that have appeared in an exam say which exam and year. Start with Polity and modern history, then Geography, the Economy and Science. Read a note, take its topic quiz, and come back to it in your monthly revision.

A vehicle fitted with a catalytic converter must use unleaded petrol because lead:

  1. A.Raises the temperature of the exhaust gases
  2. B.Inactivates the catalyst in the converter
  3. C.Reacts with carbon monoxide to form a solid
  4. D.Reduces the octane number of the fuel
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Inactivates the catalyst in the converter

A catalytic converter holds platinum, palladium and rhodium on a honeycomb support, which oxidise carbon monoxide and unburnt hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide and water and reduce the oxides of nitrogen to nitrogen.

  1. A.Sulphur dioxide
  2. B.Oxides of nitrogen
  3. C.Particulate matter
  4. D.Carbon dioxide
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Particulate matter

PM2.5, the pollutant reported in air quality bulletins, refers to particles whose diameter is:

  1. A.2.5 millimetres or less
  2. B.2.5 nanometres or less
  3. C.2.5 micrometres or less
  4. D.2.5 centimetres or less
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 2.5 micrometres or less

Particulate matter is graded by the diameter of the particles measured in micrometres, so PM10 means particles of ten micrometres or less and PM2.5 means particles of 2.5 micrometres or less, which is about thirty times finer than a human hair.

Carbon monoxide is dangerous to human beings mainly because it:

  1. A.Combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin
  2. B.Dissolves in water to form a strong acid
  3. C.Destroys the ozone layer of the stratosphere
  4. D.Settles in the alveoli as fine dust
Show answer
