Andaman and Nicobar Islands GK: Capital, Tribes and Facts — GK24 title card

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands form India's largest union territory by area among the island territories and one of the most frequently asked entries in static general knowledge. The group lies in the Bay of Bengal, closer to Myanmar and Indonesia than to the Indian mainland, and it supplies examiners with a long list of firsts and onlys: India's southernmost point, India's only active volcano, India's only union territory with a tribe that has never been contacted, and the jail that held hundreds of freedom fighters. This note gathers the facts that papers of SSC, Railway, State and Civil Services exams actually ask.

Location, size and administration

The territory stretches roughly north to south in the Bay of Bengal and consists of about 572 islands, islets and rocks, of which only around 38 are inhabited. Its total area is 8,249 square kilometres. The Andaman group lies to the north and the Nicobar group to the south. The capital, long known as Port Blair, was renamed Sri Vijaya Puram in September 2024. The territory is administered by a Lieutenant Governor, has three districts, namely Nicobar, North and Middle Andaman and South Andaman, and sends one member to the Lok Sabha. It has no representation in the Rajya Sabha. Judicially it falls under the Calcutta High Court, which holds a circuit bench in the capital. Bengali, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Nicobarese are the languages heard here.

Physical features and the channels

The islands are the exposed tops of a submarine mountain range that continues the Arakan Yoma of Myanmar and reappears further south in the Indonesian arc. Saddle Peak in North Andaman, at 732 metres, is the highest point of the territory; Mount Thullier in Great Nicobar, at 642 metres, is the highest in the Nicobar group. Indira Point in Great Nicobar is the southernmost point of India; it was earlier called Pygmalion Point and was partly submerged by the tsunami of December 2004. The channels between and around the islands are a favourite question.

Barren Island, in the Andaman Sea, holds the only active volcano in India and in South Asia. Narcondam Island nearby has a dormant volcano and is the only home of the Narcondam hornbill. The Nicobar megapode, a bird that incubates its eggs in mounds of sand and leaves, is also endemic to these islands.

The tribes of the islands

The indigenous people fall into two broad groups. The Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese of the Andaman group are of Negrito descent and are among the oldest surviving human communities outside Africa. The Nicobarese and the Shompen of the Nicobar group are of Mongoloid descent; the Nicobarese are the largest indigenous community of the territory while the Shompen live in the interior of Great Nicobar. The Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island have resisted all contact and remain the most isolated people in the world. Several of these communities are classified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups and their areas are protected by law against outside entry.

Freedom struggle and the Cellular Jail

The British used the islands as a penal settlement after the revolt of 1857 and built the Cellular Jail at Port Blair between 1896 and 1906. It was designed on the pattern of a bicycle wheel with seven wings radiating from a central tower and 693 cells built so that no prisoner could see or speak to another, which is why it was called cellular. Veer Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt and many others were imprisoned here, and Indians called it Kala Pani. Three of the seven wings survive and the jail was declared a national memorial in 1979. During the Second World War the islands were occupied by Japan, and on 30 December 1943 Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolour at Port Blair, calling the two groups Shaheed and Swaraj. In 2018 those names were revived in a new form: Ross Island became Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island became Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island became Swaraj Dweep.

Protected areas and environment

Tropical evergreen and mangrove forests cover most of the land. The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park at Wandoor, created to protect coral reefs and marine life, and the Rani Jhansi Marine National Park are the two best known marine parks. Saddle Peak National Park lies in North Andaman, and Campbell Bay and Galathea National Parks are in Great Nicobar; Mount Harriet National Park has been renamed Mount Manipur National Park. The Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve was added to the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2013. The state animal is the dugong, the state bird is the Andaman wood pigeon and the state tree is the Andaman padauk.

Census and economy

At the 2011 Census the territory had a population of 3,80,581 with a density of 46 persons per square kilometre, the lowest among the union territories, a literacy rate of 86.27 per cent and a sex ratio of 876 females per thousand males. Fisheries, coconut and areca nut, timber and tourism carry the economy, and the Andaman Trunk Road links the main islands of the Andaman group. The tsunami of 26 December 2004 caused heavy loss of life in the Nicobar group, and the islands remain in a seismically active zone.

Exam Point of View

Questions from this union territory are almost always one-liners of the superlative kind. Learn the only active volcano (Barren Island), the southernmost point of India (Indira Point), the highest peak (Saddle Peak), the channel that divides the two groups (Ten Degree Channel) and the new names of the capital and of Ross, Neil and Havelock islands. The tribe list is asked as a match the following, and the Negrito and Mongoloid division is the key. From history, expect the Cellular Jail with its construction years, seven wings and national memorial status, and the date of Netaji's flag hoisting. Traps that catch candidates are confusing the Ten Degree Channel with the Nine Degree Channel of Lakshadweep, placing Narcondam as the active volcano, calling Mount Thullier the highest peak of the whole territory, and giving the territory a Rajya Sabha seat, which it does not have.

Practice MCQs on this topic

Q1.Indian States & UTsEasy

India's only active volcano is located on which island?

  1. A.Narcondam Island
  2. B.Barren Island
  3. C.Car Nicobar
  4. D.Little Andaman
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Barren Island

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Barren Island. This small uninhabited island in the Andaman Sea, north-east of the territorial capital, carries the only confirmed active volcano in India and in the whole of South Asia. It has erupted repeatedly in recent decades, and because the island has no permanent population the eruptions cause no loss of life.

Option A, Narcondam Island, is the most tempting wrong answer, because it too is a volcanic island of the same arc, but its volcano is dormant; Narcondam is better known as the only home of the Narcondam hornbill. Option C, Car Nicobar, is the administrative centre of the Nicobar district and lies just south of the Ten Degree Channel, but it has no volcano. Option D, Little Andaman, lies north of that channel and is known for the Onge tribe. Remember the pair: Barren is active, Narcondam is dormant.

Q2.Indian States & UTsEasy

The Ten Degree Channel separates which two islands?

  1. A.North Andaman and the Coco Islands
  2. B.South Andaman and Little Andaman
  3. C.Little Andaman and Car Nicobar
  4. D.Minicoy and the rest of Lakshadweep
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Little Andaman and Car Nicobar

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Little Andaman and Car Nicobar. The Ten Degree Channel runs along the ten degree north parallel and divides the Andaman group from the Nicobar group, with Little Andaman on its northern side and Car Nicobar on its southern side. It is a busy sea lane and the single most asked channel from this topic.

Option A describes the Coco Channel, which lies between North Andaman and the Coco Islands belonging to Myanmar. Option B describes Duncan Passage, between South Andaman and Little Andaman. Option D describes the Nine Degree Channel, which is in Lakshadweep and separates Minicoy from the main group of those islands; mixing up the Nine Degree and Ten Degree Channels is the commonest mistake in this question, so link nine with Lakshadweep and ten with Andaman and Nicobar.

Q3.Indian States & UTsMedium

Which is the highest peak of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

  1. A.Mount Thullier
  2. B.Saddle Peak
  3. C.Mount Harriet
  4. D.Mount Diavolo
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Saddle Peak

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Saddle Peak. Saddle Peak rises to 732 metres in North Andaman and is the highest point in the whole union territory. It gives its name to Saddle Peak National Park, which protects the tropical evergreen forest on its slopes.

Option A, Mount Thullier, at 642 metres on Great Nicobar, is the highest point of the Nicobar group but not of the territory as a whole; the question is deliberately framed to catch candidates who remember only this name. Option C, Mount Harriet, in South Andaman, is a well known hill and a national park, since renamed Mount Manipur National Park, but it is much lower. Option D, Mount Diavolo, is a hill in Middle Andaman and is also lower than Saddle Peak. Learn the pair of figures together: 732 metres for Saddle Peak and 642 metres for Mount Thullier.

Q4.Indian States & UTsEasy

Indira Point, the southernmost point of India, is situated on which island?

  1. A.Great Nicobar
  2. B.Little Nicobar
  3. C.North Sentinel
  4. D.Middle Andaman
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Great Nicobar

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Great Nicobar. Indira Point lies at the southern tip of Great Nicobar, the largest island of the Nicobar group, and marks the southernmost land point of the Republic of India, a little above six and three quarter degrees north. It was earlier called Pygmalion Point and was partly submerged when the land subsided during the earthquake and tsunami of December 2004.

Option B, Little Nicobar, lies to the north of Great Nicobar and does not reach as far south. Option C, North Sentinel, is in the Andaman group far to the north and is famous as the home of the uncontacted Sentinelese. Option D, Middle Andaman, is in the middle of the Andaman group. A related point worth remembering is that Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of mainland India, while Indira Point is the southernmost point of the country including its islands.

Q5.Indian States & UTsEasy

In September 2024 the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Port Blair, was renamed as:

  1. A.Shaheed Nagar
  2. B.Sri Vijaya Puram
  3. C.Swaraj Puram
  4. D.Netaji Nagar
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sri Vijaya Puram

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Sri Vijaya Puram. The Government of India announced in September 2024 that the capital of the union territory would be renamed Sri Vijaya Puram, replacing a name that came from the colonial period. The new name was explained as a tribute to the islands' part in the freedom struggle and to the maritime history of the region.

Option C, Swaraj Puram, is close to Swaraj Dweep, which is the new name of Havelock Island given in 2018, so it is a well designed distractor. Option A, Shaheed Nagar, echoes Shaheed Dweep, the new name of Neil Island from the same 2018 decision. Option D, Netaji Nagar, echoes Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, the new name of Ross Island. Keep the four renamings separate: the capital is Sri Vijaya Puram, and Ross, Neil and Havelock are Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Shaheed Dweep and Swaraj Dweep.

Q6.Indian States & UTsMedium

Which of the following tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is NOT of Negrito descent?

  1. A.Jarawa
  2. B.Onge
  3. C.Shompen
  4. D.Great Andamanese
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Shompen

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Shompen. The indigenous communities of this territory fall into two racial groups. The Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese of the Andaman group are of Negrito descent and are among the oldest surviving human populations outside Africa. The Shompen and the Nicobarese of the Nicobar group are of Mongoloid descent, and the Shompen live in the forested interior of Great Nicobar.

Option A, Jarawa, live in the western parts of South and Middle Andaman and are Negrito. Option B, Onge, are found on Little Andaman and are Negrito. Option D, Great Andamanese, were once spread across the Andaman group and are Negrito; their numbers are now very small. Remember the simple division: four Negrito tribes in the Andaman group and two Mongoloid communities in the Nicobar group, with the Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island still uncontacted.

Q7.Indian States & UTsMedium

The Cellular Jail, now a national memorial, was constructed by the British between which years?

  1. A.1857 and 1867
  2. B.1896 and 1906
  3. C.1911 and 1921
  4. D.1931 and 1942
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 1896 and 1906

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1896 and 1906. The jail was built at Port Blair over those ten years in the shape of a wheel, with seven wings radiating from a central watchtower and a total of 693 cells. Each cell held one prisoner, and the wings were set so that the back of one faced the front of the next, making communication between prisoners impossible; hence the name cellular. It was declared a national memorial in 1979.

Option A takes the year of the revolt of 1857, after which the islands were first used as a penal settlement, but the jail building itself came four decades later. Option C, 1911 to 1921, covers the period when many revolutionaries including Veer Savarkar were actually serving their terms there, which is why it tempts candidates. Option D falls in the years just before the Japanese occupation of the islands during the Second World War. Fix 1896 to 1906 for construction and 1979 for memorial status.

Q8.Indian States & UTsMedium

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the Indian tricolour at Port Blair on which date?

  1. A.26 January 1943
  2. B.21 October 1943
  3. C.30 December 1943
  4. D.15 August 1944
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 30 December 1943

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 30 December 1943. During the Japanese occupation of the islands in the Second World War, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose visited Port Blair and hoisted the tricolour there, claiming the islands as the first Indian territory freed from British rule. He gave the Andaman group the name Shaheed and the Nicobar group the name Swaraj, words that were revived in 2018 for Neil Island and Havelock Island.

Option A, 26 January 1943, is picked because of Republic Day, which has no connection with this event. Option B, 21 October 1943, is the day the Provisional Government of Free India, the Azad Hind government, was proclaimed at Singapore, an important date but a different one. Option D, 15 August 1944, uses the Independence Day date and is a pure distractor. Remember 21 October 1943 for the Azad Hind proclamation and 30 December 1943 for the flag hoisting at Port Blair.

Q9.Indian States & UTsMedium

Ross Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands was renamed in 2018 as:

  1. A.Shaheed Dweep
  2. B.Swaraj Dweep
  3. C.Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep
  4. D.Sri Vijaya Dweep
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep. Ross Island, which had been the administrative headquarters of the British in these islands before an earthquake damaged it, was renamed after Netaji in 2018 to honour his visit and his claim of the islands as free Indian soil. The island lies close to the capital and is known for its ruined colonial buildings.

Option A, Shaheed Dweep, is the new name of Neil Island. Option B, Swaraj Dweep, is the new name of Havelock Island, the best known tourist island of the group. Option D, Sri Vijaya Dweep, does not exist; Sri Vijaya Puram is the new name of the capital town, announced separately in September 2024. The three 2018 renamings and the 2024 renaming of the capital are asked in both directions, so learn each pair carefully.

Q10.Indian States & UTsHard

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands fall under the jurisdiction of which High Court?

  1. A.Madras High Court
  2. B.Calcutta High Court
  3. C.Andhra Pradesh High Court
  4. D.Orissa High Court
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Calcutta High Court

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Calcutta High Court. The union territory has no High Court of its own and comes under the jurisdiction of the Calcutta High Court, which holds a circuit bench in the territorial capital so that litigants do not have to travel to the mainland for every hearing. The link is historical, since the islands were administered from Bengal in the colonial period.

Option A, Madras High Court, has jurisdiction over Puducherry and is the usual wrong answer here because of the geographical closeness of the islands to the southern coast. Option C, Andhra Pradesh High Court, and option D, Orissa High Court, have no such jurisdiction. Remember the related pairings for union territories: Delhi has its own High Court, Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh share one, Lakshadweep comes under Kerala, Puducherry under Madras, and Andaman and Nicobar under Calcutta.

Q11.Indian States & UTsHard

The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is located at:

  1. A.Wandoor, South Andaman
  2. B.Campbell Bay, Great Nicobar
  3. C.Diglipur, North Andaman
  4. D.Car Nicobar
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Wandoor, South Andaman

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Wandoor, South Andaman. The Mahatma Gandhi Marine National Park, set up near Wandoor on the south-western coast of South Andaman, protects a stretch of coral reefs, mangroves and small islands along with the turtles, molluscs and reef fish that live there. It is the best known marine protected area of the territory and is often visited for glass-bottom boat viewing of the reefs.

Option B, Campbell Bay, in Great Nicobar, is the location of Campbell Bay National Park, a different protected area, and Galathea National Park is also on that island. Option C, Diglipur, in North Andaman, is close to Saddle Peak National Park, which is a terrestrial park, not a marine one. Option D, Car Nicobar, is the headquarters of the Nicobar district and has no national park of this name. The other marine park to remember is Rani Jhansi Marine National Park.

Q12.Indian States & UTsHard

As per the Census of 2011, which of the following statements about the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is correct?

  1. A.Its population density was the lowest among the union territories
  2. B.Its literacy rate was below the national average
  3. C.Its sex ratio was above one thousand
  4. D.It had the largest population among the union territories
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Its population density was the lowest among the union territories

Explanation

The correct answer is A, its population density was the lowest among the union territories. With a population of 3,80,581 spread over 8,249 square kilometres, the territory recorded a density of only 46 persons per square kilometre at the 2011 Census, by far the lowest among the union territories, because most of its land is forest and most of its islands are uninhabited.

Option B is wrong because its literacy rate of 86.27 per cent was well above the national figure and among the highest in the country. Option C is wrong because the sex ratio was 876 females per thousand males, below the national average, a legacy of migration of working men to the islands. Option D is wrong because Delhi had the largest population among the union territories by a very wide margin, while the Andaman and Nicobar Islands had one of the smallest.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

The capital is Sri Vijaya Puram. The town was known as Port Blair until September 2024, when the Government of India renamed it Sri Vijaya Puram to remove a colonial-era name and to mark the islands' place in the freedom struggle. Many older books and some official records still use the name Port Blair.

Where is India's only active volcano?

On Barren Island in the Andaman Sea, about 135 kilometres north-east of the capital. It is the only confirmed active volcano in India and in South Asia, and it has erupted several times in recent decades. Narcondam Island, which lies nearby, has a volcano that is dormant and is often set as a wrong option in this question.

What does the Ten Degree Channel separate?

It separates Little Andaman in the Andaman group from Car Nicobar in the Nicobar group, so in effect it divides the Andaman Islands from the Nicobar Islands. It takes its name from the ten degree north line of latitude that runs through it. Do not confuse it with the Nine Degree Channel, which separates Minicoy from the rest of Lakshadweep.

Which tribes live in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands?

The Andaman group is home to the Great Andamanese, Onge, Jarawa and Sentinelese, who are of Negrito descent. The Nicobar group is home to the Nicobarese and the Shompen, who are of Mongoloid descent. The Sentinelese of North Sentinel Island have refused all contact with outsiders and several of these communities are listed as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups.

Why was the Cellular Jail given that name?

Because it was built entirely of single cells. Constructed between 1896 and 1906 at Port Blair, it had seven wings spreading out from a central watchtower and 693 cells, arranged so that the back of one wing faced the front of the next and no prisoner could see or communicate with another. Solitary confinement was the design, and Indians called the place Kala Pani.

Which islands were renamed in 2018 and what are their new names?

Ross Island was renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep, Neil Island became Shaheed Dweep and Havelock Island became Swaraj Dweep. The names Shaheed and Swaraj go back to 30 December 1943, when Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose hoisted the tricolour at Port Blair and used those words for the two island groups.
