Silkworm Seed Centre at Jorhat Gets Grainage, Cold Storage
Union Minister of State Pabitra Margherita opened a new grainage building and cold storage at the silkworm seed production centre in Jorhat, Assam.

Why in News
On 8 October 2026 Union Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita inaugurated a new grainage building and cold storage facility at the Central Silk Board Silkworm Seed Production Centre at Rowriah, Jorhat, Assam, built under the North-East Region Textile Promotion Scheme.
Union Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita inaugurated a newly built grainage building and cold storage facility at the Central Silk Board's Silkworm Seed Production Centre (SSPC) at Rowriah, Jorhat, in Assam on 8 October 2026. The facility was set up under the North-East Region Textile Promotion Scheme (NERTPS) and is meant to modernise sericulture infrastructure and shore up rural livelihoods in the region.
What the facility can do
The new unit can produce 30 lakh disease-free layings (DFLs) of mulberry hybrid seed a year and can preserve up to 1 crore DFLs. Quality silkworm seed reaching farmers on time is the bottleneck in sericulture, and the upgrade is aimed squarely at it: better seed production efficiency, a stronger regional value chain, jobs, and business for local suppliers and traders.
Assam's place in India's silk map
Addressing the gathering, the minister set out the State's weight in the national silk economy. Assam accounts for roughly 84 per cent of India's Muga silk, which works out to 73 metric tonnes, and about 74 per cent of Eri silk production, or 2,131 metric tonnes. In 2026-27, up to July, the State recorded 6 per cent of mulberry raw silk output, amounting to 9 metric tonnes. For the North-Eastern Region as a whole over the same period, the figures stood as below.
| Variety | North-Eastern Region output |
| Mulberry silk | 142 metric tonnes |
| Eri silk | 2,890 metric tonnes |
| Muga silk | 87 metric tonnes |
| Tasar silk | 3 metric tonnes |
Seed network and employment
The minister described the Central Silk Board's seed production network as covering both the mulberry and the Vanya sectors. The Board's national silkworm seed organisation serves the mulberry seed sector, while two other organisations support the Vanya seed sector. Sericulture is estimated to provide employment to about 29.50 lakh persons during 2025-26, which is why seed quality carries consequences well beyond the farm gate. He said quality seed, modern infrastructure, technology and skill development together decide whether the sector stays productive and sustainable, and he named Mission Senehjori as a route to turning Muga silk into a high-value product for world markets.
What else happened
A Seri-Stakeholder Meet was held alongside the inauguration to take up the sector's problems with those working in it. Progressive sericulture farmers were felicitated and P1 disease-free layings were distributed directly to farmers. Certificates went to trainees who completed training under the Textiles Ministry's Samarth scheme for skill development. The minister pressed for closer work between the Central Silk Board, the State government, research institutions, farmers and entrepreneurs, placing the effort within the goals of an Aatmanirbhar North-East and a Viksit Assam. Among those present were Kamakhya Prasad Tasa, Member of Parliament from Kaziranga, Hitendra Nath Goswami, Member of the Legislative Assembly from Jorhat, Assam's Director of Sericulture Lakhimi Dutta and Central Silk Board Member Secretary P. Sivakumar.

Exam Point of View
Remember who inaugurated it (Minister of State for Textiles Pabitra Margherita), the place (CSB Silkworm Seed Production Centre, Rowriah, Jorhat, Assam), the scheme (North-East Region Textile Promotion Scheme), the capacity (30 lakh DFLs a year, preservation of 1 crore DFLs), Assam’s share of Muga silk (about 84 per cent, 73 MT) and Eri silk (about 74 per cent, 2,131 MT), the regional output figures, the employment estimate of 29.50 lakh persons in 2025-26, and the schemes named, Mission Senehjori and Samarth.
Practice Questions
The new grainage and cold storage facility inaugurated in October 2026 is located at which silkworm seed production centre?
- A.Rowriah, Jorhat, Assam
- B.Lahdoigarh, Jorhat, Assam
- C.Mysuru, Karnataka
- D.Berhampore, West Bengal
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Rowriah, Jorhat, Assam. The Central Silk Board’s Silkworm Seed Production Centre there received a newly constructed grainage building and cold storage facility, inaugurated by the Union Minister of State for Textiles under the North-East Region Textile Promotion Scheme. Option B names another locality near the same town and is the kind of near-miss that catches a candidate who remembers only the district. Options C and D name places long associated with silk research and seed work elsewhere in the country, which is precisely why they are planted here; neither features in this inauguration. The facility can produce 30 lakh disease-free layings of mulberry hybrid seed a year and preserve up to 1 crore of them, so quality seed should reach the region’s farmers on time.
Assam accounts for approximately what share of India's Muga silk production?
- A.54 per cent
- B.64 per cent
- C.74 per cent
- D.84 per cent
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is about 84 per cent, which works out to 73 metric tonnes of Muga silk. The trap here is option C: 74 per cent is Assam’s share of Eri silk production, amounting to 2,131 metric tonnes, and the two shares are routinely swapped in question papers, so the pairing must be learnt together. Options A and B are invented figures. Muga is the golden silk for which Assam is known, and the minister pointed to Mission Senehjori as a way of turning it into a high-value product for global markets. For completeness, the State recorded 6 per cent of mulberry raw silk output, or 9 metric tonnes, in 2026-27 up to July, and the whole North-Eastern Region recorded 142 metric tonnes of mulberry silk in the same period.
Sericulture is estimated to provide employment to how many persons during 2025-26?
- A.About 9.50 lakh persons
- B.About 19.50 lakh persons
- C.About 29.50 lakh persons
- D.About 39.50 lakh persons
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is about 29.50 lakh persons. The minister cited this estimate to show how much livelihood depends on the sector, which is the reason seed quality and modern infrastructure matter well beyond the rearing shed. Options A, B and D alter the leading digit of the real figure and are the standard distractors for an employment number. The context is worth remembering with it: the Central Silk Board’s seed network covers both the mulberry and the Vanya sectors, with its national silkworm seed organisation serving the mulberry side and two separate organisations supporting Vanya seed. The minister argued that quality silkworm seed, modern infrastructure, technology and skill development together decide whether sericulture stays productive, and he linked the effort to an Aatmanirbhar North-East.
