On 9 October 2026 the Union Secretary of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Shri Sudhansh Pant, inaugurated a five-day geriatric care training programme of the National Institute of Social Defence at Diu in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu.

Sudhansh Pant, Secretary in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, opened a five-day Geriatric Care Training Programme at the Education Hub in Kevdi, Diu, in the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, on 9 October 2026. The course is run by the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), which works under the Ministry, together with the Office of the Collector, Diu, and the Union Territory administration.

Who attended

Joint Secretaries of the Ministry, Dr Sandeep R Rathod and Shri Sajeesh Kumar N, and the Director of NISD, Shri Gaurav Singh Rajawat, were at the inaugural session, where the Collector of Diu, Shri Rahul Dev Boora, welcomed the participants. Shri Pant later administered the Pledge for Welfare of Senior Citizens to those being trained. Ms. Asha Sharma, Course Coordinator, and Ms. Ritu Dandriyal, Junior Consultant, both of the Senior Citizen Division of NISD, are conducting the course.

What the training aims at

The Secretary said the programme should leave behind a pool of about 50 trained and sensitised Anganwadi workers and other frontline functionaries in Diu district who can give basic care to older persons, spot those who need more help, point families to the right government schemes and offer emotional support. The content has been shaped around the needs of senior citizens in Diu, with attention to those living alone, those who need help with Activities of Daily Living and those with little family support.

What is taught

Sessions cover the ageing process and the rights and dignity of older persons, the duties of families, communities and caregivers, personal hygiene, nutrition and hydration, help with medicines, mobility support and safe transfer techniques, fall prevention and home safety. The course also takes up basic first aid, responses to common emergencies, communication skills, psychosocial support, loneliness and isolation, and awareness of dementia. Special stress is laid on preventing, spotting and reporting neglect, abuse and exploitation of senior citizens while protecting their privacy and dignity. Lectures, demonstrations, case studies, practical exercises and group work are combined so that the trainees can apply what they learn in their own villages and wards.

  1. A.National Institute of Social Defence
  2. B.National Institute of Public Cooperation and Child Development
  3. C.National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences
  4. D.National Institute of Educational Planning and Administration
Show answer
Correct answer: A. National Institute of Social Defence

Explanation

The correct answer is the National Institute of Social Defence, which works under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment and is running the course with the Office of the Collector, Diu, and the administration of the Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu. Its Senior Citizen Division is conducting the sessions through Course Coordinator Ms. Asha Sharma and Junior Consultant Ms. Ritu Dandriyal. Option B is a body that works in the field of child development and women, not elderly care training of this kind. Option C is a mental health and neurosciences institute, and option D works on educational planning, so neither is connected with this programme. Candidates should fix in mind that geriatric care and welfare of senior citizens fall under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, with the National Institute of Social Defence as its training arm.

Q2.NationalEasy

Show answer
Correct answer: C. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu

Explanation

The programme was opened at the Education Hub at Kevdi in Diu, which is part of this Union Territory, and the Collector of Diu, Shri Rahul Dev Boora, welcomed the dignitaries and participants at the inaugural session. Options A, B and D name other Union Territories that have no role in this programme; they are plausible only because training programmes of this type are held across Union Territories. The training has been shaped for the circumstances of senior citizens in Diu district in particular, with attention to older persons living alone, those needing help with Activities of Daily Living, and those with limited family support, and it is meant to strengthen locally available support systems.

The rest of the event is worth remembering with the pledge: Joint Secretaries Dr Sandeep R Rathod and Shri Sajeesh Kumar N and the Director of the National Institute of Social Defence, Shri Gaurav Singh Rajawat, attended, and the training is expected to leave a pool of about 50 trained and sensitised Anganwadi workers and other frontline functionaries in Diu district who can identify care needs early and arrange referral support.
