The National Medical Library held the 5th ERMED Consortium conference in New Delhi on the theme of digital health resources redefining access through libraries.

Why in News
On 9 October 2026 the National Medical Library in New Delhi organised the 5th One-Day National Training-cum-Conference on the ERMED Consortium, on the theme Digital Health Resources: Redefining Access Through Libraries.
The National Medical Library (NML), which works under the Directorate General of Health Services in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, held the 5th One-Day National Training-cum-Conference on the ERMED Consortium at its own premises in New Delhi on 9 October 2026.
The theme and who spoke
The conference carried the theme Digital Health Resources: Redefining Access Through Libraries. The inaugural session was attended by Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Dr. Vinod Kotwal, Additional Secretary in the ministry, and Dr. Lovneesh G. Krishna, Director General of Health Services.
What the Health Secretary said
The Health Secretary described the library as a gateway to knowledge that underpins medical education, research and care. She noted that the NML network now reaches 93 medical colleges and pressed for it to be stretched to every medical college in the country, especially those in underserved areas. Digital health resources, she argued, are not merely a way of reaching information but an enabler of a research culture, and she placed the One Nation One Subscription initiative alongside the ERMED Consortium as complementary routes to scholarly publications. She asked the library to draw up a roadmap that includes the place of artificial intelligence in medical education and research, and to help states and union territories adopt good medical library practices.
What the DGHS said
Dr. Krishna said libraries are turning from physical places people visit into platforms that carry knowledge to the user, and called the consortium's reshaping in 2024 an important move towards shared access. Citing the National Education Policy 2020 and One Nation One Subscription, he said medical libraries must convert information into evidence, evidence into knowledge and knowledge into better care, with more stress on AI literacy and research skills. Dr. Kotwal said faculty, infrastructure and knowledge resources are the three pillars of a medical college.

Practice Questions
What was the theme of the 5th National Training-cum-Conference on the ERMED Consortium?
- A.Health for All Through Technology
- B.Digital Health Resources: Redefining Access Through Libraries
- C.Libraries for a Viksit Bharat
- D.Evidence to Action in Clinical Practice
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Digital Health Resources: Redefining Access Through Libraries. The National Medical Library, which functions under the Directorate General of Health Services in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, organised the one-day conference on this theme in New Delhi, drawing attention to the place of digital knowledge resources in healthcare delivery, medical education and evidence-based clinical practice. Options A, C and D are invented titles. Option C is a plausible distractor because the Health Secretary did speak of the library contributing to the vision of Viksit Bharat, and option D echoes the idea voiced by the Director General of Health Services that libraries must turn information into evidence and evidence into better healthcare, but neither phrase was the theme. Candidates should also fix the edition in memory, since this was the fifth such conference.
According to the Union Health Secretary, the National Medical Library network has expanded to how many medical colleges?
- A.63 medical colleges
- B.78 medical colleges
- C.93 medical colleges
- D.120 medical colleges
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 93 medical colleges. Smt. Punya Salila Srivastava, Secretary in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, highlighted the growth of the National Medical Library network to that many colleges and urged that its reach be extended to every medical college in the country, with particular attention to institutions in underserved areas so that access to quality medical literature and digital learning resources is equitable. Options A, B and D name counts that appear nowhere in the account of the conference. The figure is worth remembering together with two policy names she invoked, namely the One Nation One Subscription initiative and the ERMED Consortium, which she described as complementary ways of widening access to scholarly publications for clinicians, researchers and students.
Hands-on training at the conference covered which four ERMED resource platforms?
- A.ClinicalKey, BMJ, Access Medicine and MedOne
- B.PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and JSTOR
- C.Cochrane, Embase, UpToDate and Medline
- D.ClinicalKey, Scopus, Cochrane and MedOne
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is ClinicalKey, BMJ, Access Medicine and MedOne. A central feature of the conference was practical training on these four platforms, meant to familiarise medical librarians and healthcare professionals with them and strengthen their ability to reach clinical information and academic resources. Option B lists well-known databases and archives, but none of them was named in the training. Option C names clinical evidence resources that likewise do not appear in the account. Option D is the trickiest, since it keeps two correct names and swaps in two that were never mentioned, which is exactly how such questions are set. Candidates should also recall the panel discussion of the day, titled From Custodian to Clinical Partner: The Next Mandate for the Medical Librarian.
