CTIL Marks 9th Anniversary, Releases Trade Magazine

Why in News

The ninth anniversary celebration of the Centre for Trade and Investment Law, held at the Prime Minister's Museum and Library in New Delhi on 7 October 2026 and reported on 9 October 2026, saw the release of the CTIL Magazine and a special edition of Investment Law Compass.

The Centre for Trade and Investment Law (CTIL) marked its ninth anniversary at the Prime Minister's Museum and Library in New Delhi on 7 October 2026, with two publications released and the institution's record in trade negotiations set out by speaker after speaker.

What the Commerce Secretary said

Commerce Secretary Shri Rajesh Agrawal, speaking by video, said settled rules were being questioned while new issues such as sustainability-linked trade measures and digital trade were reshaping the global trade agenda, so rigorous legal thinking mattered more than ever. He congratulated the centre on completing nine years and recalled its legal analysis and specialised support to the Department of Commerce in free trade agreement talks, dispute settlement and the building of institutional memory.

The Supreme Court judge's view

Justice P. S. Narasimha, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, said India needs institutions that can shape international economic law and not merely follow it. He traced how international investment law has moved from protecting foreign investment towards recognising the regulatory freedom of states, and said the field is entering a phase where institutionalisation, legitimacy and the balance between investment and public power weigh heavily. He called for a durable framework that holds investment protection and state regulatory authority together.

He said CTIL has given more than 4,000 legal opinions, taken part in negotiations on nearly ten free trade agreements and contributed to WTO negotiations, submissions, notifications and dispute settlement. Additional Secretary Shri Yashvir Singh delivered the special address, pointing to CTIL's support in major trade engagements including the G20 and BRICS. IIFT Vice Chancellor Dr. K. Rangarajan traced the growth of specialised trade-policy institutions at IIFT, and Joint Secretary Smt. Exam Point of View

Remember that CTIL stands for the Centre for Trade and Investment Law, that it is housed at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade with Prof. James J. Nedumpara as Head and WTO India Chair, that it completed nine years on 7 October 2026 at the Prime Minister's Museum and Library in New Delhi, that it has given more than 4,000 legal opinions and worked on nearly ten free trade agreements, and that the two publications released were the CTIL Magazine on sustainability and a special edition of Investment Law Compass.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalMedium

CTIL, which marked its ninth anniversary in New Delhi, is housed at which institution?

  1. A.Indian Institute of Foreign Trade
  2. B.Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations
  3. C.National Law University, Delhi
  4. D.Indian Institute of Public Administration
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Indian Institute of Foreign Trade

Explanation

The correct answer is the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade. The Centre for Trade and Investment Law is housed there, and its Head, Prof. James J. Nedumpara, also holds the WTO India Chair. He said the centre was established to strengthen India's trade capacity as a broader element of economic statecraft, and noted that it has given more than four thousand legal opinions. The Vice Chancellor of the institute, Dr. K. Rangarajan, spoke at the anniversary about how specialised trade-policy institutions had grown there. Options B, C and D name respected bodies in economics, law and public administration, but none of them hosts the centre. The anniversary was held at the Prime Minister's Museum and Library in New Delhi, which was the venue and not the parent institution, a distinction worth keeping clear.

Q2.NationalMedium

How many legal opinions has CTIL provided, according to its Head at the ninth anniversary celebration?

  1. A.More than 1,500
  2. B.More than 2,500
  3. C.More than 4,000
  4. D.More than 6,500
Show answer
Correct answer: C. More than 4,000

Explanation

The correct answer is more than 4,000. Prof. James J. Nedumpara, Head of the Centre for Trade and Investment Law and WTO India Chair, said the centre had provided that many legal opinions, had participated in negotiations concerning nearly ten free trade agreements, and had contributed to negotiations, submissions, notifications and dispute settlement at the World Trade Organization. Options A, B and D are invented totals and appear nowhere in the account of the event. Candidates should pair the figure with the other number from the same sentence, namely the count of free trade agreements, and with the areas the Joint Secretary listed as the centre's newer research interests, which were critical minerals, semiconductors, artificial intelligence, supply chains, climate and sustainability.

Q3.NationalHard

What is the title of the ninth anniversary issue of the CTIL Magazine released at the event?

  1. A.Trade in a Fragmented World
  2. B.The Emerging Sustainability Landscape: Responding to Shifting Winds
  3. C.Investment Law Compass: Nine Years On
  4. D.Digital Trade and the Developing World
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The Emerging Sustainability Landscape: Responding to Shifting Winds

Explanation

The correct answer is The Emerging Sustainability Landscape: Responding to Shifting Winds. That issue of the CTIL Magazine examines the opportunities and the challenges developing countries may face as they take part in the evolving intersection of trade and sustainability. Option C is the distractor to watch, because Investment Law Compass is a real publication of the centre, its monthly newsletter on developments in investment law and policy, and a special anniversary edition of it was launched at the same event, but that is the newsletter and not the magazine. Options A and D are invented titles, though both touch themes the speakers raised, since the Commerce Secretary spoke of digital trade and sustainability-linked trade measures reshaping the global agenda. The ceremony ended with Distinguished Long Service Awards for CTIL faculty and staff.
