Why in News

On 10 October 2026 the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shreyas, Yard 3040, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers in Kolkata in the presence of the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff.

Shreyas, the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel (NGOPV) bearing the yard number 3040, was launched at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) in Kolkata on 10 October 2026. The ship was launched by Mrs Reyman Kochhar in the presence of Vice Admiral Ajay Kochhar, the Vice Chief of the Naval Staff. Senior officers of the Indian Navy and officials of the Ministry of Defence, GRSE and partner firms from industry attended the ceremony, which followed the traditions and ethos of the Indian Navy.

The name

Ships of this class take their names from India's heritage. Shreyas is a Sanskrit word meaning 'best' or 'most excellent'. Naming a warship in this way links the new vessel to the cultural idiom the Navy has used for its recent classes.

Two shipyards building the class

Construction of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels is going on at the same time at two yards: Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) in Goa and GRSE in Kolkata. The ships are designed and built in India. They will add to the Navy's existing fleet of Offshore Patrol Vessels and Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels.

What the ships will do

The class is meant for multi-domain operations. The roles listed for these vessels are maritime surveillance, search and rescue, protection of offshore assets, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, and anti-piracy missions. Offshore patrol vessels of this kind spend long periods at sea on policing duties in India's exclusive economic zone, which keeps the larger frontline warships free for other tasks.

Indigenous shipbuilding

The launch was described as another milestone in the Indian Navy's drive towards indigenous shipbuilding. It sits with the Government of India's wider push for Aatmanirbhar Bharat and the Make in India initiative, under which warship design and construction have moved steadily to Indian yards. For exam purposes it is worth noting the distinction between a launch, when a hull enters the water, and commissioning, when the ship formally joins the fleet after trials. GRSE, a defence public sector shipyard on the Hooghly at Kolkata, has delivered a long line of warships to the Navy and the Coast Guard, while Goa Shipyard Limited is the other yard engaged on this particular class of patrol vessels.

Practice Questions

Q1.DefenceEasy

At which shipyard was the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel Shreyas launched?

  1. A.Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders, Mumbai
  2. B.Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata
  3. C.Cochin Shipyard, Kochi
  4. D.Hindustan Shipyard, Visakhapatnam
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata

Explanation

The correct answer is Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkata, where Shreyas, carrying the yard number 3040, was launched. Option A, Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders in Mumbai, builds destroyers and submarines for the Navy but had no part in this launch. Option C, Cochin Shipyard in Kochi, is the yard associated with the indigenous aircraft carrier, not with this class of patrol vessels. Option D, Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam, is another defence yard that is not involved in this programme. The point to remember is that the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels are being built at two yards at the same time, Goa Shipyard Limited in Goa and GRSE in Kolkata, and this particular hull came from the Kolkata yard.

Q2.DefenceMedium

What is the meaning of the name given to the newly launched Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessel?

  1. A.'Courage' or 'valour'
  2. B.'Best' or 'most excellent'
  3. C.'Guardian of the seas'
  4. D.'Invincible'
Show answer
Correct answer: B. 'Best' or 'most excellent'

Explanation

The correct answer is 'best' or 'most excellent', which is what Shreyas means in Sanskrit. Ships of this class are named from India's rich heritage, and this vessel's name was chosen in that spirit. Option A is wrong because courage and valour are the sense of other Sanskrit warship names, not of Shreyas. Option C is wrong because no such meaning was given for this name, although guarding the seas does describe the vessel's duties of maritime surveillance and protection of offshore assets. Option D is wrong for the same reason; invincibility is a common theme in naval naming but is not the meaning here. Candidates should remember both the name and its meaning, since questions often pair a warship with the sense of its name.

Q3.DefenceMedium

Which two shipyards are building the Indian Navy's Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels?

  1. A.Goa Shipyard Limited and GRSE Kolkata
  2. B.Mazagon Dock and Cochin Shipyard
  3. C.Cochin Shipyard and Goa Shipyard Limited
  4. D.GRSE Kolkata and Hindustan Shipyard
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Goa Shipyard Limited and GRSE Kolkata

Explanation

The correct answer is Goa Shipyard Limited and GRSE Kolkata. Construction of the Next Generation Offshore Patrol Vessels is being carried out at these two yards at the same time, and the ships are both designed and built in India. Options B, C and D each pair one correct or plausible yard with one that is not part of this programme, which is what makes them attractive but wrong. Mazagon Dock, Cochin Shipyard and Hindustan Shipyard are all important Indian builders with other orders, yet none of them is listed for this class. These vessels will supplement the existing Offshore Patrol Vessels and Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels of the fleet, and the programme is tied to the goals of Aatmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India in warship construction.
