Why in News

On 10 October 2026 Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan visited the Sainya Sampark Mela - Sadaiv Aapke Saath organised by the Indian Army at Deoghar in Jharkhand, and called for a lasting national commitment to the welfare of veterans and Veer Naris.

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan went to the Sainya Sampark Mela - Sadaiv Aapke Saath at Deoghar in Jharkhand on 10 October 2026. The mela was put together by the Indian Army with the Deoghar district administration, and it set out welfare services and grievance redressal for ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their dependents living across the Santhal Pargana region.

What the Vice-President said

His central line was that soldiers have always stood with the country, so the country must always stand with them and with their families. He asked for a lasting national commitment to the welfare of veterans and Veer Naris. Veterans, he said, are an important national resource: their experience can guide the young and their leadership can add to nation-building. Saluting the Veer Naris, he noted that behind every soldier posted at the border is a family that carries a share of the sacrifice and the responsibility.

Jharkhand and its soldiers

Recalling his own term as Governor of Jharkhand, the Vice-President spoke of the State's long record of military service. He paid tribute to Param Vir Chakra awardee Lance Naik Albert Ekka and recalled the tribal freedom fighters of the region, among them Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Tilka Manjhi, Sidhu and Kanhu, and Nilambar and Pitambar.

Services under one roof

He pointed to the fulfilment of the long-pending demand for One Rank, One Pension and to other welfare measures for veterans and Veer Naris. The single-window arrangement at the mela drew his praise: pension help, medical facilities, documentation services and grievance redressal were brought on to one platform, which he called a real example of last-mile delivery. Stalls at the venue covered displays of weapons and military equipment, disaster relief gear, Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS) services, medical screening and blood donation camps, women's health awareness work, NCC activities and pension-related services.

Who was present

The Vice-President asked that the theme Sadaiv Aapke Saath, meaning Always with You, become a continuing national commitment. He said the presence together of the armed forces, the civil administration, financial institutions, healthcare providers and welfare agencies showed a shared duty towards those who have served. Jharkhand Governor Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Prataprao Jadhav, Members of Parliament Nishikant Dubey and Aditya Sahu, General Officer Commanding of 111 Area Lt Gen Pawan Chadha and Baba Baidyanath Medical Trust chairperson Anamika Gautam were among those at the event.

Practice Questions

Q1.DefenceEasy

The Sainya Sampark Mela visited by the Vice-President on 10 October 2026 was held at which place?

  1. A.Ranchi, Jharkhand
  2. B.Deoghar, Jharkhand
  3. C.Dumka, Jharkhand
  4. D.Bokaro, Jharkhand
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Deoghar, Jharkhand

Explanation

The correct answer is Deoghar, Jharkhand. The mela, named Sainya Sampark Mela - Sadaiv Aapke Saath, was held at Deoghar and was organised by the Indian Army together with the Deoghar district administration. It served ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their dependents from across the Santhal Pargana region, which is why the venue was placed there rather than in the State capital. Option A names Ranchi, the capital of Jharkhand, which is not where this mela was held. Option C names Dumka, another town of the Santhal Pargana region, but the event was not located there. Option D names Bokaro, an industrial centre of the State, which also does not match. Candidates should fix the pairing of the mela with Deoghar, and remember that the Vice-President, C. P. Radhakrishnan, is a former Governor of Jharkhand.

Q2.DefenceMedium

What does the theme of the mela, Sadaiv Aapke Saath, mean, and for whom was the event organised?

  1. A.Always with You; for ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their dependents
  2. B.Service before Self; for serving soldiers on the border
  3. C.Always Ready; for cadets of the National Cadet Corps
  4. D.Nation First; for families of serving officers only
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Always with You; for ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their dependents

Explanation

The correct answer is Always with You; for ex-servicemen, Veer Naris and their dependents. Sadaiv Aapke Saath translates as Always with You, and the Vice-President asked that it become a continuing national commitment rather than the slogan of one event. The mela itself was arranged to deliver welfare services and grievance redressal to ex-servicemen, to Veer Naris and to their dependents in the Santhal Pargana region. Option B gives a different motto and limits the beneficiaries to serving soldiers, which is not the case here. Option C misreads the theme and narrows it to NCC cadets, although NCC activities were only one of the stalls at the venue. Option D again gives a wrong meaning and wrongly restricts the event to families of serving officers.

Q3.DefenceMedium

Which health scheme for veterans was among the services offered at the stalls of the mela?

  1. A.Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission
  2. B.Central Government Health Scheme
  3. C.Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme
  4. D.Employees' State Insurance Scheme
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme

Explanation

The correct answer is the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme, known by its short form ECHS. Its services were set up at the mela along with displays of weapons and military equipment, disaster relief facilities, medical screening and blood donation camps, women's health awareness work, NCC activities and pension-related counters. The Vice-President praised this single-window arrangement, under which pension assistance, medical facilities, documentation and grievance redressal came together on one platform, and he described it as a meaningful example of last-mile delivery. Option A is a digital health records mission and not a veterans' scheme. Option B serves central government employees and pensioners, not ex-servicemen specifically. Option D covers organised sector workers through insurance contributions. Only ECHS is the health scheme meant for ex-servicemen and their dependents.

Q4.DefenceMedium

The Vice-President paid tribute at the event to which Param Vir Chakra awardee?

  1. A.Lance Naik Albert Ekka
  2. B.Captain Vikram Batra
  3. C.Subedar Joginder Singh
  4. D.Major Somnath Sharma
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Lance Naik Albert Ekka

Explanation

The correct answer is Lance Naik Albert Ekka. While recalling his tenure as Governor of Jharkhand and speaking of the State's proud tradition of military service and sacrifice, the Vice-President paid tribute to this Param Vir Chakra awardee, and in the same breath recalled the tribal freedom fighters of the region, among them Bhagwan Birsa Munda, Tilka Manjhi, Sidhu and Kanhu, and Nilambar and Pitambar. He said the spirit of patriotism and national service continues to inspire the people of Jharkhand. Options B, C and D name other recipients of the Param Vir Chakra, all of them well known, but none of them was the awardee honoured in this address. The connection to hold on to is Jharkhand with Albert Ekka, which is a frequent pairing in examination questions on gallantry awards.
