Why in News

On 2 October 2026 the Ministry of Mines announced the successful auction of two limestone blocks in Anantnag district of Jammu & Kashmir, a historic first that begins organised mineral development in the Union Territory.

Organised mineral development has begun in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir for the first time. On 2 October 2026 the Ministry of Mines announced that two mineral blocks in the Union Territory had been auctioned successfully under the Central Government's mineral auction process. Both blocks are limestone blocks, and both lie in Anantnag district.

Who conducted the auction

The Government of Jammu & Kashmir had handed the auction of its mineral blocks to the Ministry of Mines, Government of India, which ran the process. The ministry describes the exercise as a transparent and competitive one, and says the auction is a first step towards unlocking the mineral potential of the Union Territory. It comes as the Union Territory draws greater attention for infrastructure, investment and economic development after the abrogation of Article 370.

The two blocks

BlockAreaEstimated limestoneExploration stage
Koot–Kapran Limestone Block, Anantnag22.43 hectares4.75 million tonnesG-4
Wantrag Limestone Block, Anantnag5.36 hectares10.853 million tonnesG-3, with 159 metres of drilling

The Koot–Kapran block sits in Koot and Kapran villages of Dooru Tehsil in Anantnag district. It is the larger of the two by area but the smaller by estimated resource, and having been explored only to the G-4 stage it leaves room for more detailed work. The Wantrag block is the smaller holding, yet its estimated limestone resource is more than twice as large, and it has been taken further, to the G-3 stage, on the strength of drilling.

What the auction is expected to bring

The ministry expects the two limestone blocks to draw fresh investment and economic activity into the Union Territory. As mining and the work around it grows, it should generate direct and indirect employment and open avenues for local businesses, entrepreneurs, service providers and allied industries. The ministry calls this a step towards a Viksit Jammu & Kashmir, and says it will keep working with the Union Territory government on responsible development of mineral resources.

Carry the figures too: 22.43 hectares with 4.75 million tonnes at G-4, and 5.36 hectares with 10.853 million tonnes at G-3. The Ministry of Mines conducted the auction.

Practice Questions

Q1.State NewsEasy

Which mineral do the two blocks auctioned for the first time in Jammu & Kashmir contain?

  1. A.Bauxite
  2. B.Limestone
  3. C.Iron ore
  4. D.Manganese ore
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Limestone

Explanation

The correct answer is limestone. Both the blocks auctioned in the Union Territory are limestone blocks, named the Koot-Kapran Limestone Block and the Wantrag Limestone Block, and both lie in Anantnag district. Option A, bauxite, is wrong because no bauxite block figures in this auction; bauxite is associated with other states and not with these two blocks. Option C, iron ore, is wrong for the same reason, as the resource estimates announced here are limestone estimates. Option D, manganese ore, is wrong as well, since neither block was put up as a manganese holding. Aspirants should tie the mineral to the place, because questions on a first-ever auction usually ask for the mineral and the district together: limestone, Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir.

Q2.State NewsMedium

Both mineral blocks auctioned in Jammu & Kashmir are located in which district?

  1. A.Baramulla
  2. B.Udhampur
  3. C.Anantnag
  4. D.Kathua
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Anantnag

Explanation

The correct answer is Anantnag. Both the Koot-Kapran Limestone Block and the Wantrag Limestone Block lie in Anantnag district of the Union Territory, and the first of them is located more precisely in Koot and Kapran villages of Dooru Tehsil. Option A, Baramulla, is wrong because no block in this auction is placed there. Option B, Udhampur, is wrong for the same reason, and it has been offered because it is a familiar district name from the Jammu region. Option D, Kathua, is wrong as well, since neither of the auctioned holdings falls in that district. The district is the detail a paper setter is most likely to combine with the mineral, so remember the pair together, along with the tehsil name Dooru for the Koot-Kapran block.

Q3.State NewsHard

What is the estimated limestone resource of the Wantrag Limestone Block in Jammu & Kashmir?

  1. A.4.75 million tonnes
  2. B.7.21 million tonnes
  3. C.10.853 million tonnes
  4. D.15.40 million tonnes
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 10.853 million tonnes

Explanation

The correct answer is 10.853 million tonnes. The Wantrag Limestone Block covers 5.36 hectares and carries that estimated limestone resource, and it has been explored up to the G-3 stage, a stage reached with 159 metres of drilling. Option A is wrong because that figure belongs to the other block in the same auction, the Koot-Kapran Limestone Block, which spreads over 22.43 hectares; swapping the two estimates is the commonest error on this question. Option B is wrong because no such estimate was announced for either holding. Option D is wrong for the same reason, the figure being larger than anything reported here. Note the contrast worth remembering: Wantrag is the smaller block by area but the richer one by estimated resource.

Q4.State NewsMedium

Which body conducted the first-ever auction of mineral blocks in the Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir?

  1. A.Ministry of Mines, Government of India
  2. B.Geological Survey of India
  3. C.NITI Aayog
  4. D.Indian Bureau of Mines
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Ministry of Mines, Government of India

Explanation

The correct answer is the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The Government of Jammu & Kashmir entrusted the auction of its mineral blocks to the Ministry of Mines, which carried out the process under the Central Government mineral auction route and announced the successful result. Option B is wrong because the Geological Survey of India is not named as the body that ran this auction. Option C is wrong because NITI Aayog has no role in auctioning mineral blocks and is a policy institution. Option D is wrong because the Indian Bureau of Mines is not identified here as the auctioning authority either. The ministry has said it will continue to work with the Union Territory government on transparent and responsible development of its mineral resources.
