India Joins 14th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting in Manila
India took part in the 14th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting and the 23rd ASEAN-India consultation at Manila, with trade at USD 128.38 billion.

Why in News
India took part in the 14th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting and the 23rd ASEAN-India Economic Ministers Consultation at Manila, where the AITIGA review was discussed and India-ASEAN trade of USD 128.38 billion in 2025-26 was noted.
An Indian delegation led by Shri Nitin Kumar Yadav, Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce, attended the 14th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting (EAS-EMM) and the 23rd ASEAN-India Economic Ministers Consultation held at Manila in the Philippines.
Who took part
Economic ministers or their representatives from all eleven ASEAN members attended, namely Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam. They were joined by the East Asia Summit partners, among them India, Australia, China, Japan, New Zealand, Korea, Russia and the United States.
What was discussed
The sessions allowed an exchange of views on where the regional and world economy stands. The ASEAN Secretariat briefed the meeting on the outlook for 2027 and on what it could mean for trade and investment flows. The Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia, known as ERIA, tabled a paper on powering the region's next wave of growth, which argued for tying energy infrastructure, digital and industrial demand and consistent trade and investment policy into a single approach to energy security and industrial clusters.
The AITIGA review
At the consultation with ASEAN, India underlined that it wants regional trade agreements to work for both sides. Much of the talk turned on the continuing review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement (AITIGA), which seeks to lift trade flows and correct the imbalances that have built up. India repeated that the review should leave the agreement balanced, more effective, user friendly and easier for business to use.
Trade numbers
Two way trade between India and the ASEAN bloc touched USD 128.38 billion in 2025-26, and the bloc accounted for 10.55 per cent of total Indian trade with the world, which shows how much weight the partnership carries. On the margins of the meetings the delegation met Indian businesses working in the Philippines on 22 September 2026 to hear their export problems, and also joined the ASEAN-India Business Forum 2026 held on 23 September 2026.

Practice Questions
Where were the 14th East Asia Summit Economic Ministers Meeting and the 23rd ASEAN-India Economic Ministers Consultation held?
- A.Jakarta, Indonesia
- B.Manila, Philippines
- C.Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
- D.Hanoi, Vietnam
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Manila, Philippines
Explanation
The correct answer is Manila in the Philippines. The Indian delegation, led by Additional Secretary in the Department of Commerce Shri Nitin Kumar Yadav, travelled to Manila for both meetings, and it was there that economic ministers or their representatives from every ASEAN member met the East Asia Summit partners. Option A is wrong although Jakarta houses the ASEAN Secretariat, which briefed the meeting on the economic outlook; hosting the Secretariat is not the same as hosting this round of meetings. Option C is wrong because Kuala Lumpur, a frequent venue for regional gatherings, was not the host this time. Option D is wrong because Vietnam took part as an ASEAN member but did not host. Candidates should also recall that the delegation met Indian businesses in the Philippines and attended the ASEAN-India Business Forum during the same visit.
What was the value of India-ASEAN bilateral trade in 2025-26, as stated at the consultation?
- A.USD 98.24 billion
- B.USD 110.60 billion
- C.USD 128.38 billion
- D.USD 152.75 billion
Show answer
Correct answer: C. USD 128.38 billion
Explanation
The correct answer is USD 128.38 billion. The release states that bilateral trade between India and the ASEAN bloc reached this level in 2025-26, and that the bloc made up 10.55 per cent of total Indian trade with the world. The other three figures are close enough to look believable but none of them appears in the announcement, and choosing them would misstate the size of a partnership that India describes as one of its most important. Option A understates the trade, option B is also below the stated figure and option D overstates it. The number matters because it was cited in the same breath as the review of the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, which India wants to make balanced, effective and trade facilitative so that these flows can grow further in the years ahead.
Which agreement between India and ASEAN is currently under review, as discussed at the Manila consultation?
- A.ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement
- B.Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership
- C.Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement with Singapore
- D.India-Japan Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement
Show answer
Correct answer: A. ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement
Explanation
The correct answer is the ASEAN-India Trade in Goods Agreement, usually shortened to AITIGA. Its ongoing review was the main subject at the consultation, with the stated aim of raising trade flows and correcting the asymmetries that have grown within the pact. India said it wants the outcome to be mutually beneficial and to leave the agreement balanced, more effective, user friendly and easier for firms to work with. Option B is wrong because India is not part of the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and that pact was not the subject here. Option C is wrong because the agreement with Singapore is a separate bilateral arrangement rather than a bloc wide one. Option D is wrong because the partnership agreement with Japan, though an East Asia Summit partner is involved, has no bearing on this ASEAN review.
