IBCA and ADB signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the event. It covers landscape conservation, sustainable development, capacity building, knowledge exchange and nature-positive financing. ADB's Country Director for India, Mia Oka, noted that 2026 marks 40 years of the bank's partnership with India.

What the Minister said

Shri Yadav said the survival of tigers is tied to the health of forests, grasslands, rivers, prey species, wildlife corridors and local communities. He described tiger landscapes as natural capital that supplies water security, carbon sequestration, climate regulation, biodiversity conservation and livelihood support. His argument was that conservation must move past a focus on single species towards integrated landscape management.

His central line was that conservation with harmony and human-nature coexistence should be the foundation of ecological conservation. He linked land conservation to food quality, and pointed to desertification, falling soil moisture and declining soil quality as the wider setting. He asked participants to codify traditional knowledge and write that wisdom into policy, and said IBCA should lead in bringing the native wisdom of the Global South into conservation policy.

Who took part

Also on the dais were Secretary (EFCC) Tanmay Kumar, Director General (Forests) and Special Secretary Sushil Kumar Awasthi, and IBCA Director General S. P. Yadav. Experts and government representatives came from Bangladesh, Bhutan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Nepal and Vietnam, alongside state forest departments and tiger reserves. IBCA itself is a global platform for cooperation on the conservation of the seven big cat species.

Practice Questions

Q1.EnvironmentMedium

Which two organisations signed a Memorandum of Understanding at the international workshop on tiger landscapes?

  1. A.IBCA and the World Bank
  2. B.IBCA and the Asian Development Bank
  3. C.NTCA and the World Wide Fund for Nature
  4. D.NTCA and the Asian Development Bank
Show answer

Correct answer: B. IBCA and the Asian Development Bank

Explanation

The correct answer is IBCA and the Asian Development Bank. The two formalised their partnership through an MoU at the event, marking a step towards stronger collaboration in landscape conservation, sustainable development, capacity building, knowledge exchange and nature-positive financing initiatives. Option A substitutes a different multilateral lender, which is a natural confusion, but the release names the Asian Development Bank throughout and its Country Director for India, Mia Oka, spoke at the session. Options C and D put the National Tiger Conservation Authority in place of IBCA; NTCA was one of the three joint organisers of the workshop along with IBCA and ADB, but it was not a party to the agreement. Keep the roles separate: three organisers, two signatories.

Q2.EnvironmentEasy

Who inaugurated the international workshop on tiger landscapes in New Delhi?

  1. A.The Prime Minister
  2. B.Bhupender Yadav, Union Environment Minister
  3. C.S. P. Yadav, Director General, IBCA
  4. D.Mia Oka, ADB Country Director for India
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Bhupender Yadav, Union Environment Minister

Explanation

The correct answer is Bhupender Yadav, Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change. He opened the two-day workshop and delivered the inaugural address, in which he said that conservation with harmony and human-nature coexistence should be the foundation of ecological conservation. Option C names the Director General of IBCA, who was among the dignitaries on the dais but did not inaugurate the workshop. Option D names the ADB Country Director for India, who spoke at the event and welcomed the IBCA-ADB partnership, but again did not inaugurate it. Option A is wrong, though the release does note the growing role of IBCA under the Prime Minister's vision, which is the detail that makes this distractor tempting. Other dignitaries on the dais included Secretary Tanmay Kumar and Sushil Kumar Awasthi.

Q3.EnvironmentMedium

The International Big Cat Alliance works for the conservation of how many big cat species?

  1. A.Four
  2. B.Five
  3. C.Seven
  4. D.Nine
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Seven

Explanation

The correct answer is seven. The release describes IBCA as a global platform for cooperation among countries and institutions working for the conservation of the seven big cat species, and notes its growing role under the vision of the Prime Minister. Options A, B and D are not supported by the release and are offered because candidates often recall that the alliance covers several species without fixing the number. Along with the count, remember the framing the workshop used: tiger landscapes were discussed as natural capital, valued for ecosystem services such as water security, carbon sequestration, climate regulation, biodiversity conservation and livelihood support, with conservation, bioeconomy and ecotourism treated as drivers of sustainable livelihoods and long-term ecological security. The alliance was also urged at the workshop to lead in gathering the native wisdom of the Global South for conservation policy.

Q4.EnvironmentMedium

According to the ADB Country Director, the year 2026 marks how many years of ADB's partnership with India?

  1. A.25 years
  2. B.30 years
  3. C.40 years
  4. D.50 years
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 40 years

Explanation

The correct answer is 40 years. Mia Oka, the Asian Development Bank's Country Director for India, said while welcoming the partnership with IBCA that 2026 marks the completion of forty years of ADB's partnership with India. She added that India brings a wide experience of ecological conservation and sustainable socio-economic development that it can share with the big cat range countries, and that ADB would help bring those countries together and create sustainable financing opportunities for ecological conservation. Options A, B and D are round figures that do not appear in the release. This anniversary is worth remembering alongside the MoU signed at the same event, since questions often pair an agreement with the milestone announced beside it, and the two were reported together in the same release.
