India Tops World in Green Hydrogen Offtake Commitments
Indian companies have signed green hydrogen offtake commitments of 5,55,610 MTPA till October 2026, the world's largest, needing about Rs 90,000 crore of capital.

Why in News
On 29 October 2026 the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy announced that green hydrogen offtake commitments signed by Indian companies had reached 5,55,610 MTPA, the largest in the world, with 18 of the 23 contracts concluded during 2026 itself.
India has become the world's biggest source of committed green hydrogen supply, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy said on 29 October 2026. Firm contracts held by Indian producers now add up to 5,55,610 tonnes per annum (MTPA) of green hydrogen equivalent, a volume no other country has matched.
How the order book grew
Counting from the start of the National Green Hydrogen Mission in 2023, Indian firms have closed 23 supply contracts. Of these, 18 were struck during 2026 alone and cover more than 4 lakh MTPA between them. Exports take up over 70 per cent of the promised quantity, the buyers lying mainly in Europe and Japan, where Indian suppliers are quoting the most competitive rates in the world for green ammonia and green methanol. Honouring every contract will call for capital of roughly Rs 90,000 crore, or about USD 9.5 billion.
The biggest deals
- ACME Group will send 4,88,000 MTPA of green ammonia to IHI of Japan, the largest single contract, and 1,00,000 MTPA of green methanol to Mitsubishi Gas Chemical.
- Reliance Industries holds a long-term supply and purchase agreement with Samsung C&T of South Korea worth more than USD 3 billion, among the biggest such deals anywhere, with shipments due to begin by 2028.
- L&T and ITOCHU have floated a special purpose vehicle for 3,00,000 TPA of green ammonia, deliveries starting December 2029.
- AM Green took the Asian lot of the H2Global auction run by HINT.CO GmbH and will sell Germany ammonia worth at least EUR 585 million over ten years, the first consignments expected in 2029; it has separate contracts with Uniper for 2,50,000 MTPA and with Japan's power producer JERA for 70,000 MTPA.
- Agastya is arranging 2,50,000 MTPA of green methanol for SAR in Sri Lanka, and Jouno Joules has tied up 600 TPD, about 2,19,000 MTPA, with Select Energy GmbH.
Demand created at home
The mission's SIGHT programme, short for Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition, has placed 6,70,000 MTPA of green ammonia with 11 fertiliser units spread across the country. A further 30,000 MTPA of green hydrogen has been awarded for the refineries of IOCL, BPCL, HPCL and NRL. Green ammonia is also being taken up as a clean bunkering fuel for shipping and burnt alongside coal in thermal stations to bring down carbon output, while hydrogen derivatives are entering fertiliser making and refining worldwide.
What the mission itself promises
The Cabinet cleared the National Green Hydrogen Mission with an initial outlay of Rs 19,744 crore running to 2029-30. By 2030 it looks for output of at least 5 million tonnes a year, 125 GW of fresh renewable capacity, investment above Rs 8 lakh crore, more than 6 lakh full-time jobs and 50 MMT a year of carbon dioxide kept out of the air. The commitments announced now equal roughly 11 per cent of that production target.

Exam Point of View
Remember the headline volume (5,55,610 MTPA, about 11 per cent of the mission target), the contract count (23 since 2023, of which 18 in 2026), the export share (over 70 per cent), the capital needed (Rs 90,000 crore or USD 9.5 billion), the mission's outlay (Rs 19,744 crore to 2029-30) and its 2030 targets, and pair each foreign buyer with its Indian supplier.
