Why in News

The Status Report on Ayush Related Inventions in India (2014-2026), released during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations, records 4,077 Ayush patent applications and 711 patents granted between 2014-15 and 2025-26.

A new government study has measured how quickly patent activity has grown around India's Ayush systems of medicine. The Status Report on Ayush Related Inventions in India (2014-2026) was brought out during the celebrations of the 11th Ayurveda Day. It counts 4,077 patent applications filed and 711 patents granted over twelve financial years, from 2014-15 to 2025-26.

Who prepared it

The report comes from the Office of the Controller General of Patents, Designs and Trade Marks (CGPDTM), which sits under the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It sets out, year by year, how inventions linked to Ayush have entered the formal intellectual property system.

The climb in filings

Yearly filings stood at just 63 applications in 2014-15. By 2025-26 the annual figure had reached 590, a rise of roughly 836.5 per cent. The line was not straight. Filings touched their highest point at 606 applications in 2022-23, fell sharply to 299 in 2023-24, and then recovered to 590. Grants moved the same way, from 3 in 2015-16 to 204 in 2023-24.

Most of it is recent

The years after the pandemic carry the bulk of the activity. Between 2020-21 and 2025-26 the office received 2,854 applications, which is 70 per cent of everything filed in the twelve years. The first six years, 2014-15 to 2019-20, accounted for 1,223 applications. Grants are bunched even more tightly in the later stretch: 657 patents, or 92.4 per cent of every grant made, were awarded then.

Maharashtra stands ahead of every other state in this field, with 744 filings and 142 grants to its name.

What was said

Shri Prataprao Jadhav, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Ayush and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, said the numbers show a sharper focus on research and intellectual property in the sector, and that the aim is an ecosystem where traditional knowledge and present-day science together produce new products while India's own knowledge systems stay protected. Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary in the Ministry of Ayush, said the widening pool of applicants, from universities and research bodies to startups and industry, was encouraging, and that the ministry would keep supporting evidence generation and research partnerships.
