First Kanda Express Takes 440 MT Onions to Agartala
The first-ever Kanda Express carrying about 440 MT of buffer onions is due to reach Agartala in Tripura by 18 October 2026 from the PSF buffer.

Why in News
On 16 October 2026 the Department of Consumer Affairs announced the first-ever Kanda Express movement of buffer onions to Agartala in Tripura, carrying about 440 MT and due to arrive by 18 October 2026.
The Department of Consumer Affairs has sent the first Kanda Express consignment of onions to Agartala in Tripura, widening the government's effort to keep onions available and affordable in the North-East before the festive weeks. The rake carries about 440 MT of onions and is expected to reach Agartala by 18 October 2026.
What the Kanda Express is
The onions move out of the buffer stock built under the Price Stabilization Fund (PSF), which the government uses to steady the price of essential items by releasing stock when supply tightens. The rail service carrying them has been named the Kanda Express, kanda being the common word for onion in western India. An earlier Kanda Express had already taken buffer onions to Assam; Agartala is the first destination in Tripura.
How much has moved so far
| Mode | Quantity |
| First Kanda Express rake | 840 MT |
| Second Kanda Express rake | 452 MT |
| 44 truck consignments | 1,513.46 MT |
Together the two rail rakes and the road consignments have carried more than 2,800 MT of buffer onions into the region. The supplies have reached points in Assam, Tripura and Nagaland, among them Kamrup, Guwahati, Gomati, Dimapur, Sepahijala, Kohima, Niuland and Chumoukedima.
Reach inside Tripura
The Agartala consignment is meant to cover seven of Tripura's eight districts: Dhalai, South Tripura, Khowai, Unakoti, West Tripura, Gomati and Sepahijala. Mixing rail with road movement is intended to push buffer stock deeper into consumption centres rather than leave it at a few large markets.
Prices are easing
Fresh kharif arrivals have begun to reach the mandis, and wholesale rates have softened as a result. The all-India average mandi price came down from a September peak of roughly Rs 3,600 per quintal to about Rs 3,300 per quintal in October. In retail, 211 cities have reported a fall of Rs 1 to Rs 13 a kilogram over the past fortnight, across states and union territories that include Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Odisha, Punjab, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Uttar Pradesh and West Bengal. In Assam about 12 centres recorded a decline of Rs 1 to Rs 8 a kilogram.
The North-East gap has narrowed
The release also shows how the region's price disadvantage has shrunk. Two years ago the average retail price in Assam was Rs 61.96 a kilogram against an all-India average of Rs 54.13, a gap of Rs 7.83. At present Assam averages Rs 54.30 a kilogram while the all-India figure is Rs 53.07, leaving a difference of only Rs 1.23. Retail onion prices in the state are now broadly in line with the national average.
What happens next
The department has said it will keep watching prices, market arrivals and supply conditions, and that further releases from the PSF buffer will be made as market conditions require, so that availability holds up and sharp price swings are blunted.
