RRB NTPC GK Questions 2026

Static General Knowledge makes up the rest of the General Awareness section in RRB NTPC, and the notices name its topics: General Science and Life Science up to Class 10, History of India and the freedom struggle, Physical, Social and Economic Geography of India and the world, Indian Polity and Governance, Indian Economy, Art and Culture, Indian Literature, Monuments and Places, Flora and Fauna, Famous Personalities, the UN and other world organisations, environmental issues, Transport Systems in India, Important Government and Public Sector Organisations, Common Abbreviations, and Basics of Computers and Computer Applications. RRB frames these as short factual questions: the unit of a physical quantity, the year of a battle, the article of the Constitution, the river a city stands on, the full form of an abbreviation, the headquarters of an organisation. GK24's GK notes on this page cover each topic in English and Hindi, arranged the way the syllabus lists them, with the facts RRB tends to ask placed first. Work through one topic at a time, note the lists (national parks, dances, articles, schedules, awards), and pair each topic with its quiz on GK24 to check what has stayed with you.

Q161.Indian PolityAsked in: RRB NTPC · 16 Jun 2022, Shift 2 (CBT 2, Level 2)Medium

Financial emergency can be declared under __________ of the Constitution of India.

  1. A.Article 356
  2. B.Article 359
  3. C.Article 360
  4. D.Article 352
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Article 360

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Article 360. Article 360 lets the President proclaim a financial emergency when the financial stability or credit of India, or of any part of it, is threatened. Such a proclamation must be approved by both Houses of Parliament within two months, after which it continues indefinitely until revoked; there is no maximum period. During it the Union can direct states to follow canons of financial propriety, and salaries of government servants, including Supreme Court and High Court judges, can be reduced. No financial emergency has ever been declared in India, though it was discussed during the 1991 crisis. D is wrong because Article 352 is the national emergency on grounds of war, external aggression or armed rebellion, imposed in 1962, 1971 and 1975. A is wrong because Article 356 is President's rule, imposed when a state's constitutional machinery fails. B is wrong because Article 359 only suspends the enforcement of fundamental rights during a national emergency. Exam tip: 352 national, 356 state, 360 financial; only 360 has never been used.

Q162.General ScienceAsked in: RRB NTPC · 16 Jun 2022, Shift 1 (CBT 2, Level 2)Medium

Water has the highest density at nearly ______ Kelvin.

  1. A.0
  2. B.227
  3. C.277
  4. D.273
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 277

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 277. Water is densest at about 4 degrees Celsius, and 4 plus 273 gives roughly 277 kelvin. Most liquids keep shrinking as they cool, but water behaves oddly: below 4 degrees Celsius it starts to expand again because its molecules begin forming the open, hexagonal pattern of ice. This anomalous expansion is why ice is lighter than water and floats, and why a lake freezes from the top while the 4-degree water sinks to the bottom, letting fish survive the winter. Its density at that point is very close to 1 gram per cubic centimetre. D is wrong because 273 kelvin is 0 degrees Celsius, the freezing point, where water is already less dense than at 4 degrees. A is wrong because 0 kelvin is absolute zero, where no liquid water can exist. B is wrong because 227 kelvin is about minus 46 degrees Celsius, far below freezing. Exam tip: maximum density of water at 4 degrees Celsius equals 277 K; freezing at 273 K, boiling at 373 K.

The National Unity Day is celebrated in India on the birth anniversary of ________.

  1. A.Dr BR Ambedkar
  2. B.Indira Gandhi
  3. C.Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel
  4. D.Mother Teresa
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. National Unity Day, or Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, is observed on 31 October, the birth anniversary of Sardar Patel, who was born in 1875 at Nadiad, Gujarat. The day was started in 2014 to honour his role as the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister who brought more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union, earning him the title Iron Man of India. It is marked with a Run for Unity and a unity pledge, and on 31 October 2018 the 182-metre Statue of Unity was unveiled in his memory at Kevadia on the Narmada. A is wrong because Dr Ambedkar's birth anniversary, 14 April, is Ambedkar Jayanti. B is wrong because Indira Gandhi's birthday, 19 November, is observed as National Integration Day. D is wrong because Mother Teresa was born on 26 August, which is not a national day. Exam tip: 31 October means Sardar Patel, National Unity Day and the Statue of Unity.

Who among the following denounced the injustice of the caste system and founded the Satyashodhak Samaj (Truth Seekers Society)?

  1. A.Savitri Bai Phule
  2. B.EV Ramasamy Naicker
  3. C.Ayyankali
  4. D.Jyotirao Govindrao Phule
Show answer

Correct answer: D. Jyotirao Govindrao Phule

Explanation

The correct answer is D, Jyotirao Govindrao Phule. Jyotiba Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj at Pune on 24 September 1873 to fight caste discrimination and the hold of priests over society. The same year he published Gulamgiri (Slavery), attacking Brahmanical domination, and earlier, in 1848, he and his wife Savitribai had opened one of the first schools for girls in Pune. The Samaj promoted education for Shudras, Dalits and women, marriages without priests, and equality; Phule was given the title Mahatma in 1888, and Dr Ambedkar counted him among his three gurus. A is wrong because Savitribai Phule, though a pioneer of women's education and a member of the Samaj, was not its founder. B is wrong because E. V. Ramasamy Periyar led the Self-Respect Movement in Tamil Nadu from 1925. C is wrong because Ayyankali was a Dalit reformer of Kerala who set up the Sadhu Jana Paripalana Sangham in 1907. Exam tip: Satyashodhak Samaj, Pune, 1873, Jyotiba Phule, book Gulamgiri.

Which Amendment to the Constitution of India removed the 'Right to property' from the Fundamental Rights?

  1. A.46th Constitutional Amendment 1980
  2. B.44th Constitutional Amendment 1978
  3. C.42nd Constitutional Amendment 1976
  4. D.48th Constitutional Amendment 1981
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 44th Constitutional Amendment 1978

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 44th Constitutional Amendment 1978. The 44th Amendment, passed by the Janata Party government of Morarji Desai, took the right to property out of Part III of the Constitution. It deleted Article 19(1)(f) and Article 31, which had guaranteed the right to acquire, hold and dispose of property, and put in their place Article 300A, which says no person shall be deprived of property except by authority of law. Property thus became a legal or constitutional right, not a fundamental one, from 20 June 1979, so a citizen can no longer go straight to the Supreme Court under Article 32 for it. C is wrong because the 42nd Amendment of 1976 added the words Socialist, Secular and Integrity and the Fundamental Duties; it did not remove property. A is wrong because the 46th Amendment (actually of 1982) dealt with sales tax on goods. D is wrong because the 48th Amendment (1984) extended President's rule in Punjab. Exam tip: 42nd added Fundamental Duties, 44th removed the fundamental right to property (now Article 300A).

Kalhana's Rajatarangini in Sanskrit language covers the history of kings who ruled over _____.

  1. A.Bengal
  2. B.Bihar
  3. C.Kashmir
  4. D.Delhi
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Kashmir

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Kashmir. Rajatarangini, meaning the river of kings, is a Sanskrit verse chronicle of the rulers of Kashmir written by Kalhana around 1148–1150 CE. It runs to about 8,000 verses arranged in eight books called tarangas, or waves, and traces Kashmir's kings from legendary times down to Kalhana's own day in the reign of Jayasimha. Because Kalhana used inscriptions, coins, older records and his own judgement, it is often called the first real work of history written in India. Later authors Jonaraja, Srivara and Prajyabhatta continued the story into the Mughal period. A is wrong because Bengal's rulers are recorded in works like Ramacharita of Sandhyakara Nandi, not in Rajatarangini. B is wrong because Bihar was the seat of Magadha and the Palas, who are not the book's subject. D is wrong because the Delhi Sultans are covered by Persian chronicles such as Tabaqat-i-Nasiri. Exam tip: Kalhana, Rajatarangini, Kashmir, 12th century, eight tarangas.

Goa became India's 25th state on _________________.

  1. A.30 May 1990
  2. B.30 May 1986
  3. C.30 May 1987
  4. D.30 May 1988
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 30 May 1987

Explanation

The correct answer is C, 30 May 1987. Goa became a full state on 30 May 1987 through the Constitution (56th Amendment) Act and the Goa, Daman and Diu Reorganisation Act, and the day is celebrated every year as Goa Statehood Day. Goa had been freed from Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961 in Operation Vijay and was then run as the Union Territory of Goa, Daman and Diu. In 1987 Goa was separated and raised to statehood, while Daman and Diu stayed a union territory; Konkani was made the official language and Panaji the capital. Earlier the same year, on 20 February 1987, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh had become the 23rd and 24th states, so Goa took the 25th place. B is wrong because in 1986 Goa was still a union territory. D and A are wrong because by 1988 and 1990 Goa had already been a state for one and three years. Exam tip: liberated 1961, state 30 May 1987, 25th state after Mizoram (23rd) and Arunachal Pradesh (24th).

Which of the following is an element with atomic number 30 as per the modern periodic table?

  1. A.Ni
  2. B.Fe
  3. C.Zn
  4. D.Co
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Zn

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Zn. Zinc has atomic number 30, meaning every zinc atom has 30 protons in its nucleus. It is the last element of the first transition series in period 4 of the modern periodic table, with the electronic configuration [Ar] 3d10 4s2, and it is placed in group 12. Zinc is a bluish-white metal used to galvanise iron against rust, to make brass with copper, and in dry cells. All four options are neighbours in the same period, which is why paper setters like this question: iron is 26, cobalt 27, nickel 28, copper 29 and zinc 30. A is wrong because Ni, nickel, has atomic number 28. B is wrong because Fe, iron, has atomic number 26. D is wrong because Co, cobalt, has atomic number 27. Exam tip: remember the run Fe 26, Co 27, Ni 28, Cu 29, Zn 30.

Majuli, the largest riverine island in the world, is associated with which of the following rivers?

  1. A.Brahmaputra
  2. B.Ganga
  3. C.Indus
  4. D.Godavari
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Brahmaputra

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Brahmaputra. Majuli lies in the Brahmaputra river in Assam, near Jorhat, and is the largest river island in the world. In 2016 it became India's first island district. It is the heart of Assam's neo-Vaishnavite culture: the saint Srimanta Sankardeva and his disciple Madhavdeva set up satras (monasteries) there in the 15th and 16th centuries, and the island is famous for its mask-making and the Raas festival. Every monsoon the Brahmaputra eats away its banks, so Majuli has shrunk from over 1,200 square km to less than half of that, making erosion its biggest worry. B is wrong because the Ganga has no comparable island; its delta islands such as Sagar belong to the Sundarbans. C is wrong because the Indus flows mainly through Pakistan and has no such island. D is wrong because the Godavari's Konaseema is a delta region, not a single river island. Exam tip: Majuli equals Brahmaputra equals Assam, first island district of India (2016).

Which of the following devices is used to measure relatively high temperatures, such as encountered in furnaces?

  1. A.Bolometer
  2. B.Pyrometer
  3. C.Ammeter
  4. D.Fluxmeter
Show answer

Correct answer: B. Pyrometer

Explanation

The correct answer is B, Pyrometer. A pyrometer measures very high temperatures, such as those of furnaces, kilns and molten metal, without touching the hot object. It works on the principle that every hot body gives off thermal radiation whose intensity and colour depend on its temperature; the instrument reads this radiation and converts it into a temperature value. Ordinary mercury thermometers stop at about 350 degrees Celsius, so steel plants, glass works and cement kilns rely on pyrometers, which can read well above 1,000 degrees Celsius. The word comes from the Greek pyro, meaning fire. A is wrong because a bolometer measures the power of incident electromagnetic radiation, such as infrared or microwaves, not furnace temperature. C is wrong because an ammeter measures electric current in amperes. D is wrong because a fluxmeter measures magnetic flux. Exam tip: pyrometer for furnace heat, thermometer for body heat, ammeter for current, fluxmeter for magnetism.

The quartzite is a ________ type of rock.

  1. A.igneous
  2. B.basalt
  3. C.sedimentary
  4. D.metamorphic
Show answer

Correct answer: D. metamorphic

Explanation

The correct answer is D, metamorphic. Quartzite is formed when sandstone, a sedimentary rock, is changed by great heat and pressure deep inside the earth. The quartz grains of the sandstone recrystallise and fuse, so quartzite becomes one of the hardest and most weather-resistant rocks, which is why the ridges of the Aravalli range and the Delhi Ridge, made largely of quartzite, have survived for hundreds of millions of years. Such change of an existing rock without melting is called metamorphism. A is wrong because igneous rocks such as granite and basalt form from cooled magma or lava, not from an older rock under pressure. B is wrong because basalt is itself a specific igneous rock, not a class of rock. C is wrong because sedimentary is the parent type; sandstone is sedimentary, but once transformed it is no longer classed that way. Exam tip: sandstone becomes quartzite, limestone becomes marble, shale becomes slate, granite becomes gneiss.

Which of the following is in the third trophic level of the food chain?

  1. A.Primary consumers
  2. B.Top consumers
  3. C.Secondary consumers
  4. D.Producers
Show answer

Correct answer: C. Secondary consumers

Explanation

The correct answer is C, Secondary consumers. In a food chain each step at which energy is transferred is a trophic level, and secondary consumers stand at the third step. The first trophic level is the producers, green plants that make food by photosynthesis; the second is the primary consumers, herbivores that eat plants; the third is the secondary consumers, carnivores that eat the herbivores; and the fourth is the tertiary or top consumers. In the chain grass, grasshopper, frog, snake, eagle, the frog is at the third level. Only about 10 percent of energy passes from one level to the next (Lindeman's ten percent law), so chains rarely go beyond four or five levels. A is wrong because primary consumers are the herbivores of the second level. B is wrong because top consumers sit at the fourth or final level. D is wrong because producers form the first level, the base of every chain. Exam tip: producers 1, herbivores 2, carnivores 3, top carnivores 4.

What was the main reason for calling off the Non-Cooperation Movement by Gandhiji in 1922?

  1. A.A police station at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh was set on fire by a mob
  2. B.Gandhiji was seriously ill
  3. C.The movement was completed by achieving the target
  4. D.Gandhiji was arrested and compelled to stop the movement
Show answer

Correct answer: A. A police station at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh was set on fire by a mob

Explanation

The correct answer is A, a police station at Chauri Chaura in Uttar Pradesh was set on fire by a mob. Gandhi withdrew the movement because it had turned violent, against his principle of non-violence. On 5 February 1922 at Chauri Chaura in Gorakhpur district, a crowd of protesters set fire to a police station after the police fired on them, and 22 policemen died. Gandhi called the incident a warning from God, went on a five-day fast, and the Congress Working Committee at Bardoli on 12 February 1922 suspended the movement that had been launched in 1920 on the Khilafat and Punjab wrongs. Leaders such as Motilal Nehru and C. R. Das disagreed and later formed the Swaraj Party. B is wrong because Gandhi was not ill; the decision was a moral one. C is wrong because Swaraj had not been achieved when the movement was stopped. D is wrong because Gandhi was arrested only in March 1922, after the movement had already been called off. Exam tip: Chauri Chaura 5 February 1922, Bardoli resolution 12 February 1922, Non-Cooperation ended.

In which country is the headquarters of Asian Development Bank (ADB) situated?

  1. A.Philippines
  2. B.South Korea
  3. C.China
  4. D.Japan
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Philippines

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Philippines. The Asian Development Bank has its headquarters in Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila, in the Philippines. It was set up in 1966 to fund development in Asia and the Pacific, and India was one of its founding members. Japan and the United States are its two largest shareholders, and by tradition its president has always been Japanese. The ADB lends for roads, power, water and urban projects, and India is among its biggest borrowers. B is wrong because South Korea hosts the Green Climate Fund at Songdo, not the ADB. C is wrong because China is the home of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (Beijing) and the New Development Bank of BRICS (Shanghai). D is wrong because Japan is only the largest shareholder; the bank was deliberately located in Manila rather than Tokyo. Exam tip: ADB in Manila (1966), AIIB in Beijing (2016), New Development Bank in Shanghai (2015).

Which temple in Thanjavur has chola architecture and was built by Emperor Rajaraja?

  1. A.Brihadisvara Temple
  2. B.Naganathaswamy Temple
  3. C.Thirumananjeri Temple
  4. D.Lord Murugan Temple
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Brihadisvara Temple

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Brihadisvara Temple. The Brihadisvara (Brihadeeswarar) Temple at Thanjavur was built by Rajaraja Chola I and completed around 1010 CE, which is why it is also called Rajarajeswaram or the Big Temple. It is the finest example of Dravidian temple architecture: a granite vimana about 66 metres high, a single-stone capstone said to weigh around 80 tonnes, and a huge monolithic Nandi facing the shrine of Shiva. Along with Gangaikonda Cholapuram and the Airavatesvara Temple at Darasuram, it forms the UNESCO World Heritage listing called the Great Living Chola Temples. B is wrong because the Naganathaswamy Temple is at Thirunageswaram near Kumbakonam and is famous as the Ketu shrine among the Navagraha temples. C is wrong because the Thirumananjeri Temple is a wedding-blessing shrine near Kumbakonam, not Rajaraja's temple. D is wrong because the Murugan temples such as Palani and Swamimalai are not Chola royal temples in Thanjavur. Exam tip: Rajaraja I built Thanjavur's Brihadisvara; his son Rajendra I built Gangaikonda Cholapuram.

When was Reserve Bank of India established?

  1. A.April 1948
  2. B.April 1935
  3. C.April 1945
  4. D.April 1936
Show answer

Correct answer: B. April 1935

Explanation

The correct answer is B, April 1935. The Reserve Bank of India started working on 1 April 1935 under the Reserve Bank of India Act, 1934, following the recommendation of the Hilton Young Commission of 1926. It began as a privately owned shareholders' bank with its central office in Calcutta, which moved permanently to Bombay (Mumbai) in 1937. Its first Governor was Sir Osborne Smith, and C. D. Deshmukh became the first Indian Governor in 1943. The bank was nationalised on 1 January 1949, after which it has been fully owned by the Government of India. A is wrong because nothing about the RBI's founding happened in April 1948; 1949 is the nationalisation year. C is wrong because April 1945 was still wartime and the bank had already existed for ten years. D is wrong because April 1936 is a year too late; the bank had already completed its first year. Exam tip: RBI Act 1934, RBI born 1 April 1935, nationalised 1 January 1949.

The Southernmost tip of Indian territory is ________

  1. A.Indira point
  2. B.Kanyakumari
  3. C.Karondi
  4. D.Cape Comorin
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Indira point

Explanation

The correct answer is A, Indira point. Indira Point on Great Nicobar Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the southernmost point of Indian territory, at about 6 degrees 45 minutes north latitude. It was earlier called Pygmalion Point and was renamed after Indira Gandhi in 1985. It lies only about 150 km from Indonesia's Sumatra, and its lighthouse area was partly submerged by the 2004 tsunami. The question asks about the whole territory, which includes the islands, so the mainland tip is not the answer. B is wrong because Kanyakumari is the southernmost point of the Indian mainland, not of the entire territory. D is wrong because Cape Comorin is simply the old English name of Kanyakumari, so it is the same mainland point. C is wrong because Karondi is not a recognised geographical extremity of India. Exam tip: southernmost point of India is Indira Point (Great Nicobar); southernmost point of the mainland is Kanyakumari (Cape Comorin).

How many non-permanent members does the UN Council have?

  1. A.15
  2. B.10
  3. C.12
  4. D.14
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 10

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 10. The UN Security Council has 15 members: 5 permanent members and 10 non-permanent members. The permanent five are the USA, the UK, France, Russia and China, and only they hold the veto. The 10 non-permanent members are elected by the General Assembly for two-year terms, five seats falling vacant every year, and a retiring member cannot be re-elected immediately. Seats are shared by region: five for Africa and Asia-Pacific, one for Eastern Europe, two for Latin America and the Caribbean, and two for Western Europe and others. India has served eight terms, the latest in 2021–22. A is wrong because 15 is the total strength of the Council, not the non-permanent count. C is wrong because 12 has never been the number of elected seats. D is wrong because 14 is also incorrect; before the 1965 enlargement there were only 6 non-permanent members. Exam tip: Security Council means 5 permanent plus 10 non-permanent equals 15, with two-year elected terms.

The first Amendment to the constitution of India was made on ________.

  1. A.1951
  2. B.1953
  3. C.1952
  4. D.1950
Show answer

Correct answer: A. 1951

Explanation

The correct answer is A, 1951. The Constitution (First Amendment) Act was passed by the provisional Parliament in June 1951, barely seventeen months after the Constitution came into force. Nehru's government brought it mainly to protect land-reform laws from court challenges and to allow reasonable restrictions on free speech. It added the Ninth Schedule along with Articles 31A and 31B, put new grounds such as public order in Article 19(2), and inserted Article 15(4) so the state could make special provisions for socially and educationally backward classes after the Champakam Dorairajan case. D is wrong because in 1950 the Constitution had only just come into force on 26 January and no amendment had been made. C is wrong because 1952 is the year of the first general elections and the first Lok Sabha. B is wrong because 1953 saw the creation of Andhra State, not the first amendment. Exam tip: Constitution enforced 1950, first amended 1951 (Ninth Schedule), first elections 1952.

Beriberi is a disease caused due to deficiency of ________

  1. A.vitamin B1
  2. B.vitamin A
  3. C.vitamin C
  4. D.vitamin D
Show answer

Correct answer: A. vitamin B1

Explanation

The correct answer is A, vitamin B1. Beriberi is caused by a lack of thiamine, which is vitamin B1. Thiamine helps the body turn carbohydrates into energy and keeps nerves and the heart working, so its shortage weakens muscles and nerves (dry beriberi) or causes swelling and heart failure (wet beriberi). The disease was common in Asia among people living mainly on polished white rice, because milling strips away the thiamine-rich outer layer of the grain; whole grains, pulses, nuts and eggs supply it. Vitamin B1 is water-soluble, so the body stores little of it and needs a regular intake. B is wrong because vitamin A deficiency causes night blindness and xerophthalmia. C is wrong because vitamin C deficiency causes scurvy, with bleeding gums. D is wrong because vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults. Exam tip: B1 beriberi, B3 pellagra, B12 pernicious anaemia, C scurvy, D rickets.
