RRB ALP GK Questions 2026

General Science is the knowledge section of RRB ALP under CEN 01/2026. The CEN defines it as Physics, Chemistry and Life Sciences of Class 10 level in CBT-1, and CBT-2 Part A adds Basic Science and Engineering: units and measurements, mass, weight and density, work, power and energy, speed and velocity, heat and temperature, basic electricity, levers and simple machines, engineering drawing, occupational safety and health, environment education and IT literacy. The notes on this page are GK24's topic-wise GK notes for RRB ALP, written as short facts, formulas and tables so that a topic can be revised in one sitting. Physics notes cover motion, force, gravitation, work and energy, sound, light, electricity and magnetism; Chemistry notes cover matter, atoms and molecules, chemical reactions, acids, bases and salts, metals and non-metals, carbon compounds and the periodic table; Life Sciences notes cover the cell, life processes, control and coordination, reproduction, heredity, diseases and the environment. Topics that appear in both CBT-1 General Science and CBT-2 Basic Science and Engineering, such as units, energy, heat and electricity, are marked so that one reading serves two papers. Each note ends with the previous-year questions asked on it, and the quizzes on this site draw from the same topics, so a weak quiz score points back to the note to reread.

Q581.General ScienceAsked in: RRB ALP · CBT-1, 31 Aug 2018, Shift 1Easy

Which part of the brain regulates breathing?

  1. A.Fore-brain
  2. B.Cerebellum
  3. C.Mid-brain
  4. D.Medulla
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Medulla

The medulla oblongata is the breathing centre of the brain, which is why we keep breathing even while asleep. It is the lowest part of the hindbrain and joins the brain to the spinal cord.

What is the molecular formula of washing soda?

  1. A.NaHCO₃
  2. B.Na₂CO₃·10H₂O
  3. C.Na₂CO₃
  4. D.NaCl
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Na₂CO₃·10H₂O

Washing soda is sodium carbonate decahydrate: each unit of sodium carbonate holds ten molecules of water of crystallisation. It is made from common salt in steps: baking soda is heated to get anhydrous sodium carbonate, called soda ash, which is then recrystallised from water to give washing soda crystals.

Why are danger signals typically red in colour?

  1. A.Red light has a longer wavelength and is scattered the least, making it visible from a distance.
  2. B.Red light is more reflective than other colours.
  3. C.Red light is easier to produce artificially.
  4. D.The colour red is aesthetically pleasing.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Red light has a longer wavelength and is scattered the least, making it visible from a distance.

Red has the longest wavelength in visible light, about 700 nm, so the tiny particles of air, fog, smoke and dust scatter it the least.

Q585.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · CBT-1, 16 Dec 2024, Shift 1Easy

Which of the following rules is used to determine the direction of the force on a current-carrying conductor in an electric motor?

  1. A.Ampere's Law
  2. B.Right-Hand Thumb Rule
  3. C.Fleming's Right-Hand Rule
  4. D.Fleming's Left-Hand Rule
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Fleming's Left-Hand Rule

It gives the direction of the force, and so of the motion, on a current-carrying conductor placed in a magnetic field, which is exactly what turns the coil of a motor.

Q586.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · CBT-1, 16 Dec 2024, Shift 1Easy

Which of the following reactions represents the combustion of methane?

  1. A.CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O
  2. B.CH₄ + Cl₂ → CH₃Cl + HCl
  3. C.CH₄ + O₂ → CO + H₂O
  4. D.CH₄ + H₂O → CO + H₂
Show answer
Correct answer: A. CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O

Combustion means burning in oxygen, and complete burning of methane gives carbon dioxide, water, heat and light. The equation is balanced: one carbon, four hydrogen and four oxygen atoms on each side.

Q589.General ScienceAsked in: RRB JE · CBT-1, 26 May 2019, Shift 2Easy

Which set of sign conventions is followed while dealing with reflection of light by spherical mirrors?

  1. A.System convention
  2. B.Sign convention
  3. C.Mirror convention
  4. D.New Cartesian sign convention
Show answer
Correct answer: D. New Cartesian sign convention

It is the standard set of rules used for reflection by spherical mirrors and for the mirror formula. Under this convention the pole of the mirror is the origin and the principal axis is the x-axis.

What is the unit of magnification?

  1. A.Dioptre
  2. B.Newton
  3. C.cm
  4. D.It has no unit
Show answer
Correct answer: D. It has no unit

Magnification is a ratio of two lengths, so the units cancel and it is a pure number. For a mirror or a lens, magnification m equals the height of the image divided by the height of the object (h′/h).

Match the following: (i) red cabbage leaves, (ii) methyl orange, (iii) onion, clove; with (a) olfactory indicator, (b) acid-base indicator, (c) natural acid-base indicator.

  1. A.(i) - (c), (ii) - (a), (iii) - (b)
  2. B.(i) - (a), (ii) - (c), (iii) - (b)
  3. C.(i) - (a), (ii) - (b), (iii) - (c)
  4. D.(i) - (c), (ii) - (b), (iii) - (a)
Show answer
Correct answer: D. (i) - (c), (ii) - (b), (iii) - (a)

Red cabbage is a natural acid-base indicator, methyl orange is a synthetic acid-base indicator, and onion and clove are olfactory indicators.

Which of the following options is NOT true of RBCs?

  1. A.Size - 7.5 μm
  2. B.Function - Transportation of oxygen and carbon dioxide
  3. C.RBCs count can be determined by an instrument called haemocytometer
  4. D.Shape - Amoeboid or circular
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Shape - Amoeboid or circular

A red blood cell is a biconcave disc, thin in the middle and thick at the edge, not an amoeboid cell.

Whose law states that at a junction in an electric circuit, the sum of the currents flowing into the junction is equal to the sum of the currents flowing out of the junction?

  1. A.Michael Faraday
  2. B.Georg Simon Ohm
  3. C.Victor Francis Hess
  4. D.Gustav Robert Kirchhoff
Show answer
Correct answer: D. Gustav Robert Kirchhoff

This is Kirchhoff's first law, the current law or junction rule, which he stated in 1845. It says the total current entering a junction equals the total current leaving it, because charge cannot pile up or vanish at a point.

If the magnification produced by a lens is +2, then the image is

  1. A.erect, virtual and smaller than the object.
  2. B.inverted, real and smaller than the object.
  3. C.erect, virtual and larger than the object.
  4. D.inverted, real and larger than the object.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. erect, virtual and larger than the object.

For a lens, magnification m is the image height divided by the object height, which also equals v divided by u. A plus sign means the image is erect and virtual, and a value of 2 means it is twice as tall as the object.
