With reference to the climate of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, which of the following statements is/are correct ? 1. The climate can be defined as a humid, tropical coastal climate. 2. It receives rainfall from both South-west monsoon and North-east monsoon. 3. Maximum precipitation is between December and May. Select the answer using the code given below :

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.1 and 2
  3. C.2 and 3
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

B. 1 and 2

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1 and 2. The islands have a warm, humid tropical maritime climate and get rain from both monsoons, but December to May is their drier part of the year.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands lie close to the equator in the Bay of Bengal, between about 6° and 14° North. Surrounded by sea, they stay warm all year, with temperatures mostly between 23 °C and 31 °C and high humidity, so statement 1 is correct. The south-west monsoon brings heavy rain from about May to September, and the north-east monsoon adds more rain in October to December, giving roughly 3,000 mm a year; statement 2 is correct.

Statement 3 is wrong: the period from about January to April is the relatively dry season; most rain falls between May and December.

So A, C and D are wrong.

Exam tip: Andaman and Nicobar = humid tropical maritime climate, rain from both monsoons, wettest May–December.
