Consider the following pairs : Peak — Mountains 1. Namcha Barwa — Garhwal Himalaya 2. Nanda Devi — Kumaon Himalaya 3. Nokrek — Sikkim Himalaya Which of the pairs given above is/are correctly matched?

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.2 only
  3. C.1 and 3
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

B. 2 only

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 2 only. Nanda Devi belongs to the Kumaon Himalaya, but Namcha Barwa and Nokrek are wrongly placed.

Nanda Devi (7,816 m) is the highest peak lying wholly within India and the highest in Uttarakhand. It stands in the Kumaon Himalaya, the stretch between the Satluj and the Kali rivers, and is the core of the Nanda Devi National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. So pair 2 is correct.

Pair 1 is wrong: Namcha Barwa (7,782 m) is in Tibet at the eastern end of the Himalaya, where the Tsangpo (Brahmaputra) bends sharply around it; it is not in the Garhwal Himalaya.

Pair 3 is wrong: Nokrek is the highest peak of the Garo Hills in Meghalaya and the core of the Nokrek Biosphere Reserve; it is not part of the Sikkim Himalaya.

So A, C and D are wrong.

Exam tip: Nanda Devi – Kumaon; Namcha Barwa – eastern Himalaya, Brahmaputra bend; Nokrek – Garo Hills, Meghalaya.
