Which of the following is/are tributary/tributaries of Brahmaputra? 1. Dibang 2. Kameng 3. Lohit Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. A.1 only
  2. B.2 and 3 only
  3. C.1 and 3 only
  4. D.1, 2 and 3

Correct answer

D. 1, 2 and 3

Explanation

The correct answer is D, 1, 2 and 3. Dibang, Kameng and Lohit all flow from Arunachal Pradesh into the Brahmaputra.

The Brahmaputra rises as the Tsangpo near Mansarovar in Tibet, enters India as the Siang (Dihang) in Arunachal Pradesh, and near Sadiya in Assam is joined by the Dibang and the Lohit, both left-bank tributaries; the combined river is called the Brahmaputra from there. The Kameng, known as the Jia Bharali in Assam, rises in the Tawang area and joins the Brahmaputra from the north bank near Tezpur.

A is wrong because it leaves out the Kameng and the Lohit.

B is wrong because it leaves out the Dibang.

C is wrong because it leaves out the Kameng.

Other important tributaries are the Subansiri, the Manas and the Teesta on the right bank, and the Dhansiri and Burhi Dihing on the left.

Exam tip: Siang + Dibang + Lohit meet near Sadiya to form the Brahmaputra; Subansiri is its largest tributary.
