Verses ascribed to poet-saint Kabir have been compiled in which of the following traditions? 1. Bijak in Varanasi 2. Kabir Granthavali in Rajasthan 3. Adi Granth Sahib Select the correct answer using the code given below.

  1. A.1 and 2 only
  2. B.1, 2 and 3
  3. C.2 and 3 only
  4. D.3 only

Correct answer

B. 1, 2 and 3

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1, 2 and 3. Kabir's verses survive in three separate but overlapping traditions: the Bijak, the Kabir Granthavali and the Adi Granth Sahib.

Kabir, a weaver of Varanasi who lived around the fifteenth century, spoke of a formless God and mocked empty ritual in both Hindu and Muslim practice. He did not write his verses down himself; they were remembered, sung and later collected by his followers. The Kabir Bijak is preserved by the Kabirpanth in Varanasi and other parts of Uttar Pradesh. The Kabir Granthavali is linked with the Dadupanth in Rajasthan. Many of his compositions, about 500 verses, are also included in the Adi Granth Sahib compiled by Guru Arjan in 1604.

Option A is wrong, because it leaves out the Adi Granth Sahib, which does carry Kabir's verses. Option C is wrong, because it leaves out the Bijak, the most important Kabirpanthi collection. Option D is wrong, because it keeps only the Adi Granth and drops the other two traditions.

Exam tip: Bijak = Kabirpanth, Varanasi; Granthavali = Dadupanth, Rajasthan; also in the Adi Granth.
