Who among the following was the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army of independent India?

  1. A.S. M. Srinagesh
  2. B.K. M. Cariappa
  3. C.K. S. Thimayya
  4. D.K. S. Rajendrasinhji

Correct answer

B. K. M. Cariappa

Explanation

The correct answer is B, K. M. Cariappa. General K. M. Cariappa took over as the first Indian Commander-in-Chief of the Indian Army on 15 January 1949.

He succeeded General Sir Francis Butcher, the last British chief, and the day he took charge is celebrated every year as Army Day on 15 January. Cariappa, from Coorg in present-day Karnataka, had led Indian forces in the 1947-48 operations in Jammu and Kashmir. In 1986 he was made a Field Marshal, a rank held in India only by him and Sam Manekshaw.

Option A is wrong because S. M. Srinagesh became Chief of the Army Staff later, in 1955. Option C is wrong because K. S. Thimayya was Army Chief from 1957 to 1961. Option D is wrong because K. S. Rajendrasinhji succeeded Cariappa in 1953 and became the first to hold the renamed post of Chief of the Army Staff in 1955.

Exam tip: Cariappa, 15 January 1949 = Army Day; Field Marshals of India = Manekshaw (1973) and Cariappa (1986).
