Why in News

On 30 October 2026 ICAR and CGIAR announced that New Delhi will host the CGIAR Science and Partnership Week from 12 to 17 April 2027, the second edition after Nairobi.

The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and CGIAR announced on 30 October 2026 that New Delhi will host the CGIAR Science and Partnership Week from 12 to 17 April 2027. More than 5,000 delegates are expected. The week is being organised by ICAR, which works under the Department of Agricultural Research and Education in the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, together with CGIAR.

Who will attend

Researchers, farmers, government officials, startups and businesses from many countries will gather in the capital. They are to examine the innovations that have already reached farmers and identify the places where more effort is needed so that many more growers benefit.

Why India is hosting

ICAR runs one of the largest national agricultural research systems in the world, and its scientists have worked alongside CGIAR for more than five decades. Ten CGIAR research centres are currently active in India, covering crops, water, livestock, fish, nutrition and policy. CGIAR itself is an international agricultural research partnership of 15 research centres working in over 100 countries.

Indian science beyond the country

A groundnut sample from India, conserved and shared by ICRISAT, went into varieties that farmers now grow in Malawi, Uganda, Mozambique and Zambia. The Centre of Excellence for South-South Cooperation in Agriculture at Hyderabad passes proven farming methods to countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America.

What the organisers said

Dr M L Jat, Secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education and Director General of ICAR, recalled the long association with CGIAR and the part played by CIMMYT, IRRI and ICRISAT in building India's food production after the Green Revolution, which carried the country from dependence on imports to a major producer and exporter. He said India's priority would be South-South cooperation and the sharing of its farm innovations with the Global South, particularly African nations, naming climate resilient agriculture, digital agriculture and AgriStack, farm mechanisation, millets and natural farming.

Dr Ismahane Elouafi, Executive Managing Director of CGIAR, said the week would mark the achievements of the partnership while setting an agenda for the next fifty years. Dr Himanshu Pathak, Director General of ICRISAT, said the event would showcase India's farm achievements and help co-create answers to new challenges.

The first edition

The first CGIAR Science Week was held in Nairobi, Kenya, in April 2025, where CGIAR released its present research portfolio. The New Delhi edition will concentrate on turning science into impact, on South-South cooperation and on how farm research can serve India's vision for 2047. The programme and the speakers will be announced in the months ahead.
