Why in News

On 30 October 2026 the Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced that the 19th India-BLEU Joint Economic Commission session had been held in Luxembourg a day earlier, on 29 October 2026.

The nineteenth session of the Joint Economic Commission (JEC) between India and the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union (BLEU) took place in Luxembourg on 29 October 2026. The Ministry of Commerce and Industry announced the outcome a day later. The meeting gave the three sides a setting in which to take stock of trade and investment between them and to look for ways of widening economic cooperation.

Who led the talks

Three officials co-chaired the session. India was led by Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal. Belgium was represented by Filip Vanden Bulcke, Director-General for Geo-Economy and Economic Diplomacy in the Federal Public Service for Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation. Luxembourg was represented by Henri Schumacher, Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.

Sectors on the table

The talks ranged across a wide list of priority areas:

  • Logistics, with attention to air connectivity and ports
  • Renewable energy and clean technology
  • Financial services and FinTech
  • Digital transformation and information and communication technology
  • Healthcare and life sciences
  • Ayurveda and traditional medicine
  • The agro and food processing industry

The session also agreed to look for openings in aerospace, in research and innovation, and in higher education and skill development. Market related matters were taken up as well, with the intention of easing trade concerns, improving market access and finding fresh ground for stronger economic links.

Meeting with company heads

After the commission rose, Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal met chief executives of companies based in Luxembourg. He pointed to the pace of India's economic growth and the room it leaves for investment, and named financial services, advanced manufacturing, logistics, clean energy, digital technologies, healthcare and research as fields open to partnership. He asked the companies to weigh long term investment in India, technology tie-ups and ways of working with Indian firms that supply global value chains.

About the grouping

The Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union binds the two neighbouring countries in a single economic arrangement, and India deals with them together through this commission. Sustained dialogue of this kind was described as important for economic relations that benefit all three sides.
