Ships from which of the following countries have to cross the Strait of Hormuz to reach out to the Indian Ocean ? 1. Bahrain 2. Syria 3. Qatar 4. Egypt Select the answer using the code given below :

  1. A.1 and 2
  2. B.1 and 3
  3. C.2 and 3
  4. D.3 and 4

Correct answer

B. 1 and 3

Explanation

The correct answer is B, 1 and 3. Bahrain and Qatar have coasts only on the Persian Gulf, whose sole outlet to the Indian Ocean is the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz lies between Iran to the north and the Musandam peninsula of Oman to the south, and links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Countries whose entire coastline is on the Gulf, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait and Iraq, must send every ship through it. About a fifth of the world's oil and much of Qatar's liquefied natural gas pass this way, so it is one of the world's most important chokepoints.

A is wrong because Syria's coast is on the Mediterranean Sea; its ships reach the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.

C is wrong for the same reason.

D is wrong because Egypt has coasts on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and reaches the Indian Ocean through the Bab-el-Mandeb strait.

Exam tip: Hormuz = Persian Gulf to Gulf of Oman; Bab-el-Mandeb = Red Sea to Gulf of Aden.
