Rajasthan Quiz: Mewar: Guhils and Sisodias (Kumbha, Sanga, Pratap)

Kumbha, properly Kumbhakarna, ruled Mewar from 1433 to 1468 and is remembered above all as a builder of forts; Kumbhalgarh in the Aravallis carries his name and is today part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan inscribed by UNESCO in 2013.

Rana Kumbha built the nine-storeyed Tower of Victory inside Chittorgarh after his campaigns against the Malwa sultan Mahmud Khalji, which began in 1440.

Sangram Singh, known as Rana Sanga, had built the widest Rajput confederacy of his age and met Babur at Khanwa near Bharatpur in 1527.

Udai Singh, saved in childhood by the nurse Panna Dhai from the usurper Banbir, founded a new capital in the valley beside Lake Pichola in 1559, moving the seat of Mewar away from the exposed hill fort of Chittorgarh.

The battle was fought on 18 June 1576 in the narrow pass of Haldighati near Khamnor, between Maharana Pratap of Mewar and Akbar's army.

Akbar sent the Kachhwaha ruler of Amer, Man Singh I, to command at Haldighati, with Asaf Khan beside him. The detail matters in exams because it makes the battle a contest between two Rajput houses in different political positions: Amer had accepted the Mughal alliance, while Mewar refused it.

After Alauddin Khalji's capture of Chittor in 1303 the fort passed out of Guhil hands, and it was Rana Hammir who won it back about 1326.

Alauddin Khalji besieged Chittor in 1303, defeated Rawal Ratan Singh and handed the fort to his son Khizr Khan, after whom it was renamed Khizrabad.

Akbar besieged the fort in 1567 and took it in 1568, and its defenders Jaimal of Badnor and Patta of Kelwa died fighting.

Bhamashah served Maharana Pratap as minister and is remembered for placing his own treasure at the Maharana's disposal when the struggle seemed finished after Haldighati.
