Who coined the term “artificial intelligence”?

  1. A.Alan Turing
  2. B.John McCarthy
  3. C.Marvin Minsky
  4. D.Joseph Weizenbaum
Show answer
Correct answer: B. John McCarthy

He coined the phrase artificial intelligence in the proposal for a summer research workshop held at Dartmouth College in 1956, and that conference is treated as the moment the subject was founded; McCarthy also created the LISP programming language and is commonly called the father of artificial intelligence.

When the temperature of a pure semiconductor is raised, its electrical resistance:

  1. A.Increases
  2. B.Decreases
  3. C.Remains unchanged
  4. D.First increases and then becomes zero
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Decreases

Heating a semiconductor gives more electrons enough energy to cross the forbidden gap into the conduction band, and each one that crosses leaves a hole behind, so the number of charge carriers rises sharply and the resistance falls; a semiconductor therefore has a negative temperature coefficient of resistance.

  3. C.Automated Thermal Metal Plating
  4. D.Applied Technology for Microchip Production
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Assembly, Testing, Marking and Packaging

Chip making has three broad stages: design, which is done by fabless companies and design houses; fabrication, in which circuits are built on a silicon wafer in a fab; and the back end, in which the wafer is cut into individual chips that are then assembled, tested, marked and packaged…

Moore's law, stated in 1965, concerns which of the following?

  1. A.The resistance of a semiconductor at absolute zero
  2. B.The doubling of the number of transistors on a chip over a regular period
  3. C.The maximum voltage a diode can block
  4. D.The speed of electrons in a vacuum tube
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The doubling of the number of transistors on a chip over a regular period

Gordon Moore, a co-founder of Intel, observed in 1965 that the number of components that could be packed economically into an integrated circuit was doubling at a steady rate, and the observation, later quoted as a doubling roughly every two years, became the planning rule of the whole industry.

What is the beta current ratio of a transistor?

  1. A.IC/IB
  2. B.IB/IE
  3. C.IE/IC
  4. D.IC/IE
Show answer
Correct answer: A. IC/IB

Beta is the current gain of a bipolar junction transistor in the common emitter configuration: a very small change in the base current produces a much larger change in the collector current, and the ratio of the two is beta, which commonly lies between about twenty and several hundred.

Q4872.Science & TechnologyAsked in: RRB ALP · 21 Jan 2019, Shift 3Medium

In a bipolar transistor, alpha is the ratio of:

  1. A.collector current to emitter current
  2. B.emitter current to collector current
  3. C.base current to collector current
  4. D.collector current to base current
Show answer
Correct answer: A. collector current to emitter current

In a bipolar junction transistor the emitter injects carriers, the thin lightly doped base lets most of them through, and the collector gathers them, so the emitter current divides into a large collector current and a small base current; alpha is defined as the collector current divided by the emitter…

In a p-type semiconductor, the majority charge carriers are:

  1. A.Electrons
  2. B.Holes
  3. C.Protons
  4. D.Positive ions
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Holes

A trivalent dopant such as boron, aluminium, gallium or indium forms only three covalent bonds with the surrounding silicon atoms, leaving one bond incomplete; that vacancy behaves as a mobile positive carrier called a hole, and holes therefore become the majority carriers while thermally generated electrons remain the minority carriers.

Q4875.Science & TechnologyEasy

Which of the following impurities is added to silicon to make an n-type semiconductor?

  1. A.Boron
  2. B.Aluminium
  3. C.Phosphorus
  4. D.Indium
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Phosphorus

Silicon has four valence electrons, so adding a pentavalent atom such as phosphorus, arsenic, antimony or bismuth leaves one electron over after four bonds are formed; that spare electron is loosely held and becomes a free carrier, making electrons the majority carriers and the crystal n-type.

Q4876.Science & TechnologyAsked in: Delhi · 22 June 2022, Shift 1Medium

If np and ne is the number of holes and electrons respectively in an intrinsic semiconductor then:

  1. A.npne = 1
  2. B.np > ne
  3. C.np = ne
  4. D.np < ne
Show answer
Correct answer: C. np = ne

In an intrinsic, that is a chemically pure, semiconductor every free electron is produced by breaking a covalent bond, and breaking a bond leaves behind exactly one hole, so electrons and holes are created strictly in pairs and their concentrations must be equal.
