Physics covers matter, motion, gravitation, heat, sound, light, magnetism, electricity and the working of everyday devices such as the siphon, pressure cooker, periscope and safety fuse. Chemistry covers changes of matter, elements and compounds, common gases, acids, bases and salts, carbon, fertilizers and the materials used to make soap, glass, cement and gunpowder. General Science covers cells, the human body, diseases, diet, the solar system and eminent scientists. Section D spans Indian history and culture, the freedom movement, the Constitution, Five Year Plans, Panchayati Raj and world history from the Renaissance to the Russian Revolution. Naphthalene burns with a yellow sooty flame. This is because

  1. A.carbon to hydrogen ratio is low
  2. B.there is incomplete combustion
  3. C.there is excess supply of air
  4. D.of presence of impurities of nitrogen and sulfur
Show answer

Which one of the following statements with regard to ultra violet light is NOT correct?

  1. A.It is an electromagnetic wave.
  2. B.It can travel through vacuum.
  3. C.It is a longitudinal wave.
  4. D.Its wavelength is shorter/ smaller than that of visible light.
Show answer
Correct answer: C. It is a longitudinal wave.

Ultraviolet light is a transverse wave, not a longitudinal one, so this statement is the wrong one. In an electromagnetic wave the electric and magnetic fields vibrate at right angles to each other and to the direction the wave travels, which is the definition of a transverse wave.

Which one of the following statements with regard to Jet stream, an upper level troposphere wave, is not correct?

  1. A.It is a narrow band of high-velocity wind.
  2. B.It follows the wave path near the tropopause at elevations of 8 km to 15 km.
  3. C.Jet streams are typically continuous over long distances.
  4. D.In summer, the polar front jet achieves its maximum force.
Show answer
Correct answer: D. In summer, the polar front jet achieves its maximum force.

The polar front jet is strongest in winter, not in summer, so this statement is the incorrect one. A jet stream is a fast, narrow ribbon of westerly wind in the upper troposphere, and its speed depends on the temperature contrast across the front below it.

Which one of the following statements is correct with reference to normal lapse rate?

  1. A.Temperature is highest at ground level and decreases with increasing altitude.
  2. B.Temperature is lowest at ground level and increases with increasing altitude.
  3. C.Temperature remains stable with increasing altitude.
  4. D.Temperature first increases with increasing altitude and gradually starts decreasing.
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Temperature is highest at ground level and decreases with increasing altitude.

In the troposphere the air is warmed mainly from below: the earth absorbs incoming short-wave insolation and then heats the layer of air touching it by conduction, radiation and convection.
