Why in News

On 2 November 2026 DPIIT announced its progress under Special Campaign 6, reporting disposal of more than 99 per cent of public grievances and closure of around 83 per cent of identified e-files as on 28 October 2026.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has reported its results under Special Campaign 6. The drive is run on the guidance of the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances (DARPG) and is meant to make cleanliness, or Swachhata, a habit in government offices while cutting down the pile of pending work.

The two phases

PhaseDates
Preparatory phase15 to 30 September 2026
Implementation phase2 to 31 October 2026

The department carried out the campaign along with its attached and subordinate offices, so that the same standards applied across the whole organisation rather than in the headquarters alone.

What was disposed of

Every category of pending reference was first identified and then taken up for disposal. These included references from the Prime Minister's Office, the Cabinet, Members of Parliament, State Governments, and public grievances along with appeals filed against their disposal. The position as on 28 October 2026 was as follows:

  • More than half of the references received from the Prime Minister's Office disposed of
  • Around three quarters of references from the Cabinet, the Inter-Ministerial Committee and State Governments disposed of
  • Over 99 per cent of public grievances disposed of
  • More than four fifths of public grievance appeals disposed of
  • About 83 per cent of the identified e-files closed

Why the campaign matters

Special Campaign is an annual exercise across central government departments under which offices clean up records, weed out files that no longer serve a purpose, free up space and clear long-pending references. Closing electronic files matters because an e-file left open blocks the record from being archived and keeps the matter formally alive. DPIIT says the drive has improved cleanliness at the workplace and the general working environment for its officials and staff, and has made officers more aware of record management and the need to decide pending matters on time.

The department has said it will carry on with the twin goals of institutionalising Swachhata and keeping pendency to a minimum in its attached and subordinate offices, so that the offices stay cleaner, work faster and respond better to the citizens and businesses that deal with them. For aspirants, the useful points are the campaign number, the ministry it belongs to, the nodal department DARPG, the dates of both phases and the disposal percentages.
