TDB Backs Peptris VIGOR Programme With Rs 86 Crore RDI Support
The Technology Development Board has agreed to give Peptris Technologies of Bengaluru Rs 86 crore from the RDI Fund for its VIGOR drug discovery project.

Why in News
On 12 October 2026 the Technology Development Board of the Department of Science and Technology signed an agreement with Peptris Technologies Private Limited of Bengaluru for Rs 86 crore of RDI Fund support to the VIGOR programme, which will carry four AI-discovered drug candidates from TRL-4 to TRL-6.
The Technology Development Board (TDB), which sits under the Department of Science and Technology (DST), has put its signature to an agreement with Peptris Technologies Private Limited, a company based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The board will place Rs 86 crore behind the company's medicine development work, and the money comes out of the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The agreement was made public on 12 October 2026.
What the project is
The project has been titled VIGOR: Advancing AI-Discovered Molecules from Bench to Clinic. Its full cost is put at Rs 172 crore, which means the board is carrying half of the bill. The support is not a plain grant either. It reaches the company as Optionally Convertible Debt (OCD), an instrument the lender may later turn into shareholding if it chooses. What the money buys is movement up the ladder of readiness: four candidate medicines are to be carried from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-4 to TRL-6. That climb covers preclinical study, laboratory validation and the groundwork a trial on human volunteers demands, including the studies that enable an investigational new drug filing. Three years have been allowed for the work, and formulation development and trial preparation sit inside that period.
The four candidates
Every one of the four molecules was picked out by the company's own artificial-intelligence platform rather than by the slow screening of compound libraries. Each is parked at TRL-4 today.
| Candidate | Disease area |
| PEPR111 | Neuromuscular disorders and oncology |
| PEPRX101 | Alopecia |
| PEPR202 | Neuropathy |
| PEPR112 | DMD |
Why the gap needed filling
Software can throw up a promising molecule quickly, suggest how a disease works and shorten the hunt for a treatment. What software cannot do is prove the molecule safe. That proof asks for bench experiments, animal study and a regulated trial, and the bill for it is where many Indian discoveries stall. TDB's stated purpose in backing the programme is to bridge exactly that stretch between a computer result and a medicine fit for testing. Global contract research organisation networks will be used for part of the validation.
In the board's words
Rajesh Kumar Pathak, Secretary of TDB, said machine intelligence could change the way fresh candidates are spotted and taken forward, but warned that turning a hopeful result into a proven one still asks for steady money, hard scientific scrutiny and an orderly path of development. He placed the RDI Fund as the instrument for such technology-heavy programmes and tied it to India's strength in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals and health care built on artificial intelligence.

Exam Point of View
Remember the funding body (TDB, under DST), the company and its city (Peptris Technologies, Bengaluru, Karnataka), the amount (Rs 86 crore) against the total project cost (Rs 172 crore), the fund (RDI Fund), the instrument (Optionally Convertible Debt), the programme name (VIGOR), the TRL jump (4 to 6), the four molecules with their disease areas, the three-year span and the Secretary's name, Rajesh Kumar Pathak.
Practice Questions
The Technology Development Board has extended Rs 86 crore of RDI Fund support to which company for the VIGOR programme?
- A.Biocon Limited, Bengaluru
- B.Peptris Technologies Private Limited, Bengaluru
- C.Bharat Biotech International, Hyderabad
- D.Serum Institute of India, Pune
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Peptris Technologies Private Limited, Bengaluru. The Technology Development Board, which works under the Department of Science and Technology, signed its agreement with this Bengaluru company in Karnataka and committed Rs 86 crore from the Research Development and Innovation Fund towards the VIGOR programme, whose full cost is Rs 172 crore. The support is being routed as Optionally Convertible Debt. Option A, Biocon Limited, is not the firm named in the agreement, even though it too is based in Bengaluru, so the city alone cannot settle the question. Option C, Bharat Biotech International of Hyderabad, has no part in this arrangement; the announcement names neither that company nor the city of Hyderabad. Option D, Serum Institute of India of Pune, is similarly outside this agreement. Only Peptris Technologies is described as holding the artificial-intelligence platform on which the four candidates PEPR111, PEPRX101, PEPR202 and PEPR112 were discovered, and only that company will carry them from Technology Readiness Level four to Technology Readiness Level six.
What is the total cost of the VIGOR drug development project for which TDB has committed Rs 86 crore?
- A.Rs 108 crore
- B.Rs 145 crore
- C.Rs 172 crore
- D.Rs 250 crore
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 172 crore. The project titled VIGOR: Advancing AI-Discovered Molecules from Bench to Clinic has been costed at that figure in full, and the Technology Development Board is carrying Rs 86 crore of it from the Research Development and Innovation Fund, which works out to exactly half the outlay. A candidate who remembers only the board's share will be tempted by a smaller total, which is why options A and B are offered: neither Rs 108 crore nor Rs 145 crore matches the cost stated for the project, and neither is double the board's contribution. Option D, Rs 250 crore, overstates the project and would leave the board's share well under half. The arithmetic relationship is worth fixing in memory, since examiners often ask for the sponsor's share and the project cost in the same question. The support reaches the company as Optionally Convertible Debt, and the work is spread over three years.
In the VIGOR programme, the four AI-discovered drug candidates are to be advanced between which Technology Readiness Levels?
- A.TRL-1 to TRL-3
- B.TRL-4 to TRL-6
- C.TRL-6 to TRL-9
- D.TRL-2 to TRL-8
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is TRL-4 to TRL-6. Every one of the four molecules, PEPR111 for neuromuscular disorders and oncology, PEPRX101 for alopecia, PEPR202 for neuropathy and PEPR112 for DMD, stands at Technology Readiness Level four today, and the stated purpose of the money is to carry each of them up to Technology Readiness Level six. That stretch covers advanced preclinical work, the studies that enable an investigational new drug filing, formulation development and the preparation needed before a trial on human volunteers can begin. Option A, the first three levels, describes work already completed before this agreement was reached. Option C begins where the project ends, so it would describe a later phase of clinical development rather than this one. Option D stretches the span far wider than the agreement provides and would take the molecules through to a marketed product. The climb is planned over three years with global contract research organisation networks assisting on validation.
