Why in News

The Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign concluded on 2 October 2026, observed as Swachh Bharat Diwas and the 157th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, with departments across the Union Government holding closing events.

The fortnight-long Swachhata Hi Seva (SHS) 2026 campaign came to a close on 2 October 2026. The Department of Food and Public Distribution (DFPD), under the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, wound up its part of the drive with cleanliness and awareness events spread across the country.

How the campaign ran

The drive opened on 17 September 2026 with the taking of the Swachhata pledge. Over the following fortnight the Department, together with its public sector undertakings and its attached and subordinate offices, ran cleanliness drives in central government offices, door-to-door awareness visits, drawing competitions and walkathons. Saplings were planted under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, and offices took part in Ek Din Ek Ghanta Ek Saath. Cultural formats were used as well, among them poem recitation, Nukkad Natak and slogan writing.

The closing day

On the eve of Swachh Bharat Diwas, officials themselves joined sweeping and cleaning work to underline the dignity of labour. On the concluding day the Department offered floral tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 157th birth anniversary, the date observed every year as Swachh Bharat Diwas. SafaiMitras of the Department were felicitated with gifts for keeping office premises clean, and the Food Corporation of India held a closing ceremony at its headquarters at which safai workers were given awards. The Central Warehousing Corporation planted saplings under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and its officials took the Swachhata pledge through the MyGov portal. Plantation drives were also held by the offices of IGMRI at Hyderabad and Ludhiana and by the Central Grain Analysis Laboratory at CGO Complex, New Delhi.

Schools join the drive

The Department of School Education and Literacy of the Ministry of Education held a Swachhata Shramdaan at a PM SHRI school in New Delhi under the same campaign. It was led by Secretary Shri T. K. Anil Kumar and carried out under the Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE, with students, teachers and officers of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan taking part. The school campus, a community space next to it and the park facing the school were cleaned. A plantation programme under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0 followed, along with a quiz on the Solid Waste Management Rules to teach source segregation.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalMedium

On which date did the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026 campaign begin with the taking of the Swachhata pledge?

  1. A.2 September 2026
  2. B.17 September 2026
  3. C.1 October 2026
  4. D.25 September 2026
Show answer

Correct answer: B. 17 September 2026

Explanation

The correct answer is 17 September 2026. The campaign opened on that date with the taking of the Swachhata pledge and ran as a fortnight-long drive that ended on 2 October 2026, the day observed as Swachh Bharat Diwas. Through the fortnight offices held cleanliness drives, door-to-door awareness visits, drawing competitions, walkathons, plantation under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam and cultural activities such as Nukkad Natak and slogan writing. Option A is wrong because the campaign had not started at the beginning of September. Option C is wrong because that date fell in the last stretch of the drive rather than at its start, when officials joined sweeping work on the eve of Swachh Bharat Diwas. Option D is wrong because it falls in the middle of the fortnight, after the pledge had already been taken. The pair of dates to memorise is 17 September to 2 October.

Q2.NationalMedium

The closing day of the campaign marked which birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi?

  1. A.150th
  2. B.155th
  3. C.157th
  4. D.160th
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 157th

Explanation

The correct answer is 157th. On the concluding day of the campaign the Department offered floral tribute to the Father of the Nation on his 157th birth anniversary, the date that is observed across the country as Swachh Bharat Diwas. Option A names the anniversary that was marked in an earlier year and is often remembered because of the sanitation targets attached to it, so it is a tempting distractor, but it is not the one marked here. Option B names an anniversary that had already passed before this campaign. Option D names an anniversary still in the future. Candidates should link three things together for this date: Gandhi Jayanti, Swachh Bharat Diwas and the closing day of Swachhata Hi Seva, and should be able to state the anniversary number asked for in the year under study.

Q3.NationalMedium

The Swachhata Shramdaan held by the Department of School Education and Literacy was carried out under which initiative?

  1. A.Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE
  2. B.Atal Tinkering Labs
  3. C.Nipun Bharat Mission
  4. D.Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE

Explanation

The correct answer is Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE. The Shramdaan was organised at a PM SHRI school in New Delhi under the aegis of Eco Clubs for Mission LiFE and was led by the Secretary of the Department of School Education and Literacy, with students, teachers, senior officials and officers of the Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan joining in. The drive covered the school campus, the community space next to it and the park facing the school, and was followed by a plantation programme under Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 3.0 and a quiz on the Solid Waste Management Rules. Options B, C and D name other well-known school-level programmes of the education sector, but none of them was the banner under which this cleanliness drive was conducted. Remember the pairing of Eco Clubs with Mission LiFE in school-level environment activities.
