Why in News
On 12 October 2026 Union Minister for DoNER Jyotiraditya M. Scindia inaugurated and laid foundation stones for ten development projects worth about Rs 331 crore in Mizoram, in the presence of Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma.
Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, Union Minister for Communications and for the Development of the North Eastern Region (DoNER), took up ten development projects worth about Rs 331 crore in Mizoram on 12 October 2026. He dedicated five of them, costing around Rs 102 crore, to the people and laid foundation stones for five more worth Rs 228.54 crore. Mizoram Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma was present at Tuivamit, where the minister went after landing in Aizawl.
What was dedicated and what was begun
The works dedicated to the people include the Daido-Vangkawt Road in Champhai, a 3.33-kilometre stretch built under NESIDS-Roads at Rs 17.24 crore in the Mizo ginger pilot belt; a 132 kV transmission line from Bairabi to West Phaileng through Mamit, 74 circuit kilometres long, at Rs 54.95 crore; the augmentation of the North Vanlaiphai water supply scheme at Rs 20.50 crore; an AYUSH Development Centre at Rs 2.64 crore; and the Aizawl Institute of Arts and Music for the North Eastern Region at Tuivamit Tlang, built at Rs 6.90 crore under the schemes of the North Eastern Council.
Foundation stones were laid for the Pukzing-Silsuri Road in Mamit, a 21-kilometre project at Rs 100.24 crore; the Tualpui-Champhai Road, also 21 kilometres, at Rs 57.01 crore across Khawzawl and Champhai districts; the Oil Palm Link Road of 32.70 kilometres at Rs 26.49 crore, expected to serve nearly 60,000 people in 19 villages of Kolasib, Mamit, Lunglei and Lawngtlai; a 40-bed hostel for the ANM School at Zemabawk in Aizawl at Rs 10 crore under NESIDS-OTRI; and sports infrastructure worth Rs 34.80 crore.
Money for the region
| MDoNER outlay for the North East, FY 2026-27 | Rs 6,812.30 crore |
| Projects taken up in Mizoram | 375, worth Rs 4,617.70 crore |
| Already completed | 295, worth Rs 2,692.31 crore |
| Mizoram Ginger Mission | Rs 189.79 crore |
The minister said nearly four of every five sanctioned projects in the state stood completed, a result of work between the Centre and the state government. The Ginger Mission, he said, would draw close to 20,000 farming households into one value chain covering cultivation, processing, branding, transport and markets at home and abroad, so that more of the price of Mizo ginger stays with the grower.
Connectivity and tourism
- The 51.38-kilometre Bairabi-Sairang railway line placed Mizoram on India’s railway map
- More than 15 lakh passengers have travelled on over 1,100 train trips linking Aizawl with Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi
- The Sairang-Silchar service has tied the state closer to the Barak Valley
- The first Food Corporation of India food-grain rake reached Sairang in March 2026 with about 26,000 quintals of rice from Punjab in 42 wagons
- Mizoram drew 4,94,362 domestic and 7,389 foreign tourist visits in the first six months of 2026
Calling the projects an investment in both routes and roots, Scindia said roads and lines carry Mizoram to the world while institutions of health, education, culture and sport keep it rooted. He described the effort as the old Mizo practice of Hnatlang, voluntary collective work for the village, carried out on a larger scale. This was his 35th visit to the North Eastern Region, and his two-day stay in Mizoram on 12 and 13 October 2026 also takes in students, civil society and bankers.

Practice Questions
What was the total value of the development projects inaugurated and begun by the Union DoNER Minister in Mizoram in October 2026?
- A.Rs 102 crore
- B.Rs 228.54 crore
- C.Rs 331 crore
- D.Rs 512 crore
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 331 crore. Union Minister for Communications and DoNER, Jyotiraditya M. Scindia, took up ten projects of about this value in Mizoram on 12 October 2026 in the presence of Chief Minister Pu Lalduhoma. The figure is made of two parts, and that is where the other options come from. Option A, Rs 102 crore, is only the worth of the five projects dedicated to the people, among them the Daido-Vangkawt Road in Champhai and the 132 kV Bairabi-West Phaileng transmission line. Option B, Rs 228.54 crore, is only the worth of the five projects whose foundation stones were laid, such as the Pukzing-Silsuri Road and the sports infrastructure works. Added together these two parts give the total of about Rs 331 crore, so neither part alone is the answer. Option D is not a figure connected with this visit.
What is the outlay of the Mizoram Ginger Mission announced for the state’s ginger growers?
- A.Rs 89.79 crore
- B.Rs 189.79 crore
- C.Rs 289.79 crore
- D.Rs 389.79 crore
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Rs 189.79 crore. The Mizoram Ginger Mission of this size is meant to draw nearly 20,000 farming households into a single value chain that covers cultivation, processing, branding, connectivity and access to national and international markets. Mizo ginger was described as the unique strength and economic identity of the state, and the aim of the mission is not merely to raise production but to see that farmers and local communities keep a larger share of the value created, which is why the road built in the ginger pilot belt matters to it. Options A, C and D give sums that were not sanctioned for the mission. Candidates should also link the mission with the Daido-Vangkawt Road in Champhai, a 3.33-kilometre road built under NESIDS-Roads at Rs 17.24 crore to carry produce from that belt to the market.
The railway line that brought Mizoram onto India’s railway map connects Bairabi with which station, and how long is it?
- A.Sairang, 51.38 kilometres
- B.Silchar, 74 kilometres
- C.Sairang, 21 kilometres
- D.Zemabawk, 32.70 kilometres
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Sairang, 51.38 kilometres. The Bairabi-Sairang railway line of that length was called a historic milestone that placed Mizoram on the railway map of the country and changed the state’s access to major economic centres. More than 15 lakh passengers have since travelled on over 1,100 train trips that link Aizawl with Guwahati, Kolkata and Delhi, and the Sairang-Silchar service has strengthened ties with the Barak Valley. Sairang also received the first Food Corporation of India food-grain rake in March 2026, carrying about 26,000 quintals of rice from Punjab in 42 wagons. Option B mixes in the 74 circuit kilometres of the Bairabi-West Phaileng power line. Option C uses the length of the road projects at Pukzing-Silsuri and Tualpui-Champhai, and option D borrows the length of the Oil Palm Link Road.
