Why in News

On 28 September 2026 Indian Railways announced three approvals: Kavach 4.0 for the Varanasi Division, the Barbil-Bolanikhadan doubling of South Eastern Railway, and a new tri-weekly train between Machilipatnam and Kurnool City in Andhra Pradesh.

Indian Railways cleared three separate proposals on the same day: an anti-collision system for a division in Uttar Pradesh, a short but heavily loaded doubling in the mineral belt of Odisha, and a new passenger service in Andhra Pradesh.

Kavach 4.0 for Varanasi Division

Version 4.0 of Kavach has been sanctioned for 614.75 route kilometres of the Varanasi (BSB) Division of North Eastern Railway, at a cost of 223 crore rupees. The work covers the balance sections of the division that the system had not yet reached. Kavach is an Automatic Train Protection system designed in the country; it guards against a train passing a signal at danger, puts the brakes on by itself where the situation demands it, and keeps watch on how a train is being driven.

Doubling on the Barbil-Bolanikhadan line

The second approval is for doubling a stretch of just 6 km between Barbil and Bolanikhadan on South Eastern Railway, at a completion cost of 122 crore rupees. Short as it is, the section sits on the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor and is single line today, carrying roughly 9 MTPA in about 6 loaded rakes a day. The traffic is high-grade iron ore and pellets moving out of SAIL's Bolani mines and private sidings, Rungta and Khatau Narbheram, towards steel plants and ports. Doubling is expected to carry an additional 8.9 MTPA once commissioned and to cut delays to freight trains, and it has been taken up ahead of the mine and port expansions that will otherwise choke the corridor.

A new train for Andhra Pradesh

The third clearance is a tri-weekly service between Machilipatnam and Kurnool City via Vijayawada on South Coast Railway, covering 499 km. The Machilipatnam-Kurnool City Express will leave at 16:55 and reach the next morning at 05:45, running on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday; the return service leaves Kurnool City at 09:30 and arrives at 21:35 the same day, on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Stops include Gudivada, Vijayawada, Narasaraopet, Vinukonda, Donakonda, Markapur Road, Cumbum, Giddalur, Diguvametta, Nandyal, Betamcherla and Dhone, linking the coastal districts with the interior of the state.

Exam Point of View

Remember Kavach 4.0 on 614.75 route km of Varanasi Division (North Eastern Railway) for 223 crore rupees and what Kavach does; the 6 km Barbil-Bolanikhadan doubling of South Eastern Railway for 122 crore rupees on the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor with an extra 8.9 MTPA; and the 499 km tri-weekly Machilipatnam-Kurnool City Express via Vijayawada on South Coast Railway.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalMedium

Kavach Version 4.0 has been approved on 614.75 route kilometres of the Varanasi Division of which railway zone?

  1. A.Northern Railway
  2. B.North Eastern Railway
  3. C.North Central Railway
  4. D.East Central Railway
Show answer

Correct answer: B. North Eastern Railway

Explanation

The correct answer is North Eastern Railway. The Varanasi division, abbreviated BSB, belongs to this zone, and the sanction of 223 crore rupees extends Kavach 4.0 across the balance sections of that division, a total of 614.75 route kilometres. Option A is wrong because Northern Railway is a separate zone and the division named in this approval does not sit under it. Option C is wrong because North Central Railway, although it operates in the same broad region of the country, is not the zone to which the Varanasi division reports. Option D is wrong for the same reason: East Central Railway is headquartered elsewhere and the approval does not concern it. Kavach itself is an Automatic Train Protection system developed within the country, and its job is to stop a train from passing a signal at danger and to apply the brakes when the driver does not.

Q2.NationalMedium

The Barbil-Bolanikhadan doubling project approved by Indian Railways lies on which corridor?

  1. A.Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor
  2. B.Golden Quadrilateral Corridor
  3. C.Dedicated Freight Corridor East
  4. D.Rail Sagar Corridor
Show answer

Correct answer: A. Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor

Explanation

The correct answer is the Energy, Mineral and Cement Corridor, under which Indian Railways has identified this section. The stretch is only 6 km long but it carries high-grade iron ore and pellets from the Bolani mines of SAIL and from private sidings towards steel plants and ports, and the doubling has been cleared at a completion cost of 122 crore rupees. Option B is wrong because the Golden Quadrilateral is a highway network connecting the four large metropolitan cities and is not the frame used for this railway project. Option C is wrong because the dedicated freight corridors are separate purpose-built lines and this approval is a doubling of an existing single-line section, not a new corridor. Option D is wrong because no such corridor is named in the approval. After commissioning, the doubling is expected to move an additional 8.9 MTPA of freight and to reduce delays to goods trains.

Q3.NationalMedium

The new tri-weekly train approved between Machilipatnam and Kurnool City will cover what distance?

  1. A.399 km
  2. B.449 km
  3. C.499 km
  4. D.549 km
Show answer

Correct answer: C. 499 km

Explanation

The correct answer is 499 km. The new service runs between Machilipatnam and Kurnool City by way of Vijayawada on South Coast Railway, and that is the distance the train covers between the two ends. Option A is wrong because the run is longer than that; the train crosses from the coastal belt of Andhra Pradesh into the interior of the state and picks up a dozen stops on the way. Option B is wrong for the same reason, and no such figure attaches to this route. Option D is wrong because the distance has not been stretched that far. It is worth remembering the stopping pattern too: Gudivada, Vijayawada, Narasaraopet, Vinukonda, Donakonda, Markapur Road, Cumbum, Giddalur, Diguvametta, Nandyal, Betamcherla and Dhone. The outward service runs on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday and the return service on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday.
