PM Launches Chennai Projects, Dedicates New Metro Stretch
Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched development projects worth thirteen thousand crore rupees in Chennai and dedicated a fresh stretch of the Chennai Metro.

Why in News
On 11 October 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched development projects worth thirteen thousand crore rupees in Chennai, dedicated a new stretch of the Chennai Metro, laid the foundation stone of an advanced lubricant base oil project and visited the Brain Research Centre at IIT Madras.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Chennai on 11 October 2026 for a programme of development works that, taken together, are worth thirteen thousand crore rupees. Some of the works were completed projects being opened to the public, while for others the foundation stone was laid. In his address the Prime Minister said the set would make daily travel easier, strengthen industry and trade in Tamil Nadu, and create work for young people in the state. The Governor of Tamil Nadu, Rajendra Arlekar, Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Union Minister L. Murugan and Nainar Nagendran were present.
What the Prime Minister launched
- A further stretch of the Chennai Metro, dedicated to the public on the same day.
- The foundation stone of an advanced lubricant base oil project, which the Prime Minister said would both create jobs in the state and cut the country import bill.
- Rail and road projects, some inaugurated and some given their foundation stone.
Earlier in the day the Prime Minister visited the Brain Research Centre at IIT Madras, saying research in that field could open opportunities in public health, and he offered prayers at the Jalakandeswarar temple before the public function. The programme fell on the opening day of Navratri.
The metro numbers he cited
The Prime Minister used the occasion to set out how far urban rail has spread. In 2014, he said, metro trains ran in only five cities of the country; today metro services are operated in twenty-five cities. The network itself stood at about two hundred fifty kilometres in 2014 and has since grown past one thousand one hundred kilometres. He described urbanisation as an opportunity rather than a challenge, and public transport as the part of it that decides how easily people live.
Manufacturing, ports and fisheries
On manufacturing the Prime Minister said India is now the world second largest mobile manufacturer, that electronics exports have risen eleven times since 2014, that defence exports have grown fifty times, and that engineering exports have touched a new record. On ports he said the Union Government has decided to develop the VOC Port at Thoothukudi into a world-class mega container and green energy hub with an investment of about seventeen thousand crore rupees, after which ultra-large container vessels will be able to call there. Turnaround time for ships at Indian ports, he said, has been halved. For fishermen he listed the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana, better fishing harbours, new fish landing centres, cold chain facilities, the modernisation of the Chennai Fishing Harbour, a seaweed park in Tamil Nadu and the extension of the Kisan Credit Card, adding that seafood exports reached their highest levels in both quantity and value last year. He also noted that he had completed 25 years as head of a government, having first taken oath as a Chief Minister in October 2001.

Exam Point of View
Remember the city (Chennai), the date, the total value of the projects, the Chennai Metro stretch and the advanced lubricant base oil project. The figures most likely to be asked are the metro spread, that is twenty-five cities today against five in 2014 and a network beyond one thousand one hundred kilometres, and the VOC Port at Thoothukudi being built into a mega container and green energy hub.
Practice Questions
In which city did the Prime Minister dedicate a new metro stretch and launch development projects on 11 October 2026?
- A.Coimbatore
- B.Chennai
- C.Madurai
- D.Tiruchirappalli
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is Chennai. The Prime Minister addressed a public function in Chennai, where completed works were opened and foundation stones laid for new ones, the whole set valued at thirteen thousand crore rupees, and where a further stretch of the Chennai Metro was dedicated to the public. Option A, Coimbatore, is wrong because no event of this kind was held there; the metro stretch belongs to the Chennai network. Option C, Madurai, is wrong for the same reason, as the city finds no mention in the address. Option D, Tiruchirappalli, is also wrong, since the venue named throughout the address is Chennai and the projects relate to that city and to Tamil Nadu more widely. The Prime Minister also visited the Brain Research Centre at IIT Madras on the same day, which again places the programme in Chennai rather than in any other city of the state.
Which port is being developed as a world-class mega container and green energy hub, as announced in the Prime Minister address at Chennai?
- A.Ennore Port
- B.Karaikal Port
- C.VOC Port, Thoothukudi
- D.Chennai Port
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is VOC Port, Thoothukudi. The Prime Minister said the Union Government has recently decided to build this port into a world-class mega container and green energy hub with an investment of about seventeen thousand crore rupees, and that once the work is finished even ultra-large container vessels will be able to reach it, helping Tamil Nadu become a global hub of industry and transport. Option A, Ennore Port, is wrong because it is not the port named in the decision described. Option B, Karaikal Port, is wrong for the same reason and does not appear in the address at all. Option D, Chennai Port, is wrong because the only Chennai facility mentioned for modernisation is the Chennai Fishing Harbour, taken up for fishermen, and not the commercial port. Candidates should link the mega container and green energy hub plan specifically with Thoothukudi.
According to the Prime Minister, metro rail services are operated in how many cities of India today, compared with five cities in 2014?
- A.15
- B.20
- C.25
- D.30
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 25. The Prime Minister said that in 2014 metro trains ran in only five cities of the country, whereas metro services are today operated in twenty-five cities, and that the network itself has grown from roughly two hundred fifty kilometres in that year to more than one thousand one hundred kilometres now. Option A, 15, is wrong because it understates the present spread of the network, which has gone well past that mark. Option B, 20, is wrong for the same reason; it is close to the figure but not the number given in the address. Option D, 30, is wrong because it overstates the position, and no such count was claimed. The expansion was cited to argue that urbanisation should be treated as an opportunity, with public transport as the element that decides how easily city residents, working families, students and senior citizens are able to travel.
The Prime Minister visited a Brain Research Centre on 11 October 2026 at which institution?
- A.IIT Madras
- B.IISc Bengaluru
- C.AIIMS New Delhi
- D.IIT Bombay
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is IIT Madras. Shortly before the public function in Chennai, the Prime Minister went to the Brain Research Centre at IIT Madras and said that research in this field could create many new opportunities in the field of public health. Option B, IISc Bengaluru, is wrong because the visit described took place in Chennai on the day of the project launch, not in Karnataka. Option C, AIIMS New Delhi, is wrong because no hospital visit figures in the programme, and the centre named is attached to a technology institute rather than to a medical institute. Option D, IIT Bombay, is wrong for the same geographical reason, since the Prime Minister was in Tamil Nadu through the day. He paired the visit with the dedication of a further stretch of the Chennai Metro to describe a country drawing on both science and modern infrastructure.
