Pumped Storage: India Has 345.38 GW Potential, 7.43 GW Live
A PIB backgrounder says India has marked 320 pumped storage sites holding 345.38 GW of potential, of which 7.43 GW is running across 10 projects.

Why in News
On 19 October 2026 the Press Information Bureau published a backgrounder on pumped storage hydropower, pulling together India's operational capacity, its identified potential of 345.38 GW and the measures taken to speed such projects up.
The Press Information Bureau brought out a backgrounder on Pumped Storage Hydropower on 19 October 2026, setting out where the technology nicknamed the water battery fits into India's clean energy plans. Such a scheme lifts water from a lower reservoir into an upper one in hours when electricity is surplus, and lets it fall back through turbines when demand climbs. Energy is held as potential energy in the meantime, and the cycle repeats.
Why storage has become urgent
Installed non-fossil fuel generation capacity in India went past 300 GW by July 2026, after about 55.29 GW of such capacity was added in the financial year 2025-26. The declared goal is 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030. Sunlight and wind, however, do not arrive on demand, so the Central Electricity Authority puts the storage requirement at 73.93 GW by 2031-32. Of that, 26.69 GW is expected from pumped storage projects and 47.24 GW from battery energy storage systems. Batteries answer short bursts and help regulate frequency; pumped storage shifts large volumes of electricity across many hours and lasts decades.
Where the country stands
- Operational: 7.43 GW across 10 projects as of August 2026, each sized above 25 MW
- Under construction or implementation: 15.87 GW across 11 projects
- Concurred or appraised by the CEA: 10.40 GW across 8 projects
The potential, region by region
Surveys have marked 320 sites holding a combined 345.38 GW. Among them, 62 are on-stream schemes adding to 56.67 GW and 258 are off-stream schemes adding to 288.71 GW. The Western Region leads with 129.72 GW, which the CEA puts down to the steep fall of rivers rising in the Western Ghats; Maharashtra alone accounts for 67.36 GW and Gujarat for 33.36 GW. The Southern Region follows with 97.76 GW, the Eastern Region with 53.41 GW of which Odisha holds 41.53 GW, the Northern Region with 50.32 GW and the North Eastern Region with 14.18 GW.
Three designs, and the world's tally
Schemes are sorted by how their reservoirs sit in relation to natural watercourses: on-stream, where both reservoirs lie on a river, stream or nallah; off-stream open-loop, where only one does; and off-stream closed-loop, where neither does. Planners are looking harder for off-stream sites away from rivers, which are quicker to build and gentler on aquatic life. Across the world, installed pumped hydro capacity stood at 159.8 GW at the end of 2025 on the count of the International Renewable Energy Agency, with China near 66 GW, Japan about 22 GW and the United States about 19 GW. India was fourth with 7.18 GW.
What the government has done
The Ministry of Power notified dedicated development guidelines in April 2023, and tariff-based competitive bidding guidelines followed in February 2025. A project awarded for construction by 30 June 2028 earns a full waiver of inter-state transmission charges for 25 years from the start of commercial operation. Concurrence of a detailed project report has been shortened from 90 days to 50 days, environmental appraisal has been eased for eligible schemes, and the CEA roadmap foresees 100.81 GW being commissioned by 2035-36, lifting cumulative capacity to 105.56 GW.

Exam Point of View
Fix the figures: 345.38 GW of potential across 320 sites, 7.43 GW operational across 10 projects, 15.87 GW under construction, the CEA's 73.93 GW storage projection for 2031-32 split into 26.69 GW of pumped storage and 47.24 GW of batteries, the Western Region's lead at 129.72 GW, and India fourth in the world with 7.18 GW at the end of 2025. Also remember the three scheme types and the April 2023 guidelines.
Practice Questions
How much pumped storage potential has India identified in all, according to the PIB backgrounder?
- A.288.71 GW
- B.345.38 GW
- C.105.56 GW
- D.159.8 GW
Show answer
Surveys have marked 320 pumped storage sites in India whose capacities add up to that figure, spread over all five regions of the country and at every stage of development, including schemes already running.

- A.Southern Region
- B.Northern Region
- C.Western Region
- D.Eastern Region
Show answer
The Central Electricity Authority credits that lead to the landform of the region and the steep gradients of rivers that rise in the Western Ghats, which give engineers the height difference a pumped storage scheme needs.
Read the full explanation →How much energy storage capacity does the Central Electricity Authority project India will need by 2031-32?
- A.73.93 GW
- B.26.69 GW
- C.47.24 GW
- D.100.81 GW
Show answer
As solar and wind capacity grows, electricity has to be stored when generation runs ahead of demand and returned when it falls short, so the Central Electricity Authority projects a storage requirement of that size by 2031-32.
