Pumped Storage: India Has 7.43 GW Running, 345.38 GW Mapped

Why in News

A government backgrounder of 2 November 2026 sets out India's pumped storage hydropower position: 7.43 GW operational across 10 projects, 345.38 GW of identified potential at 320 sites, and a pathway to 105.56 GW of cumulative capacity by 2035-36.

Pumped storage hydropower, often called a water battery, stores electricity by lifting water to a higher reservoir and releasing it through turbines when power is needed. A government backgrounder issued on 2 November 2026 explains why this old technology has become central to India's clean energy plans. As of September 2026 the country had 308.027 GW of installed non-fossil generation capacity, having added about 55.29 GW of it during FY 2025-26, and the target is 500 GW of non-fossil capacity by 2030.

Why storage matters

Solar and wind output rises and falls with sunlight, weather and the hour of the day, so electricity has to be stored when generation runs ahead of demand and drawn down when it falls behind. The Central Electricity Authority expects storage needs of 73.93 GW by 2031-32, made up of 26.69 GW from pumped storage projects and 47.24 GW from battery energy storage systems. Batteries answer quickly and suit frequency regulation and short peaks; pumped storage shifts much larger volumes of electricity over longer stretches of time and lasts for decades, though it needs the right terrain.

The three types

  • On-stream: both reservoirs sit on a river, stream or nallah
  • Off-stream open-loop: one reservoir is on a watercourse and the other is not
  • Off-stream closed-loop: neither reservoir sits on a river or a perennial stream, which is why these are preferred for faster clearance and less harm to aquatic life

Where India stands

Operational capacity stood at 7.43 GW across 10 projects as of August 2026, each above 25 MW in size. A further 15.87 GW across 11 projects is under construction or implementation, and 10.40 GW across 8 projects has been concurred or appraised by the authority. In all, 320 pumped storage sites have been identified with a combined potential of 345.38 GW, of which 62 on-stream schemes account for 56.67 GW and 258 off-stream schemes for 288.71 GW.

Region-wise potential

RegionPotential
Western129.72 GW, with Maharashtra at 67.36 GW and Gujarat at 33.36 GW
Southern97.76 GW, led by Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Tamil Nadu
Eastern53.41 GW, including 41.53 GW in Odisha
Northern50.32 GW, led by Uttar Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh
North Eastern14.18 GW

The Western Region leads because rivers rising in the Western Ghats fall steeply, which suits reservoirs at two heights. Looking ahead, the authority has mapped commissioning of 100.81 GW by 2035-36, which would take cumulative pumped storage capacity to 105.56 GW.

How the government is helping

Guidelines to promote these projects were notified in April 2023, and tariff-based competitive bidding guidelines followed in February 2025. Budget support covers roads, bridges, railway sidings, ropeways and transmission lines. Projects awarded for construction by 30 June 2028 get a full waiver of inter-state transmission charges for 25 years from commercial operation. The concurrence timeline for a detailed project report has been cut from 90 days to 50 days, environmental appraisal has been eased for eligible schemes, and the capital expenditure limit needing the authority's concurrence was revised to 3,000 crore rupees, with closed-loop off-stream schemes exempted altogether.

The world picture

Pumped storage is the most widely used form of large-scale storage anywhere. Global capacity stood at 159.8 GW at the end of 2025, with China at close to 66 GW, Japan around 22 GW and the United States about 19 GW. India ranked fourth with 7.18 GW at that point, a figure that has since risen to 7.43 GW.

Practice Questions

Q3.EnvironmentHard

Which of the following correctly describes an off-stream closed-loop pumped storage scheme?

  1. A.Both reservoirs lie on a river, stream or nallah
  2. B.One reservoir lies on a watercourse and the other does not
  3. C.Neither reservoir lies on a river or perennial stream
  4. D.Both reservoirs are built inside an existing irrigation canal
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Neither reservoir lies on a river or perennial stream

Pumped storage schemes are grouped by how their reservoirs relate to natural watercourses, and the closed-loop variety keeps both reservoirs away from them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is pumped storage hydropower?

A way of storing electricity, often called a water battery. Surplus power pumps water to an upper reservoir, and the water is released through turbines to generate electricity when demand rises.

How much pumped storage capacity does India have?

India had 7.43 GW operational across 10 projects as of August 2026. Another 15.87 GW is under construction and 10.40 GW has been concurred or appraised.

Which region has the largest identified potential?

The Western Region, with 129.72 GW out of the national total of 345.38 GW. Maharashtra accounts for 67.36 GW and Gujarat for 33.36 GW, helped by the steep gradients of rivers rising in the Western Ghats.

What are the three types of pumped storage schemes?

On-stream, where both reservoirs lie on a watercourse; off-stream open-loop, where only one does; and off-stream closed-loop, where neither reservoir sits on a river or perennial stream.
