Coir Exports Up 305% in Ten Years to ₹6,614.40 Crore

Why in News

On 14 October 2026 the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises set out the state of India’s coir sector, reporting exports of ₹6,614.40 crore in FY 2025-26, a rise of 305.70% in twelve years, and more than 21,000 units employing over 7 lakh people.

India is the world's largest producer and exporter of coir, and the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises has set out where the industry stands today. Coir is the natural fibre pulled from the hard outer husk of the coconut, and one of the country's oldest traditional trades turns that fibre into ropes, mats, mattresses, brushes and other household goods. Because the raw material is a by-product of the coconut, the trade is counted as eco-friendly manufacturing, and the ministry ties its growth to the goal of Viksit Bharat @2047.

How big the sector is

Roughly two-thirds of everything the world makes in coir comes from India. The industry's turnover is put at about ₹16,000 crore, close to 1% of national GDP. In FY 2025-26 shipments of coir and coir goods were worth ₹6,614.40 crore. The biggest buyers were the United States, China, the Netherlands, Spain and the United Kingdom. Coir pith, fibre, yarn and tufted mats make up the bulk of what goes out. More than 21,000 units are at work, giving direct and indirect jobs to over 7 lakh people, of whom 80% are women from village homes.

Coir Vikas Yojana

A central sector scheme of the MSME ministry, the Coir Vikas Yojana (CVY), carries the sector forward. It pays for new machines, technologies and products, trains workers in the skills the trade needs, pushes sales at home and overseas, funds publicity and stalls at fairs, carries exporters to exhibitions abroad and keeps the sector's statistics.
