Why in News

On 25 October 2026 KVIC chairman Manoj Goel put the khadi and village industries sector's 2025-26 turnover above Rs 1.87 lakh crore and its employment above 2.04 crore people, after the Prime Minister cited single-day khadi sales of more than Rs 28 crore on Gandhi Jayanti in the 139th episode of Mann Ki Baat.

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC), a body under the Union Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, placed fresh figures for the khadi and village industries sector before the public on 25 October 2026. KVIC Chairman Manoj Goel gave the numbers while thanking the Prime Minister for speaking about khadi in the 139th episode of Mann Ki Baat.

What the sector earns and employs

Goel said the sector's turnover went past Rs 1.87 lakh crore in the 2025-26 financial year, and that work was given to more than 2.04 crore people in the same period. He said the next milestone before the sector is a turnover of Rs 2.51 lakh crore, which he expects it to touch in the near future. The chairman described the sector as a source of jobs, of women's empowerment and of a stronger village economy, and said khadi now carries both the country's cultural inheritance and the confidence of a self-reliant India.

Sales on Gandhi Jayanti

In the 139th episode the Prime Minister said goods of khadi and village industries sold for more than Rs 28 crore on a single day, Gandhi Jayanti, and asked buyers to pick the work of local artisans through the festive weeks. Earlier appeals of the same kind left their own marks at Khadi Bhawan in Connaught Place, New Delhi, where takings reached Rs 1.34 crore on 2 October in 2022 and crossed Rs 1.52 crore on 2 October 2023.

Twelve years of the khadi appeal

The call to buy khadi was first made from this platform on 3 October 2014, in the programme's opening episode. A record quantity of goods was sold at KVIC's flagship outlet the very next day, on 4 October 2014. The appeal was repeated in the 81st episode on 26 September 2021, then on 25 September 2022 and 24 September 2023, and again in the 126th episode of 28 September 2025, which asked citizens to buy at least one khadi item on 2 October. The 139th episode, aired on 25 October 2026, was also the one in which Mann Ki Baat completed 12 years.

What KVIC promised

Goel pledged on behalf of artisans, weavers, craftsmen and rural entrepreneurs that KVIC would take the ideas of Vocal for Local and Atmanirbhar Bharat further through better quality, new design and the entry of younger workers into the trade.
