Why in News

On 13 October 2026 the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship announced that the registration window for IndiaSkills 2026-27 has been reopened till 19 October 2026, following strong demand after Team India's tenth place finish at WorldSkills Shanghai.

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has reopened the registration window for the IndiaSkills Competition 2026-27 and will accept applications till 19 October 2026. The ministry took the decision after a stream of requests from institutions and from young people who wanted to take part, and the interest followed Team India's performance at the WorldSkills Competition in Shanghai.

The result that set off the demand

At WorldSkills Shanghai the Indian contingent finished tenth in the world, with six silver medals and 20 Medallions for Excellence. It was an improvement on the thirteenth place India took at WorldSkills Lyon in 2024. The country sent its largest ever team to the event, 70 competitors who took part across 63 skills. Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the Shanghai competitors at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg in New Delhi on 9 October 2026, and the attention that followed pushed institutions to ask for the registration window to be opened again.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalEasy

Till which date has the registration window for IndiaSkills 2026-27 been reopened?

  1. A.9 October 2026
  2. B.15 October 2026
  3. C.19 October 2026
  4. D.31 October 2026
Show answer
Correct answer: C. 19 October 2026

Explanation

The correct answer is 19 October 2026. The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship reopened the registration window for the IndiaSkills Competition 2026-27 up to this date, after many requests from institutions and from young people who had not been able to apply earlier. Eligible candidates must complete their applications on the Skill India Digital Hub by that date. Option A is the day on which the Prime Minister hosted the WorldSkills Shanghai competitors at his residence, which is the event that set off the renewed interest, so it is an easy number to confuse. Options B and D are not dates announced by the ministry. The reopening is meant to widen participation, and the ministry has asked state governments, union territory administrations, Industrial Training Institutes, polytechnics, colleges, skill training institutions and industry partners to spread the information.

Q2.NationalMedium

What position did Team India secure at the WorldSkills Competition held in Shanghai?

  1. A.Fifth
  2. B.Tenth
  3. C.Thirteenth
  4. D.Twentieth
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Tenth

Explanation

The correct answer is tenth. The Indian contingent secured the tenth position globally at WorldSkills Shanghai, winning six silver medals and 20 Medallions for Excellence. Option C is the trap here, because thirteenth was India's finish at the previous edition, WorldSkills Lyon in 2024, and the Shanghai result is described as an improvement on it. Options A and D are not part of the record. Two further details are worth memorising: India sent its largest ever contingent to Shanghai, with 70 competitors taking part across 63 skills, and the performance drew national attention to what skills, specialised training and sustained preparation can do for young people. It was this momentum, strengthened by the Prime Minister's interaction with the team, that led institutions and aspirants to press for the reopening of IndiaSkills registrations.

Q3.NationalMedium

Which body is the implementation partner for the IndiaSkills Competition 2026-27?

  1. A.National Skill Development Corporation
  2. B.National Council for Vocational Education and Training
  3. C.Directorate General of Training
  4. D.All India Council for Technical Education
Show answer
Correct answer: A. National Skill Development Corporation

Explanation

The correct answer is the National Skill Development Corporation, abbreviated as NSDC. IndiaSkills 2026-27 is organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship with NSDC as the implementation partner, and the competition covers 63 industry relevant skill categories spanning manufacturing, engineering, construction, digital technologies, the creative industries and services. Options B, C and D name real institutions working in vocational education and training, which is what makes them plausible, but none of them is named as the implementation partner here. Candidates should also remember the structure of the competition, which provides a pathway through district or zonal, state, regional and national levels, so that talented young people can show their skills, receive expert guidance and work towards representing India at international skill competitions.

Q4.NationalHard

How many medals of each kind did Team India win at WorldSkills Shanghai?

  1. A.Six gold and 20 Medallions for Excellence
  2. B.Six silver and 20 Medallions for Excellence
  3. C.Six bronze and ten Medallions for Excellence
  4. D.Three silver and 20 Medallions for Excellence
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Six silver and 20 Medallions for Excellence

Explanation

The correct answer is six silver medals and 20 Medallions for Excellence. That was the haul with which India finished tenth globally at WorldSkills Shanghai, an improvement on the thirteenth position at WorldSkills Lyon in 2024. Option A changes the metal to gold, option C changes it to bronze and reduces the medallion count, and option D halves the number of silver medals, so each of them alters one part of a figure that must be remembered exactly. The Medallion for Excellence is awarded to competitors who reach a high standard without finishing on the podium, which is why the count of 20 is considerably larger than the medal count. India's contingent of 70 competitors across 63 skills was its largest ever at the event, and the Prime Minister hosted the team at his residence on 9 October 2026.
