GSLV-F18 Launches NVS-03 to Strengthen NavIC System
ISRO successfully launched GSLV-F18 carrying the NVS-03 navigation satellite, a mission that strengthens NavIC, India's own satellite navigation system.

Why in News
On 31 October 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated ISRO on the successful launch of GSLV-F18 carrying NVS-03, a satellite that strengthens NavIC, India's indigenous satellite navigation system.
India has added a fresh satellite to the constellation that powers its own navigation service. On 31 October 2026 the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, congratulated the scientists and engineers of ISRO on the successful flight of GSLV-F18, the mission that carried the navigation satellite NVS-03.
The vehicle and the payload
The rocket used on this mission was the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle, flying with the designation GSLV-F18. The satellite it carried, NVS-03, is a navigation spacecraft built for NavIC. The spacecraft is described as carrying improved capabilities, which means it is not a like-for-like stand-in for an older satellite but an upgrade to what the constellation is able to do.
What NavIC is
NavIC is the satellite navigation system that India has developed for itself. The point of building one at home is independence: positioning, navigation and timing signals reach users from satellites the country owns and controls, instead of from a system run by another government. Each addition to the constellation therefore has a value beyond the single launch, because the quality of the service a user finally gets on the ground depends on how many healthy satellites are in orbit and on what each of them can do.
Why the mission was welcomed
- It was presented as an important step in making NavIC stronger.
- It advances India's pursuit of self-reliance in critical technologies, navigation being one of them.
- It is expected to support better navigation services for ordinary citizens, who use such signals in transport, farming, fishing, mapping and emergency response.
The Prime Minister praised the dedication and the ingenuity of the country's space scientists and said their run of achievements continues to be a matter of national pride.
The exam angle
For a question paper the useful habit is to store the three names together as one set: the vehicle GSLV-F18, the satellite NVS-03 and the system NavIC, with ISRO as the agency and 31 October 2026 as the date in the news. Papers like to swap one element of such a set, offering a different rocket or a different constellation, so a candidate who remembers only the satellite number can still be caught out.
Important Facts
| Mission | GSLV-F18 carrying NVS-03 |

Exam Point of View
Store the set together: launch vehicle GSLV-F18, payload NVS-03, system NavIC, agency ISRO, date in the news 31 October 2026. Expect questions on which vehicle carried NVS-03, which constellation the satellite joins, what NavIC is, and why the mission is tied to self-reliance in critical technologies.

Which launch vehicle carried the NVS-03 satellite?
GSLV-F18. The Prime Minister congratulated ISRO's scientists and engineers on its successful launch with NVS-03 on board.
What is NavIC?
NavIC is India's indigenous satellite navigation system. NVS-03, with enhanced capabilities, strengthens it and supports navigation services for citizens.
Why is the NVS-03 launch linked to self-reliance?
Navigation is treated as a critical technology, so a home-built system served by home-built satellites reduces dependence on navigation signals controlled from outside India.
