Why in News

The Prime Minister's Office announced on 10 October 2026 that the Prime Minister will visit Chennai on 11 October to inaugurate, dedicate and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth more than ₹13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu.

The Prime Minister's Office said on 10 October 2026 that Narendra Modi will be in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, the next day to hand over development work valued at more than ₹13,000 crore. The list reaches across metro rail, national highways, railways, ports, petroleum and education.

Metro and highways

The Poonamallee-Vadapalani length of the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project will be opened. It was built at a cost of about ₹4,900 crore and carries a double-decker structure 3.7 km long, with signalling designed for driverless running. Road work worth roughly ₹3,700 crore follows: the four-laned Vadugapatti-Therkuvenganallur stretch of NH-744, which runs 36 km; the 30-km Madurai Ring Road stretch of NH-744A; and the foundation stone of a four-lane bypass at Thiruvarur on the Nagapattinam-Thanjavur section of NH-83.

Railways

Rail assets above ₹750 crore are to be dedicated, among them the Karaikal-Peralam line and three rail flyovers in and around Coimbatore. Five Amrit Stations rebuilt under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme will open at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal.

Ports and petroleum

Chennai Port receives four works: a paved storage yard, four EXIM godowns, an upgraded cruise terminal and a seafarers club. Eight projects are listed at V.O. Chidambaranar Port, while at Kamarajar Port the Coal Berth-3 project opens and dredging begins for Container Terminal Phase-I, Stage-II. At the Manali refinery of Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited (CPCL) the foundation stone goes down for a Group II/III Lube Oil Base Stocks plant costing nearly ₹1,620 crore, with a capacity of 270 thousand metric tonnes a year, meant to supply base stocks for premium lubricants made in India.

Brain centre at IIT Madras

The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras is to be dedicated to the nation, together with a global scientific mission that will map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering life from the foetal stage to old age. C-STROKE, called the first human ischaemic stroke atlas of its kind, will be released with over 1,000 annotated microscopic sections taken from a stroke-affected brain, a resource meant to help researchers find new therapeutic targets. The same day carries the golden jubilee of Jaigopal Garodia Hindu Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School and a visit to the Jalakandeswarar temple in Chennai.

Exam Point of View

Remember the total outlay (over ₹13,000 crore), the metro stretch (Poonamallee-Vadapalani of Chennai Metro Phase II, about ₹4,900 crore, 3.7-km double-decker), the highway outlay of ₹3,700 crore, the five Amrit Stations, the three ports involved (Chennai, Kamarajar, V.O. Chidambaranar), the CPCL Manali LOBS project at ₹1,620 crore and 270 TMTPA, and the Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre at IIT Madras with the C-STROKE atlas.

Practice Questions

Q1.NationalEasy

What is the approximate total value of the development projects being inaugurated, dedicated and started at Chennai on 11 October 2026?

  1. A.Over ₹3,700 crore
  2. B.Over ₹8,500 crore
  3. C.Over ₹13,000 crore
  4. D.Over ₹21,000 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Over ₹13,000 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is over ₹13,000 crore. The announcement states that the projects taken up together at Chennai in Tamil Nadu carry a combined value of more than ₹13,000 crore, and that they cover metro rail, national highways, railways, ports, petroleum and education. Option A names ₹3,700 crore, which is only the figure for the national highway projects in the State and not the whole package, so it understates the outlay badly. Option B gives ₹8,500 crore, a figure that does not belong to any part of this announcement at all. Option D raises the sum to ₹21,000 crore, which is well above what the package is worth. Within the total, the metro stretch alone accounts for about ₹4,900 crore, the highway works about ₹3,700 crore, the rail works more than ₹750 crore and the lube oil base stocks plant nearly ₹1,620 crore, which shows how the larger figure is made up.

Q2.NationalMedium

The Poonamallee-Vadapalani corridor being opened in Chennai belongs to which project, and what is its special structural feature?

  1. A.Phase I of Chennai Metro, with an underground twin tunnel
  2. B.Phase II of Chennai Metro, with a double-decker structure of 3.7 km
  3. C.Chennai Suburban Rail, with an elevated cable-stayed span
  4. D.Phase III of Chennai Metro, with a floating station
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Phase II of Chennai Metro, with a double-decker structure of 3.7 km

Explanation

The correct answer is Phase II of Chennai Metro, with a double-decker structure of 3.7 km. The stretch from Poonamallee to Vadapalani is part of the second phase of the Chennai Metro Rail Project, it was built at a cost of about ₹4,900 crore, and its distinguishing feature is a double-decker structure running 3.7 km, along with advanced signalling meant to support driverless operations. The corridor is expected to cut daily travel time and improve the link between the fast-growing western suburbs of the city and the centre. Option A wrongly places the stretch in the first phase and invents an underground tunnel. Option C assigns it to a suburban rail system, which is not what the announcement describes. Option D moves it to a third phase and adds a floating station, a feature nowhere mentioned. Only option B matches both the phase and the structure.

Q3.NationalEasy

Under which scheme have the five railway stations at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal been redeveloped?

  1. A.Amrit Bharat Station Scheme
  2. B.Adarsh Station Scheme
  3. C.Setu Bharatam
  4. D.Bharatmala Pariyojana
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Explanation

The correct answer is the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The five stations named for inauguration in Tamil Nadu, at Palani, Vellore Cantonment, Ambasamudram, Paramakkudi and Namakkal, have been rebuilt under that scheme and are being opened as Amrit Stations, as part of railway works worth more than ₹750 crore that also include the Karaikal-Peralam line and three rail flyovers in and around Coimbatore. Option B, the Adarsh Station Scheme, is a different railway programme and is not the one named here. Option C, Setu Bharatam, deals with road bridges and level crossings on national highways rather than station buildings. Option D, Bharatmala Pariyojana, is a highway development programme and has nothing to do with station redevelopment. Candidates should link the words Amrit Station to this scheme and remember the five station names.

Q4.NationalMedium

The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre being dedicated to the nation is located at which institution, and what atlas is being released there?

  1. A.IIT Madras; C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas
  2. B.AIIMS New Delhi; a cardiac imaging atlas
  3. C.IISc Bengaluru; a genome atlas
  4. D.NIMHANS Bengaluru; a spinal injury atlas
Show answer
Correct answer: A. IIT Madras; C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas

Explanation

The correct answer is IIT Madras; C-STROKE, a human ischaemic stroke atlas. The Sudha Gopalakrishnan Brain Centre stands at IIT Madras and is being dedicated to the nation during the Chennai visit. Along with it begins a global scientific mission to map more than 100 human brains into three-dimensional atlases at cellular resolution, covering the whole span of life from the foetal stage to old age. C-STROKE is described as the first atlas of its kind for human ischaemic stroke and carries over 1,000 annotated microscopic sections from a stroke-affected brain, which researchers across the world can use to identify new therapeutic targets. Options B, C and D name other well-known institutions and other kinds of atlases, none of which figures in this announcement. The pairing to remember is the brain centre with IIT Madras and the stroke atlas named C-STROKE.
