Why in News

The BRICS Theatre Festival 2026 was inaugurated on 12 October 2026 at the National School of Drama in New Delhi under India's BRICS Presidency, with the theme 'Shared Stories, Shared Futures' and nine participating countries.

The BRICS Theatre Festival 2026 began on 12 October 2026 at the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi. Its theme is 'Shared Stories, Shared Futures', and the three-day festival runs from 12 to 14 October 2026. The Ministry of Culture is the organiser, and the festival is held under India's BRICS Presidency 2026, coming soon after the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. Theatre practitioners, scholars, students and cultural representatives from nine BRICS member and partner countries are taking part.

Who is taking part

The nine participants are India, Thailand, Indonesia, Russia, Iran, Vietnam, South Africa, Kazakhstan and Ethiopia. Russia has sent two theatre groups and India is staging two productions of its own, while the other countries bring work in their own languages and performance idioms. National theatre schools and leading theatre institutions make up the line-up, and the programme ranges across classical, contemporary and experimental forms.

The opening

Union Minister of Culture and Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat was the Chief Guest. He said that while diplomacy lets nations negotiate and economic cooperation helps them prosper, it is culture that lets societies understand one another and build ties across political boundaries. Also present were Vivek Aggarwal, Secretary in the Ministry of Culture; Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs and India's BRICS Sherpa for 2026; and Chittaranjan Tripathy, Director of the NSD, along with ambassadors and heads of mission of the participating countries. The opening day's play was Samudra Manthan, written by Asif Ali, with design, direction and music by Chittaranjan Tripathy, staged at the Abhimanch Auditorium on the NSD campus.

Venues and tickets

Performances are spread across New Delhi: the NSD's Abhimanch and Sammukh auditoriums, Kamani Auditorium, LTG Auditorium and Meghdoot Theatre. Tickets are sold through BookMyShow at 200 rupees each. Workshops and discussion sessions are held on the mornings after performances, bringing together directors, cast and crew to talk about artistic vision, performance traditions, acting method and stagecraft.

The presidency behind it

India holds the BRICS Presidency for 2026 under the theme 'Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability', with a people-centric approach. The Culture Track of the presidency gives priority to cultural and creative industries, protection of heritage, and the place of culture in climate resilience and sustainable development. NSD, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, is the nodal agency for the festival.

Practice Questions

Q1.Summits & ConferencesEasy

What is the theme of the BRICS Theatre Festival 2026 held in New Delhi?

  1. A.Shared Stories, Shared Futures
  2. B.One Earth, One Stage
  3. C.Theatre for a New World
  4. D.Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Shared Stories, Shared Futures

Explanation

The correct answer is Shared Stories, Shared Futures, the theme under which the three-day festival opened at the National School of Drama in New Delhi and runs from 12 to 14 October 2026. Option D is the trap worth understanding: those words are the theme of India's BRICS Presidency for 2026, not of the theatre festival, and the festival sits under that presidency as one of its cultural engagements. Options B and C are invented slogans of the kind that sound plausible for a cultural event but appear nowhere in the announcement. The festival brings together theatre practitioners, scholars, students and cultural representatives from nine BRICS member and partner countries, and the Ministry of Culture is the organiser with the National School of Drama as the nodal agency. The festival follows the BRICS Summit held in New Delhi.

Q2.Summits & ConferencesMedium

Which institution is the nodal agency for the BRICS Theatre Festival 2026?

  1. A.Sangeet Natak Akademi
  2. B.Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts
  3. C.National School of Drama
  4. D.Indian Council for Cultural Relations
Show answer
Correct answer: C. National School of Drama

Explanation

The correct answer is the National School of Drama, an autonomous institution under the Ministry of Culture, which both hosts the opening and serves as the nodal agency for organising the festival. Its Abhimanch and Sammukh auditoriums are among the venues, along with Kamani Auditorium, LTG Auditorium and Meghdoot Theatre, and its Director, Chittaranjan Tripathy, designed and directed the opening play Samudra Manthan. Options A, B and D name other well-known cultural bodies that work in the performing arts, heritage and cultural diplomacy, and any of them might plausibly run such an event, but the festival was entrusted to the drama school. Candidates should also note the ticketing detail, since such specifics are often asked: seats were sold through BookMyShow at 200 rupees each, and workshops with directors, cast and crew follow the performances each morning.

Q3.Summits & ConferencesHard

Who is India's BRICS Sherpa for 2026, present at the festival's opening ceremony?

  1. A.Vivek Aggarwal
  2. B.Sudhakar Dalela
  3. C.Chittaranjan Tripathy
  4. D.Gajendra Singh Shekhawat
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Sudhakar Dalela

Explanation

The correct answer is Sudhakar Dalela, Secretary (Economic Relations) in the Ministry of External Affairs, who serves as India's BRICS Sherpa for 2026 and attended the inaugural ceremony. Option A, Vivek Aggarwal, is the Secretary in the Ministry of Culture and was also present, which makes him an easy confusion. Option C, Chittaranjan Tripathy, is the Director of the National School of Drama and the director of the opening play rather than a diplomatic appointee. Option D, Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, is the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism and was the Chief Guest at the ceremony; he spoke about culture allowing societies to understand one another even where histories, languages and traditions differ. Ambassadors and heads of mission of the participating countries also attended the opening at the National School of Drama.
