APARC General Assembly 2026 Opens at IITM in Pune

Why in News

On 12 October 2026 the General Assembly 2026 of Atmospheric Processes and their Role in Climate, a core project of the World Climate Research Programme, was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Pune, with India hosting the quadrennial meeting.

The General Assembly 2026 of Atmospheric Processes and their Role in Climate (APARC) was inaugurated at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune. India is hosting this gathering for the first time, which the Ministry of Earth Sciences described as a historic moment, since the assembly is held only once every four years.

Who inaugurated it

The chief guest was Dr Srinivasa Kumar Tummala, Secretary in the Ministry of Earth Sciences, who joined online. The guest of honour was Ko Barrett, Deputy Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, also online. Among those present were Dr Hindumathi Palanisamy of the World Climate Research Programme at the WMO, APARC Co-chair Dr Stephanie Evan of the CNRS laboratory on the atmosphere and cyclones in Reunion Island, France, Dr Hella Garny of the DLR Institute of Atmospheric Physics in Germany, IITM Director Dr Suryachandra Rao, and Dr Suvarna Fadnavis, who chairs the Scientific Organizing Committee and heads the Centre for Climate Change Research at IITM.

Size of the assembly

  • The assembly runs for five days, from 12 to 16 October 2026
  • More than 550 participants are taking part from Europe, the Americas, South Asia, South East Asia and Australia
  • Of these, 380 are attending in person, made up of 250 Indian and 130 foreign delegates, while about 180 researchers have joined online
  • The scientific programme has 67 oral presentations, including nine keynote talks, and more than 400 poster presentations
  • Over 120 students and 150 early career researchers are attending

What is being discussed

Dr Suryachandra Rao delivered the opening keynote on modelling the monsoon and on ways to close the gap between how far the monsoon can be predicted in principle and how well it is actually forecast. The assembly is organised around six core themes: a high-resolution picture of the climate system; atmospheric composition and how it varies as the climate changes; the dynamical and thermodynamic fingerprints of climate forcing; circulation, composition and extreme events in the tropics; climate prediction from the subseasonal to the decadal scale; and APARC science with and for society. Artificial intelligence and machine learning in climate modelling, atmospheric chemistry and the forecasting of extreme events are the emerging frontiers getting special attention.

About APARC and WCRP

APARC is a core project of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) and studies the atmospheric drivers and processes behind weather patterns and the working of the global climate. Its General Assembly serves as a worldwide platform to find gaps in research, build scientific partnerships and draw up workable roadmaps on pressing climate problems. For aspirants the points to hold are the host institute, the city, the parent programme, the four-year cycle and the fact that India is leading the hosting for the first time.

Practice Questions

Q1.Summits & ConferencesEasy

At which institute was the APARC General Assembly 2026 inaugurated?

  1. A.Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune
  2. B.India Meteorological Department, New Delhi
  3. C.National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting, Noida
  4. D.Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services, Hyderabad
Show answer
Correct answer: A. Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune

Explanation

The correct answer is the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune. The inaugural function of the assembly was held there, and the institute's Director delivered the opening keynote on modelling the monsoon and on narrowing the gap between how far the monsoon can be predicted in principle and the skill of actual forecasts. The chair of the Scientific Organizing Committee also heads the institute's Centre for Climate Change Research. Options B, C and D are all institutions under the Ministry of Earth Sciences and are easy to confuse with the host, but none of them hosted this assembly: the first issues the country's weather forecasts, the second works on medium range modelling and the third on ocean information services. The Secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences was the chief guest and joined the function online.

Q2.Summits & ConferencesMedium

APARC, whose General Assembly 2026 is being hosted by India, is a core project of which programme?

  1. A.World Climate Research Programme
  2. B.Global Atmosphere Watch Programme
  3. C.International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme
  4. D.Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission
Show answer
Correct answer: A. World Climate Research Programme

Explanation

The correct answer is the World Climate Research Programme, usually shortened to WCRP. Atmospheric Processes and their Role in Climate is one of its core projects and works on the atmospheric drivers and processes that govern weather patterns and the dynamics of the global climate. A scientific officer of this programme at the World Meteorological Organization was among the dignitaries at the inaugural function, and the organisation's Deputy Secretary-General was the guest of honour. Options B, C and D are genuine international scientific efforts in the earth sciences, which makes them plausible distractors, but the assembly in Pune belongs to the climate research programme named in option A. The assembly meets once in four years and serves as a global platform to identify research gaps and build partnerships.

Q3.Summits & ConferencesMedium

How often is the APARC General Assembly held?

  1. A.Every year
  2. B.Once in two years
  3. C.Once in four years
  4. D.Once in five years
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Once in four years

Explanation

The correct answer is once in four years, which is why the meeting is described as quadrennial and why India's turn as host was called a historic moment by the Ministry of Earth Sciences. The assembly in Pune runs for five days, from 12 to 16 October 2026, and brings together more than 550 participants from Europe, the Americas, South Asia, South East Asia and Australia, of whom 380 are attending in person and about 180 online. Options A and B suggest a much shorter cycle, which would make such a large global gathering impractical, and option D stretches the gap by a year. Note the difference between the four-year cycle of the assembly and the five-day length of this edition, as the two numbers are easily swapped in an examination question.
