Coal Stocks at Power Plants Stay Above 18 MT in October 2026
Coal stocks at domestic coal-based power plants have held above 18 MT since 29 September 2026 and stood at 18.205 MT on 10 October as rake loading rose.

Why in News
On 12 October 2026 the Ministry of Coal reported that coal stocks at domestic coal-based power plants have remained above 18 MT since 29 September 2026, with depletion slowing sharply in October 2026 as rake loading and daily supply to the power sector both rose.
The Ministry of Coal reported on 12 October 2026 that the fuel held at the country's domestic coal-based thermal power stations has not slipped below 18 million tonnes (MT) at any point since 29 September 2026. Despatches from the mines have kept pace with what generating units burn each day, and the ministry called the position steady rather than tightening. Stations sitting on critical stock are watched separately, and coal is shifted to the weaker plants on the basis of their requirement so that generation is not interrupted.
Where the stock stands
The figure at these plants was 18.932 MT on 29 September 2026. Nearly a fortnight later, on 10 October 2026, it was still comfortably in the same band at 18.205 MT. Stock did not only fall during the month: it was added to on two separate days, by 0.024 MT on 2 October 2026 and by 0.017 MT on 10 October 2026.
Depletion has thinned out
The contrast with the previous month is the headline. Through September 2026 the stock at power plants came down by about 7.28 MT over the full month, an average draw of roughly 0.24 MT every day. Across the first ten days of October 2026 the total drawdown was only about 0.56 MT, which averages close to 0.06 MT a day. In other words, the daily rate of depletion in early October was a small fraction of the September rate.
Railway rakes carried the gain
Heavier loading of rakes is what turned the position around. Rakes placed for the power sector averaged 469 a day between 1 and 10 October 2026, against 426 a day through September 2026, a gain of about 10 per cent. Loading on individual days in October stayed inside a band of 447 to 482 rakes, so the improvement was spread through the period and not the result of one heavy day.
Supply running ahead of plan
The extra rakes show up directly in deliveries. Coal actually supplied to the power sector averaged 2.49 MT a day in October 2026, up from 2.21 MT a day in September 2026. The plan for the month had provided for 2.37 MT a day, so the sector received more than was programmed, and the plan figure was bettered on nine of the first ten days.
| Indicator | September 2026 | October 2026 (1-10) |
| Rakes a day to power sector | 426 | 469 |
| Coal supplied a day | 2.21 MT | 2.49 MT |
| Stock drawdown | 7.28 MT in the month | 0.56 MT in ten days |
The ministry said it keeps working with Coal India Limited (CIL), SCCL, the Ministry of Railways and the power utilities to sustain evacuation from the mines, and it placed on record its appreciation of Indian Railways for moving the coal.

Exam Point of View
Remember the stock floor of 18 MT, the readings of 18.932 MT on 29 September 2026 and 18.205 MT on 10 October 2026, September’s fall of 7.28 MT against only 0.56 MT in ten days of October, rake loading of 469 a day against 426, daily supply of 2.49 MT against a plan of 2.37 MT, and the bodies named — Ministry of Coal, CIL, SCCL, Ministry of Railways and Indian Railways.
Practice Questions
What was the coal stock at India’s domestic coal-based power plants on 10 October 2026?
- A.16.418 MT
- B.18.205 MT
- C.19.932 MT
- D.21.640 MT
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 18.205 MT. The Ministry of Coal placed the stock at domestic coal-based power plants at 18.205 MT on 10 October 2026, which is why the ministry could say that the level has not fallen below 18 MT at any time since 29 September 2026, when the reading was 18.932 MT. Option A is wrong because a figure of 16.418 MT would sit well under the 18 MT mark that the ministry said has been held without a break, and no such dip was reported during the period. Option C is wrong because 19.932 MT is not the figure for 10 October; the 29 September reading was 18.932 MT, and stock drifted down from there rather than up. Option D is wrong because a level of 21.640 MT would mean a large build-up, whereas the first ten days of October saw a modest net fall of about 0.56 MT.
How many rakes a day, on average, were loaded for the power sector between 1 and 10 October 2026?
- A.426 rakes
- B.447 rakes
- C.469 rakes
- D.482 rakes
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 469 rakes. Loading for the power sector averaged 469 rakes a day over the first ten days of October 2026, and it is this heavier movement that lifted daily coal supply and slowed the drawdown of stock. Option A is wrong because 426 rakes a day was the average for September 2026, the month against which October’s improvement of about 10 per cent is being measured. Options B and D are wrong because 447 and 482 rakes are the lowest and highest daily loading figures recorded during October, that is, the two ends of the range within which the day-to-day numbers moved, and neither is the average for the period. A question of this kind turns on separating an average from the band around it, so the figures for the floor, the ceiling and the previous month all have to be kept apart.
What was the average daily coal supply to the power sector in October 2026, and how did it compare with the supply plan?
- A.2.21 MT a day, below the plan
- B.2.37 MT a day, equal to the plan
- C.2.49 MT a day, above the plan
- D.2.65 MT a day, above the plan
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 2.49 MT a day, above the plan. Coal actually delivered to the power sector averaged 2.49 MT a day in October 2026 while the plan for the month provided for 2.37 MT a day, so supply ran ahead of the programme and bettered it on nine of the first ten days. Option A is wrong because 2.21 MT a day was the September 2026 average, and the October figure is higher, not lower. Option B is wrong because 2.37 MT a day is the planned quantity itself, and actual supply exceeded it rather than merely matching it. Option D is wrong because 2.65 MT a day overstates the delivery; the reported average is 2.49 MT a day. The pairing of the actual figure with the plan figure is the part examiners test, since both numbers appear together in the ministry’s statement.
By roughly how much did coal stock at power plants decline through September 2026?
- A.0.56 MT
- B.3.14 MT
- C.7.28 MT
- D.12.90 MT
Show answer
Explanation
The correct answer is 7.28 MT. Stock at power plants fell by about 7.28 MT over the whole of September 2026, which works out to an average draw of roughly 0.24 MT a day and explains why the easing seen in October was treated as a notable change. Option A is wrong because 0.56 MT is the much smaller total fall recorded across the first ten days of October 2026, an average of about 0.06 MT a day. Option B is wrong because 3.14 MT does not correspond to any reported drawdown for either month. Option D is wrong because 12.90 MT would be a far steeper fall than the one reported, and a decline of that size would have pushed the stock below the 18 MT level that the ministry said has been maintained since 29 September 2026.
