Indian Oil to Give Rs 40 Crore Boost to Boxing in India

Why in News

On 13 October 2026 the National Sports Development Fund, the Sports Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation signed a memorandum of understanding under which Indian Oil will invest 40 crore rupees over two years to strengthen the boxing ecosystem in India.

The National Sports Development Fund, the Sports Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation have come together in a partnership to strengthen boxing in the country. Under the memorandum of understanding signed in New Delhi, the oil company will put in 40 crore rupees spread over two years, drawn from its corporate social responsibility funds. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya was present at the signing.

What the money will pay for

  • Talent identification and the development of athletes.
  • Coaching, sports science support and international exposure for boxers.
  • Strengthening of boxing academies across the country.
  • Capacity building of coaches, referees and technical officials.

The arrangement brings together three strengths: the oil company's CSR money, the fund's role in mobilising resources for sport, and the technical expertise of the Sports Authority of India. Boxers are to get quality coaching, scientific support, training facilities and chances to compete at the national and international level.

Why it was possible now

The signing follows the inclusion of sports as a dedicated thematic area in the Common CSR Theme Framework of the Department of Public Enterprises, which opens the door for public sector companies to put money into sport. The sports minister linked the step to the revamped Khelo India Scheme cleared by the Union Cabinet, under which the government is deepening its work with corporate partners. He said sport needs support in its early stage, after which an ecosystem begins to sustain itself and investment follows on its own, and he urged companies to come forward for every sport and not only boxing.

Indian boxing's recent record

The partnership comes at a good moment for the sport. At the Asian Games 2026 Indian boxers took six medals in all, made up of three gold and three bronze. The new programme is meant to build on that showing by strengthening the pathway for both emerging and elite boxers.

About the National Sports Development Fund

The fund was set up by the Government of India in 1998 under the Charitable Endowments Act of 1890. It raises resources from individuals and corporate bodies for the development of sport and supports athlete development, sports infrastructure, academies, specialised coaching, equipment and international exposure through tie ups with public and private organisations. Secretary (Sports) Hari Ranjan Rao, Boxing Federation of India President Ajay Singh and Indian Oil's Director of Human Resources Rashmi Govil were among those present when the document was signed.

How much will Indian Oil Corporation provide over two years to strengthen boxing in India?

  1. A.Rs 20 crore
  2. B.Rs 40 crore
  3. C.Rs 60 crore
  4. D.Rs 100 crore
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Rs 40 crore

Explanation

The correct answer is Rs 40 crore. Under the memorandum of understanding signed with the National Sports Development Fund and the Sports Authority of India, Indian Oil Corporation will provide this amount over a period of two years from its corporate social responsibility funds. The money is to be used for talent identification, athlete development, coaching, sports science, international exposure, the strengthening of boxing academies and the capacity building of coaches, referees and technical officials. Options A, C and D give amounts that were not announced in this partnership. The arrangement is notable because it combines three different strengths, namely the company's CSR support, the fund's role in mobilising resources for sports development, and the technical expertise of the Sports Authority of India, so that boxers get quality coaching, scientific support, training facilities and chances to compete at home and abroad.

Q2.SportsMedium

How many medals did Indian boxers win at the Asian Games 2026?

  1. A.Four, including two gold
  2. B.Six, including three gold
  3. C.Eight, including one gold
  4. D.Three, all bronze
Show answer
Correct answer: B. Six, including three gold

Explanation

The correct answer is six medals, including three gold. Indian boxers finished the Asian Games 2026 with six medals in total, three of them gold and the other three bronze, and this showing is the reason the new partnership is described as coming at an important time for the sport. The programme signed by the National Sports Development Fund, the Sports Authority of India and Indian Oil Corporation aims to build on that result by strengthening the development pathway for emerging as well as elite boxers. Option A understates both the total and the gold count, option C gives a wrong total with a wrong gold count, and option D leaves out the gold medals altogether, which is the most important part of the tally. Remember that no silver medal featured in the Indian boxing haul at these Games.

Q3.SportsHard

Under which Act was the National Sports Development Fund established?

  1. A.The Societies Registration Act, 1860
  2. B.The Charitable Endowments Act, 1890
  3. C.The Indian Trusts Act, 1882
  4. D.The Companies Act, 1956
Show answer
Correct answer: B. The Charitable Endowments Act, 1890

Explanation

The correct answer is the Charitable Endowments Act, 1890. The National Sports Development Fund was established by the Government of India in 1998 under this Act, and its purpose is to mobilise resources from individuals and corporate organisations for the development of sport in the country. The fund supports athlete development, sports infrastructure, academies, specialised coaching, equipment and international exposure through partnerships with both public and private sector organisations, which is exactly the role it plays in the boxing agreement with Indian Oil Corporation. Options A, C and D name other well known statutes that govern societies, trusts and companies, and they are plausible choices for a body of this kind, but none of them is the enabling law for this fund. The year of establishment, 1998, is equally worth remembering for the examination.

Q4.SportsMedium

Which scheme did the Union Sports Minister link to the new CSR backed boxing partnership?

  1. A.Fit India Movement
  2. B.Target Olympic Podium Scheme
  3. C.Revamped Khelo India Scheme
  4. D.National Sports Talent Search Scheme
Show answer
Correct answer: C. Revamped Khelo India Scheme

Explanation

The correct answer is the revamped Khelo India Scheme. Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports Dr Mansukh Mandaviya said that under this scheme, which the Union Cabinet approved, the government is deepening its collaboration with corporate partners, and that CSR backed partnerships of this kind will help build a truly national sports ecosystem. He also observed that sport needs support in its early and developing stage, after which the ecosystem begins to sustain itself and investment follows, and he urged companies to come forward for every sport rather than boxing alone. Options A, B and D name real government initiatives in sport, which makes them plausible, but the minister tied this agreement to the revamped Khelo India Scheme. The signing was itself made possible by the inclusion of sports as a dedicated theme in the Common CSR Theme Framework of the Department of Public Enterprises.
