Why in News

On 3 November 2026 Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said at Kirori Mal College, New Delhi, that India has set an export target of USD 1 trillion for the current year, after record exports of USD 863 billion last year.

Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal said on 3 November 2026 that India has set an export target of USD 1 trillion for the current year. He was delivering the keynote address at the Young Leaders Discourse Forum at Kirori Mal College, New Delhi, where he urged students to be ambitious and to see themselves as the architects of a developed India by 2047.

The export numbers

  • India's exports in the previous year were the highest ever recorded, at USD 863 billion.
  • The USD 1 trillion target for the current year works out to growth of about 16 per cent over that figure.
  • Exports in the first six months of the financial year, from April to September, stood at USD 480 billion, a rise of 14 per cent.
  • To hit the annual target, exports worth USD 520 billion are needed in the remaining six months. The Minister said October too had been a good month.

Why the target was pitched high

The Minister explained that a softer target was available. A goal of USD 900 billion would have meant growth of 5 per cent over the previous year, and even that would have been more than twice the pace of growth then projected for world trade. The International Monetary Fund had put global trade growth at 1.9 per cent in its projections of April and May this year. India chose the more ambitious figure instead, and Shri Goyal said he was confident the milestone would be reached. He added that the IMF has since revised its global trade growth projection to around 3.5 per cent, and suggested India's own export performance may have been one reason for the revision.

India's wider standing

Shri Goyal said India had travelled from being counted among the fragile five economies to being one of the world's leading and fastest-growing large economies. Citing a recent World Bank report, he said about 50 crore people in India have come out of extreme poverty. He credited the country's progress to its talent pool, the skills of its young people, its democratic system, an average age below 30 years, decisive leadership and the demand generated by 140 crore Indians. Countries across almost every region, he said, are keen to sign preferential trade agreements and free trade agreements with India. He also pointed to the flexibility of the National Education Policy, which lets students switch streams and earn credits, and to the roughly 1.1 billion internet users who give young Indians access to knowledge from across the world.
