PM Modi Opens Pune Metro Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar Line
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the PPP-built Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar line of the Pune Metro and laid the foundation stone for fresh metro work in Pune.

Why in News
On 3 November 2026 Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated the Hinjawadi-Shivajinagar line of the Pune Metro, built on the PPP model, and laid the foundation stone for further Pune Metro projects.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated a new line of the Pune Metro to the public and laid the foundation stone for further metro work in the city at a function held on 3 November 2026. The stretch now thrown open runs between Hinjawadi and Shivajinagar, bringing Pune's biggest information-technology cluster onto the city's rail network. Work also began the same day on another line meant to knit the older quarters of Pune together with its newer suburbs.
What marks this line out
- The line has been raised through the public-private partnership (PPP) route, which the Prime Minister singled out as a template other cities could borrow.
- The first phase of the Pune Metro had its foundation laid a decade earlier, so the city has moved from ground-breaking to a working network within ten years.
- Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, Union Minister Manohar Lal and Smt Sunetra Ajit Pawar were present at the ceremony.
India's metro record
The Prime Minister set the Pune project against the country's wider showing in urban rail. India's first metro service began running in 1984, and as late as 2014 only five cities had a metro at all. Route length has since risen to about 1,200 km, services run in 26 cities, and more than a crore passengers now ride a metro somewhere in India on an ordinary day. On that count the Indian network is reckoned among the three largest in the world.
| Then and now | 2014 | Now |
| Cities with a metro | 5 | 26 |
| Route in service | Far smaller | About 1,200 km |
Maharashtra and the urban push
Maharashtra had barely ten to eleven kilometres of metro line in service in 2014. The working network in the state is many times that today, and more than 680 km of further lines are being built. Investment in metro infrastructure in Maharashtra alone is put at over Rs 2.5 lakh crore, money that reaches workers, engineers, shops and factories as wages and orders.
Speaking on cities as engines of economic activity, the Prime Minister recalled the Urban Challenge Fund cleared in February 2026, for which the Centre is providing one lakh crore rupees so that hundreds of smaller towns can be turned into growth hubs. He also pointed to the latest World Bank assessment, under which about 50 crore Indians have climbed out of extreme poverty, and said he had completed 25 years as a head of government in the preceding month.
